Ulrike

"Can't do the role!?" Ulrike blurted out at Maggie's declaration. Maggie wasby far the best actor to try for the role. Ulrike wouldn't have anyone else as her co-star. Perhaps its just a bit of stage fright, after all, Maggie wasn't the most out going person. Whatever the case, she had to contest this. "Why not?" she questioned, giving her a quizzical look.

Amity smiled and shrugged. "I'm sorry, but I have been playing hockey since I was nine years old," she said. "Not quite a 'rookie'." True, most of the shots had been delivered at closer ranges—in some cases slapshots at near-point blank, like a cavalryman wheeling in to fire his pistol—but even so she was surprised by how instinctively it all came to her. It's happening, she thought with a flush of excitement. Gosh, it's happening. Unconsciously she flexed her left hand around the haft of the hockey stick, feeling the ring around her finger.

"Anyway, what's the practice schedule like? I'm a little bit rusty, what with the move and all."

Near the storage facility (Seika)

Now on the limit of its strength, but still focused on snuffing the life out of its target, the goat Familiar tried to take down Seika with a powerful last strike. However, the way the hunter reacted made its offensive completely ineffective: Instead of falling back to avoid the damage, she leaped forward in order to hit it at near point-blank range. With her aim dead-on the creature, as the monster attack tried to hit something that wasn't there, it looked like this was the end for it.

But, while she was focusing on her original target, Seika didn't notice that the second one also jumped along with her, intercepting her on the air as it swatted her away from the goat, making her shot miss entirely, and tumbling her once again. Fortunately, the strike wasn't hard enough to inflict heavy damage yet... But, if the Familiars continued to fight this way, she wouldn't be able to defeat any of them. As long as it continued to be a two-on-one fight, Seika's probabilities of victory would be nigh zero.

Near a residential zone (Mariya and Julia)

As she expanded her senses and focused her attention, the sickening sensation that Mariya felt a moment ago dispelled completely, allowing her to “see” the ethereal signs and impulses generated by her enemies' activity and presence. It didn't take long for her to locate the Witch Labyrinth's threshold, etched on the side of an ordinary wall, located a few feet away from them, right next to some trash containers... Such an unassuming location for something so horrifying and dangerous.

Inside of that pocket dimension, only Witches, their Familiars and the Puella Magi can move freely, and even healthy humans can experience negative side-effects if they spend a long time inside. Even though Puella Magi can project a certain “aura” that mitigates those effects, and dispel most of the damage done by them with a modest infusion of magic, Mariya's polite request to tackle this challenge alone was still a preferable alternative to both women entering together to that dreaded place.

Besides, their mission to contact Hei Ryung was still at hand... And even though Julia might have a harder time trying to convince her without Mariya's help, time was of the essence at this matter. Such is the inherent danger in a Puella Magi's life: You always have to consider the possibility of today being your last day on Earth...

Arrowvale High's Theater (Ulrike)

Maggie felt horribly mortified right now... Like she was the most foolish and ingrate person on the whole wide world. She was about to just take off and run way to never be seen again by any of the theater-club's members... But, her respect for Ulrike's, and the rest of the thespians' hard work and dedication stopped her... It made her feel like she owed her an explanation.

-“...It's because of the kiss scene... You know how I have been avoiding it so far, telling everyone that I'll do it once we act everything from start to end, so it will be more dramatic that way... But I... I...”

It was then when her legs just couldn't hold together any longer, making her collapse on her knees, as she tried to explain with tears in her eyes...

-“I'm sorry, I thought I would be able to do it... I should have quit from the very start... But I was so happy about playing a protagonist role, that I tried to convince myself that I would be able to do it... But I can't... I can't give my first kiss to another girl.”

She said with her last sliver of eloquence, before starting to cry uncontrollably...

Vought Highschool's Ice Rink (Amity)

Even though Amity's response wasn't rude nor unpleasant, there was something about it that made Christine feel even more spiteful... Something that she couldn't quite understand, like a bitting sensation on the back of her neck that told her: “This girl will only bring us trouble”. However, she didn't want to make an scene in front of her friends, specially not without any evidence to sustain her suspicion... For now, she would try to bite her tongue... For the time being, at least.

Evelyn, on the other hand, felt even happier after hearing that she had been doing this for some time already... Maybe she was the secret weapon they have been looking for, after all! And when she heard Amity's inquiry about the upcoming practices, she couldn't help but to laugh and feel like she liked her already...

-“Ha ha ha ha ha!... We have only just finished practicing, and you already want to train even more?... Ha ha ha ha ha!”, trying to calm herself down, but still full of energy, she continued, “...I like your spirit! A true winner always has her eyes on the prize, after all! Don't worry, I'll send you all the important information via e-mail... But...”

She said before making a dramatic pause, as she pointed towards Amity's with her right index finger...

-“I'll only do that if you fulfill this important mission: I want you to join us on our epic quest for delicious pizza! If you refuse, you'll be branded as a traitor and your name will be forever tainted by infamy and disgrace!”

She said before doing her best “evil laughter” attempt... which sounded way sillier than outright scary, but was still kinda disturbing. Then, she cleared her voice, while dropping the hammy antics, and stating in a polite and humble way...

-“...If you don't have an inconvenient, of course. We'd be honored if you could join us.”

Mariya

"In death there is true liberty..."

"Open your eyes young child, your discourse is clear..."

"Mommy, mommy... have you seen my mommy? She's this tall and has red hair and big blue eyes and..."

"... You'll only find death at the witches door, young traveler..."

"You don't think I don't know that?" Marya giggled politely at a perfect volume for her own voice to smoothly slosh through the ebb and flow of the cacophony that was for her ears only. She waved a hand in some direction, towards the place where the labyrinth innocuously waited for her behind the rotting foodstuffs of a few days. What the gesture meant was lost on anybody who happened to see it, a sort of 'come hither' flicker of the hand when nobody was there to be summoned. With a chipper nod Mariya took an about face and marched her way back to Juliya.

"It's a full manifestation, looks like. I could tackle it on my own- yes, I know I have powers beyond my own understanding good sir -maybe, but it would probably be far more impactful on my gem than I could recover from the Witch as a result." Practical enough thoughts from the teenager, who had never shown any particular brand of emotionality with the few witches she'd managed to fight to victory (obviously, as she was still here) before. Just a nigh flippant air of casual discourse, including well reasoned speculation on what would be transcribed on her school lunch menu that next day. "I don't know if the girl we're looking for could be persuaded to join us here, but it might be our best option. Miss Crow, what do you think?" And then she lapsed back into some kind of long-winded joke with the ever-present voices.

Seika

"Arg, again!" I got caught again, in my Hunter! Even if these aren't witches I can't afford to take another big hit. Seika tumbled and with practiced motion combined with a Puella's reflexes sprang back up. She gritted her teeth and took a moment to regain her balance, then held out her hand to summon a piece of meet on a bone. It was a hefty piece, fitting well into the palm of her hand. I'll have to hunt the witch anyway, I shouldn't go easy on the summon. She tossed it up into the air and leaped forward. "Nekochan, take out the other one!" She prepared another arrow and aimed it back at her original target, as she landed taking another jump to push her alongside it to try again on her finishing shot though avoiding the straight overhead path she had taken before in case it tried to counter attack based on on her last move. As she did this, her tiger, an unnaturally white and blue striped creature materialized from the darkness to swallow the piece of meat she'd tossed and roaring with its intimidating voice, looking to accomplish its current task.

Amity bit her lip, suppressing the urge to say the first thought that popped into her mind. It wouldn't help team morale to ask if Evelyn had gone nuts, and besides, she was quite used to dealing with stoned American tourists in Vancouver. The suggestion of pizza reminded her that she was hungry—although it was amazing how easily she could block out physical sensations like hunger or exhaustion. Long practice?

"Yeah, sure," she said. "Pizza sounds great. Erm, I wasn't asking for more practice immediately. Just wanted to know what our weekly schedule's going to be like."

She took off the bulky helmet and shook her head to get her hair out of her eyes. Helmet hair, she noticed: that could be sorted out easily enough.

Ulrike hadn't thought of that. She was so busy getting into her character, she forgot she'd have to kiss another girl, or how the other girl would even feel about it. While she was willing to go through with it, it looked like Maggie wasn't it.

It was then that an idea came to her head, and she picked up by her shoulders, and patted the poor girl. "Don't worry maggie! I have a plan."

Without another word Ulrike hooked an arm around Maggie's waist and leaned her over bringing her bringing her face closer to the other girl's. Figuring she'd be more than a little surprised, Ulrike waited a moment, firmly holding her there, before softly speaking to Maggie. "Look into that mirror behind me. Seems like we're kissing no?"

Near the storage facility (Seika)

Reacting to their hunter's offensive maneuver, the second Familar tried to interrupt her attack once again. However, instead of taking her down like a few moments ago, this time it was the monster the one who was struck by Seika's “little pet”, who then proceeded to pin it down to the ground. Now that it wasn't moving under the surface, Seika could notice that this one looked like a giant lizard who had a certain resemblance to the goat, implying they were minions of the same Witch after all.

Taken by surprise by the sudden appearance of a second hunter, the goat's concentration was finally broken, allowing Seika to strike it with a direct shot that shattered the creature into several pieces which disseminated all over the place.

Vought Highschool's Ice Rink (Amity)

Clearly excited after hearing Amity accepting their invitation, Evelyn exclaimed:

-“Excellent! In that case, it would be better to get going as soon a possible. I don't know about you, but I'm starving right now! I still intend to send you all the important information via e-mail, but I can explain it to you on our way there, if you please.”

And so, after having finished their post-practice activities and having changed into their everyday clothes, the four girls headed together towards the pizza-place. On the way there, it was mostly Evelyn who did the talking, as she explained the training schedule and other important details related to the team, including their not so stellar reputation during the previous seasons. Esther only spoke on a few occasions, though most of the time they were just strange non-sequiturs because how drowsy she was at the moment. Meanwhile, Christine stayed silent during the whole way, mostly keeping an eye on Amity, trying to decipher exactly why she felt so uneasy about her...

After a brief ride on the subway, the four girls arrived to a small pizza restaurant. It wasn't one of those standardized locals from any of the big franchises that you can find almost anywhere, but a local business with its own peculiar and captivating air to it; not overly fancy, but not sloppy either. The air was filled with the pleasant aroma of the dough and spices used on their dishes, and the overall atmosphere was welcoming and cozy... In short, it just seemed like a nice place for friends to have a good meal and spend a pleasant time.

-“Not bad at all, isn't it?”, exclaimed Evelyn as she addressed Amity, “Esther was the one that found this place; she's our personal gourmet and 'discoverer of the nice things'... Or something like that. Anyway, let us find a table.”

Fortunately for them, the place wasn't too crowded at the moment, so it didn't take long for them to find a nice table. Evelyn decided to sit next to Amity, as she wanted to talk a bit more with her, while Chris tried to put as much distance between them as possible. When the waiter arrived with the menus, Evelyn spoke to Amity...

-“As our honor guest, it's only fair for you to make the order, Amity. Choose whatever you'd like, comrade!... As long as it doesn't contain eggplant, of course! Chris hates those things.”

However, before she could speak her mind, Esther interrupted with a strangely lucid inquiry, despite her still lethargic condition...

-“...You know, Asakura is a rather strange surname for a Canadian... Isn't it a Japanese name?... What's up with that, Amy? ...”

Arrowvale High's Theater (Ulrike)

Because how distraught and ashamed she was at the moment, Maggie didn't even heard what Ulrike first said to her, nor she could react fast enough to what she had done next. Rather surprised and confused, she couldn't even grasp exactly what had just happened, until her co-star told her was she was doing.

-“A perspective trick?”, she thought as she saw their reflection on the mirror, “...Such a simple, yet elegant solution... Why didn't I thought about it?! We are already using similar techniques in the fight choreographies, so it could work here too!”

Evidently relieved after realizing there was a way to do the scene without having to give away her first kiss, Maggie's tears stopped at that moment, as she gave Ulrike a big hug as a sign of her gratitude for finding a solution to her problem.

-“...Thanks Ms. Acker, thanks a lot... I'm sorry for causing so much trouble...”

However, as she held on to the other girl, she couldn't help but to feel little embarrassed after noticing that the way she was embracing her looked a little bit too “romantic”, and that if she tried to let go from that position, she might fall flat on her back in a moderately painful manner.

-“Erh... Ms. Acker... Could you please, let me go gently?”, she said in a shy manner as her face turned red, “...I can't do it by myself from this position.”

Seika

"Ha ha! Finally got it, 20 points. Now for you, strange familiar." Seika stood still and prepared an arrow taking careful aim with Nekochan pinning it. Something rang familiar between these two familiars, probably making them from the same witch. Something new with every witch fight, at least it wasn't boring. But Seika had to figure out if these things had a witch nearby they spawned from or were they just rogue familiars. No way to confirm it until she finds the Witch's labyrinth, as if the Witch was already hunted by some other Magical Girl these could be all that is left. "Take this!" Seika let loose her arrow at the chameleon-like familiar.

Ulrike

"Right, of course." Ulrike stood Maggie up straight before letting go of her. She then noticed that Maggie had been calling her 'Ms. Acker'. To be perfectly honest the formality was quite flattering. However, Maggie being uncomfortable around her was unacceptable.

"You can call me Ulrike, Maggie. There's no reason for this formality, yes?" she gave her a smile after she said that hoping to switch to a more casual tone.

Note: Sorry for the delay... I've been dealing with a certain case of Writer's Block... But don't worry about me abandoning anything any time soon... My sincere hatred for those that do exactly that is so great, that I won't allow myself to do so.

Near the storage facility (Seika)

Despite its “comrade” having been slain, and finding itself on the other side of the fence, now that it had to fight two hunters at the same time, the reptilian-looking Familiar wasn't ready to flee nor to back down. While Seika's tiger managed to temporally stop its movement, that didn't nullify its power to blend into the environment, which it used once again to slip out of the grip of its captor, and to avoid being hit by Seika's arrow.

For a moment, the distortion caused by the creature's movement wasn't anywhere to be found, but its foul presence was still evident to any observant Puella Magi; the monster was merely preparing for another surprise attack. This Familiar was determined to kill its target despite the odds being stacked against it right now... This kind of daunting behavior wasn't something typical of them, as most of them preferred to flee before dealing with a lost battle...

Arrowvale High's Theater (Ulrike)

As she regained her balance, Maggie took a moment to clean the tears in her eyes. Even though she was relieved, she still felt embarrassed after making a scene in front of her co-star; she was the kind of person that preferred to keep her troubles to herself in order to avoid disturbing those around her... And to avoid mockery by those that might consider those issues petty or dumb.

In a lot of ways, dealing with this situation upfront was something she wasn't accustomed to... Interacting with other people wasn't something she was good at, which was one of the reasons why she preferred to keep a certain distance between her and the others by addressing them via their last-names... And now that Ulrike was asking her to use her first name instead, she felt slightly weird about it...

-“...OK... If that's fine by you, Ms. Ac- Erh... I mean, Ms. Ulrike...”

While her timid demeanor was still prevalent, Maggie tried her best in order to speak to Ulrike face to face, though she still had difficulties to make eye contact...

-“... I'm sorry for being such a nuisance... But, I'll try my best in order to do things right from now on.”, taking a pause as she instinctively made a slight bow, she continued, “If you excuse me, I have to go back to my dressing room, so we can do proceed with the rehearsal as soon as possible.”

Near a residential zone (Mariya and Julia)

Not keen with the idea of tackling this challenge on their own, the teacher and student decided to go for their original target before venturing into the accursed place. A prudent choice and a sensible plan, indeed... Unfortunately, even the best plans can be derailed by unforeseen circumstances, specially when dealing with the horrors that have been thriving in St. Arthelais.

Before Mariya could climb to the motorcycle, something caught her ankles and dragged her through the portal, into the Witch's realm. It was so sudden that she couldn't even see what it was, but it felt like a pair of barbed-wires which completely restricted her legs' movement. In just an instant, the girl found herself several feet above the ground, hanging upside-down under the gaze of a bright red-eye.

The whole place was barely lit by a dim and sickly crimson glow, and a thick mist saturated the atmosphere, making it difficult to distinguish anything else about her attacker beyond that hideous blood-shot orb that was locked onto her. The situation was grim, but not lost yet: With her hands still free, she could use her Soul Gem to transform in order to fight the monster.

Mariya

"Isn't she wise, grandmother? I suppose it isn't retreating more so than it is tactical regrouping, as my friends back in school would say. I wonder if that boy from before is still into me, no no I know I won't be giving anything up, this isn't the time or place for that sort of-!"

Mariya's extensive multiple-addressee monologue hadn't even been a quarter of the way through all the points she was trying to make before the maxim about 'the best laid plans' was rudely proved false. Her usually nonchalant demeanor held fairly well even with the sensation of razors lashing against her ankles and the forceful dragging back in the direction from which she'd come. She spoke quickly and prudently, with a slight necessary increase in volume, but it was still not exactly the most seemingly appropriate tone of voice for a situation as direly urgent as this. "Hurry and try to get Miss Ryung, Miss Crow! I'll try to get out ASAP and hold the fort until you guys get back!" Whether that was a wise plan or not was up to debate, but Mariya had no further input to make on the subject given that she was within the second mired in the depths of a Witches Labyrinth.

"Rather dramatic entry, hm? I'm thinking I'll have to let you guys out for a bit, okay?" The girl calmly murmured a quick prayer in her native Russian, eyes locked onto the orb that was regarding her as if Sauron himself. Her hands shot to her hair, currently hanging subject to the whims of gravity due to her alignment relative to the ground. With a practiced motion borne of a good year of fighting the good fight, as it were, she released the dull bauble she kept in the tresses of her mane and let it's energy envelope her in full.

Whereas most magical girls found grace and beauty in their transformations, or at least spiffy costumes, Mariya almost literally shriveled. Her skin lost it's youthful radiance, her normally well-composed posture gained an almost corpse-like unnatural rigidity to it. Like a soldier at attention, she stiffened up, bones creaked, a rattling and mausoleum-dry breath dully escaped her now pale grey lips. The transformation was over in an instant, no pomp or fanfare, and a girl of great power was left, still in the grasp of a captor but hopefully not for long.

Her orb was now in her hands, and with speedy deliberation she called forth precisely five wisp-like spirits, so icy blue even looking at them seemed to drop the ambient temperature, and directed them to pass through the eye of the beast at their lumbering speed. Her Soul Gem glowered a mute color all the while, nestled now against the bones of her bare neck, fairly clean of negativity from recent victories yet still supremely weak of vibrancy.

Julia didn't have the chance to mutter a curse before her charge was dragged into the labyrinth. She hesitated for a second, the memories of all those she had left behind both in the war against men, and war against the witches. But throwing herself in the labyrinth would not make a difference. She didn't fear death, nor witches, but wasting her life in doing something that could be deemed impossible was not wise.

"Damn. Mariya." Julia said with barely contained anger as her field medic conditioning kicked in, and revved her bike so suddenly it performed a wheelie, while forsaking driving etiquette and sped up towards the last known position of the other magical girl, Ryung.

"My parents were nisei," said Amity, unconsciously switching to the Japanese pronunciation for the word. "BC has a big Japanese community, and that was where I used to live. They insisted on me using Japanese at home, so I never forgot it."

She paused to study the menu, taking the time to consider her future teammates. Initial impressions: Christine seemed intent on avoiding her: she could live with that, although she hoped that it wouldn't spill over to the rink. Languid, quiet Esther had surprising flashes of quickness; Amity took that as a promising sign. And, of course, team leader Evelyn.

There's our four temperaments: choleric, melancholic, phlegmatic, and marijuanic. The thought passed quickly, just there long enough to prompt a brief secret smile, before she applied herself full-time to the job of ordering the meal. "Do mushrooms and pepperoni sound good to everyone?"

Out of the corner of her eye she glanced out the window. One thing to get used to out here in the desert: temperatures plunged very quickly after sundown, and she made a note to bring a jacket or a sweater next time. Especially, she thought, given how much time she'd be spending out there in the streets.

Ulrike just smiled a little when the words "Ms. Ulrike" came out of Maggie's lips. It wasn't perfect but it was a start. Patting Maggie on the shoulder Ulrike decided it was time to send the girl on her way. It would be no good if the co-star wasn't ready for the rehersal either.

"Go on, get ready. I am anticipating your performance Maggie." Once the other girl was out the door, she turned back to her other visitor. "Now where were we?"

Inside ???'s Labyrinth (Mariya)

Taken by surprise due to the sudden change its “prey” just went through, the monster couldn't react on time to Mariya's counterattack. The ethereal flames ignited the red orb, staggering the creature and weakening its grasp just long enough for the girl to slip out of it.

Using her enhanced reflexes and agility, the girl could stick a good landing despite the poor light conditions and the instability of the terrain she was standing on, which felt like some sort of mildly slippery flakes... Almost like walking over a layer of thin, shredded plastic.

The light emitted by the wilt-o-wisps allowed Mariya to catch a brief glimpse of its enemy's true appearance. It had a rather tall and elongated form, with several long and thin squirming appendages all over it, most likely the ones it used to drag her into this place. It also had a distinctive “mechanical” quality to it, almost as if it had been assembled from scrap-metal and discarded electronic components.

Now enraged after having been hurt by the ghostly fire, the creature flailed several of its whip-like appendages in the general direction Mariya was standing on. A normal person would have been instantly torn to shreds by the speed and momentum those things were carrying... But Puella Magi are anything but normal when it comes to their battle prowess.

Near Hei Ryung's home (Julia)

Rushing through the roads at a potentially dangerous speed, it didn't took long for Julia to reach the address her contact had given her. It was a rather standard apartment building, not too dissimilar to the one where her own place was located. The screeching noise her bike's wheels made as it came to a sudden stop startled some of the residents, who stepped outside to see what had just happened.

This kind of unwanted attention was something detrimental under any circumstances, but time was of the essence here. Besides, she still needed to confirm if Hei Ryung was a Puella Magi in the first place, because if she wasn't, she'd only be dragging an innocent into a lethal situation.

At the pizza restaurant (Amity)

-“Canadian-Japanese, eh?...”, Esther muttered with a certain tint of wonder in her voice, “...Such a peculiar combination... Given Canadians' reputation as overly polite people... And Japaneses' strict adherence to etiquette and conduct-norms... Wow... Talk about courtesy overload... Very interesting, very interesting, indeed...”

She said before dozing-off once again as her head fell into the table. Slightly embarrassed by her friend's peculiar conduct, (not that she was any less eccentric, mind you) Evelyn just left out a brief nervous chuckle, before saying:

-“...Well, that's our Esther... Anyway, back to the pizza: I'll say that's a really good order! It's been a while since we had Pepperoni, now that I think about it, but it's always a welcome topping.”

After her friend finished, Christine stated in a stoic manner, as she crossed her arms over her chest:

-“...It's fine. No objections here.”

...While Esther didn't say anything, instead expressing her approval via a thumbs-up gesture as she laid with her face against the table. So, with an unanimous approval, Evelyn proceeded to confirm...

-“OK! Mushrooms and pepperoni will be!”

...Before calling the waiter to place the order. After she had done it, she turned her attention back to Amity...

-“Sooooo... While we wait for the food to arrive... Hmmmmm... Well, why don't you tell us something about you, Amity? You seem like a really nice girl, and I'm sure you have lots of interesting things to say.”

Arrowvale High's Theater (Ulrike)

Without speaking another word, Maggie left the room so they could proceed with the upcoming rehearsal. Letting out a sigh of relief as it emerged from its makeshift cover, the Incubator spoke once again...

-“...That was close... My heart was racing back there...”

Then, as it acknowledged Ulrike's question, the little fellow added...

-“...Oh yeah, contracts and stuff... But, before that, I have a question:”, it said as it tilted its head in an inquisitive manner, “Why was that girl so worried about a kiss? I see humans kissing all the time, pretty much everywhere, and it seems to be a pleasant experience for them... So, why did she looked so sad about it?”

Mariya

Still being young her landing was clean and she maintained a good spring of step even though she had only milliseconds prior been suspended in the air in a complete 180 degree superposition from her current one. Though to be fair no small part of that ease and grace was the supernatural power of an ancient system of supernatural power inscribing itself into her very metaphysical being.

"Looks like something out of Computer Science class... Odds and ends, really. Not the sort of thing they'd have had back in your time, no. Maybe the silhouette?" Dearth of anybody to actually talk to sans the thing that was trying to kill her Mariya was nothing but constant whispers, a steady hiss of information escaping through a mouth otherwise preoccupied with drawing breaths in a manner far more casual than her current situation seemed to demand. "What is that tune you're humming? For the life of me, I can't figure it out..." She tossed the orb up in the air with a nonchalant flick of her dominant wrist, which got some good air time on the sphere.

Followed by her, jumping quickly out of the path of the beast's appendages. She caught her weapon in midair with her unfailing supernatural grace and directed the spirits already out to make another pass through the thing's eye. They gurgled and moaned as they did so, a dark blight of energy following in their wake as they seemingly sapped what (admittedly little) life was present in the hum of the Witches' airspace.

Seika

Seika whistled, and Nekochan turned and jumped over to Seika's side. Seika drew an arrow and walked backwards while Nekochan continued to face the other way as the tiger kept pace. They moved over to stand against the wall of some storage facility, and as Seika stopped Nekochan turned around to face out. "I have to try to limit the number of directions this thing can attack me from." Seika knelt down next to her tiger to remove her profile popping up above her tiger and drew three arrows at once. As silly as it was to shoot three arrows that would be wildly inaccurate, with her Puella reflexes she had the strength to put power behind them and did it to try and hit the thing point blank when it got close.

Julia

Julia Crow thought. Maybe that squid had been a little too abrupt, but how could she convince test the other girl and get her attention without being overtly creepy? She sighed, as she took out her helmet, and bringing a small notebook of her work she somehow had estranged in her bike, she ripped the used pages and stuffed them back, and the began writing anew.

She wrote some random junk and then on a page "WITCH" before folding it up, and composing her best poker face and ringing the bell. She would try to pass it off as some notebook the aforementioned Hei Ryung dropped. And the curt "Witch" word would make a magical girl react, but otherwise be mostly ignored if it was normal. At least that's how it worked in Julia's mind.

Hang in there, Mariya. She said to herself mentally.

Ulrike

Ulrike paused and stared at the incubator for a minute, vaguely hoping that would change the question to something else. It didn't though, so she decided to go ahead an answer. "You've probably not seen to many girls kissing girls, yes? That is because not everyone is the same." She made a gesture to the door Maggie left through. "She does not like to kiss girls."

Inside ???'s Labyrinth (Mariya)

The creature was so focused on its ill-fated offensive maneuver, that it didn't have the chance to dodge the ethereal flames. This time, instead of a momentary flash of pain, the spirits clung to the red orb, incinerating it as the monster left out a piercing shriek of agony.

However, before the fire could spread through the rest of its body, the creature did something to prevent it: It “discarded” the end section of its body along with the burnt orb, revealing that the area behind it was mostly similar to the one it had just lost. With a new orb intently focused on its attacker, the creature displayed another of its offensive capabilities: A concentrated “energy beam” generated by its orb, which set the terrain aflame and cut everything on its path.

Near the storage facility (Seika)

After visualizing its hunter taking aim with her back against the wall and her legs firmly planted on the ground, the familiar decided to attack from below, as it seemed like her most vulnerable spot right now. Even if the tiger counterattacked, all it needed to do was to kill its summoner fast enough for it to fade into the ether once again.

It seemed like a good plan from its perspective, so it proceeded to execute it by rising from below at a great speed, hoping to kill the Puella Magi in a swift and clean strike.

Arrowvale High's Theater (Ulrike)

Speaking with a strangely cheerful tone, the Incubator replied...

-“As a matter of fact, I have seen a few girls kissing other girls before! One of them even told me that love doesn't know barriers, and that a kiss from a person you really love is one of the best things in the world.”

...Before returning to its inquisitive attitude, and confused demeanor...

-“So, are you telling me that girl lied to me? That a kiss can be a bad thing, too?! My people don't really have kisses, nor gestures similar to them, so I don't understand how they work. I thought they were always a pleasant thing... But now I can't tell for sure.”

Putting its front paws over the sides of its head, as if it had a migraine, the little guy exclaimed in annoyance...

-“Aaaaaaaah! Humans are so complicated...”

"Hmmm." Amity considered. "Well, what's there to say? I'm still new here and getting used to the city. It's all so...different from Vancouver. In a good way, of course," she hastened to add.

Surreptitiously she glanced at the ring on her finger: only the faintest fringe of shadow was visible around the edge of the gemstone, but already she felt a little edgy. Situational awareness, her coach had called it, the nearly clairvoyant sense of the game's ebb and flow: here she lacked any awareness of the city through which she'd soon be hunting; the folding tourist map was just enough to get her around, but vital information like bus and train routes were still a mystery—not to mention whatever local incubators were operating; certainly the weasel-thing who'd contracted with her in the deserted hockey rink in Vancouver hadn't tried to contact her...

Still, she had a lot of experience hiding her disquiet, and the pause in her words could easily be taken for thought. "Oh, speaking of which. What's the audience like around here? I know hockey's not so popular around here, but we still get people watching us, right?"

At the pizza restaurant (Amity)

Slightly perplexed after hearing Amity's response, Evelyn tried to reformulate her inquiry.

-“Erh... That's no precisely what I meant. As much as I'd like to have an ace that is 100% focused on the game, I'm sure there's more to you than just a passion for hockey. You know, hobbies, interests, miscellaneous trivia, dirty secrets we could use to keep you in check in case you go rogue... You know, what else there's to you when you aren't making those killer shots.”

She was so intrigued about finding out more about Amity, that the significance of the question she had just made didn't hit her until a moment later. To be frank, it was a question she didn't want to address right now, something that made her quite nervous as she tried to tell an optimistic lie.

-“O-Of course we h-have an audience! I mean, we're the Crusaders after all! The coolest team there is all St. Arthelais! ”

She said in a rather unconvincing tone, before letting out a nervous laugh. While she wanted to stay away from conversation for the time being, and despite being fully aware of her friend's reluctance to speak of the topic, Christine felt compelled to state something using the same stoic tone she had been employing so far...

-“Either you tell her, or I'm gonna have to break the bad news myself, and you know subtlety isn't one of my virtues.”

Dropping the goofy act after hearing her friend speaking in such a serious manner, Eve calmed herself down before replying...

-“...Alright, my friend.”, it was then when her tone an demeanor took a rather somber and solemn turn, almost the complete opposite of what she had displayed so far, “To tell you the truth Amity, we're in kind of dire straits at the moment. Despite performing better than everyone expected during the previous tournament, our support right now is at an all time low; some even say that by giving them 'false hopes' during the last season, we have only made them more disappointed when we were eliminated at the quarter finals.”

Then she took a pause before leaning her chair backwards as she balanced it on the tips of its rear legs while she looked towards the celling; a rather strange “meditative stance”, but her keen sense of balance made it work for some reason.

-“...Which is why this tournament, we need to perform a real miracle for the team to have any future. I'm sorry for putting that kind of pressure over the shoulders of everyone, but that's the way the cookie crumbles.”
