I still find it hilarious that Armageddon is on the Criterion Collection. Aliens archaeologists will eventually find this collection, and come to that film and spend ages discussing its cinematic significance to humankind.

That is indeed perplexing. Deep Impact, I understand. But Armageddon?
Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that. The thing about the Criterion that people should keep in mind is that they were never about collecting exclusively Art House Films, but any film they considered relevant. Armageddon was a big deal at the time of it's release. It wasn't until the 90s that Studios really got behind pushing out their own Special Editions of movies instead of licensing the films to Criterion.
So that's why now they almost exclusive release Art House and lesser known movies.
It's thanks to them (and Watchmen) that I discovered Koyaanisqatsi. Film was so good, took me two weeks to begin to shut up about it. Also introduced me to post-minimalism in classic music, which is awesome.
The best thing, to me, about Criterion is that they consider those two great documentaries, Louie Bluie and Crumb, to be good enough for them, thus showing that they know good cinema when they see it.
"They say I'm old fashioned, and live in the past, but sometimes I think progress progresses too fast."I ended up watching Twelve Angry Men thanks to the Criterion Collection and it's become one of my all time favorite movies.

Godzilla is the movie I want to see from the collection. I've got the Sony release, and I'm curious what Criterion did in the Blu Ray.
Of course, don't you know anything about ALCHEMY?!- Twin clones of Ivan the GreatSpeaking of sony releases, you know that vanity plate, or bumper they have ? The blue screen with text saying 'sony'? You guys know what I'm talking abut right? What the hells up with that? That's lame
It's meant to be "artsy"
Of course, don't you know anything about ALCHEMY?!- Twin clones of Ivan the GreatProbably the first Criterion DVD I owned was My Dinner With Andre, which is a fantastic and fantastically unique movie you should all watch.
Insert witty 'n clever quip here.Figured I would resurrect this, as there is a 50% sale on Criterion releases at Barnes & Noble going on. Anyone get anything interesting?
So I thought we'd make a thread for all films classical and high-brow. They're the dark 99% proof chocolate of adulthood to the easy Milka bars of yore. The espresso coffe to the coke soda. Right now I'm watching Berlin Alexanderplatz, by Rainer Werner Fassbinder.
People in the Twenties be cray-cray, man!
