People visit this site, and this subforum every day. Many of them may have no idea what to listen to, or how to break into less commercial genres of music,(I know we quite recently had a thread about how to get into 'hipster' music.) so here's an idea: Why don't we help these people (Or anyone else who wants to broaden their musical horizons) out by building up a bank of recommendations from the tropers. In a comment, name one album that you'd recommend to everybody who finds themselves reading this thread. I (or any mod that feels like taking up the cause) can edit the OP to include everybody's album, and then we can essentially have an archive of recs from all of the visitors to this forum.

So, starting with mine: despite the fact that it's been an incredibly hard choice, I would certainly recommend Vikingligr Veldi by Enslaved to everybody reading this.

Also, feel free to natter about how good/awful other people's choices are...

  • The Avalanches - Since I Left You (Physical Stamina)
  • Enslaved - Vikingligr Veldi (Cards Of War)
  • Kraftwerk - Trans-Europe Express (Quag 15)
  • Frank Zappa - Sheik Yerbouti (Aldo 930)

I don't know what is the difference between this and Music Recommendations. Nonetheless, I'll suggest, for example, Trans-Europe Express by Kraftwerk.

Most great music was made before albums became the main medium of musical expression.

Nevertheless, find yourself a copy of Sheik Yerbouti by Frank Zappa (or, alternately, Strictly Commercial, his best of album) and you'll realize why he was the most interesting thing in rock post Sgt. Pepper's.

[up][up]This is different to music recommendations in that music recommendations is based on people asking for a specific recommendation, and others using their expertise to provide a specific recommendation. This thread (if it is at all successful) will just build up an archive of albums considered 'essential' by somebody on the site, which would be able to be consulted by somebody unsure of what to listen to, or somebody merely wanting to broaden their musical horizons.

Since I Left You by The Avalanches, I guess.

To pity someone is to tell them "I feel bad about being better than you."

People have wildly varied taste in music—I don't think you can make a definitive list for everyone.

Insert witty 'n clever quip here.

[up] Not to mention, as I said, people who like music made before albums became the main form of musical expression. (i.e., before the British Invasion and the hippie era).

[up][up]As I said earlier, I simply want to try and make a list of albums recommended by people on the site. Obviously no recommendation can be absolutely universal, but I still think it's an alright idea to make a list of troper favourites for somebody who doesn't know what to listen to/somebody who wants to explore outside of their musical 'comfort zone.'.

If that's the case, I think a specific genre should be noted for each album. SO it can be denoted as a recommended album for some sort of music a troper's not familiar or wants to try out.

Eh, I still think that'd be redundant with the reccs thread. That thread is able to be used for that purpose.

As noted, this is probably redundant with the Recommendations thread, and will only serve to confuse people as to which they should use.
