So this is what would happen if you cast Johnny Depp as Ralph Fiennes's character in The Grand Budapest Hotel and put him in a James Bond movie. Everything the world has been waiting for...?

Putting this one in the "slightly stupid fun" category for now.

Looking for some stories?

Saw the trailer the other day posted on another site and was considering making a thread (I really need to learn how to embed trailers here). Thanks for posting it.

I tend toward agreeing with that site's comment to the effect that Johnny Depp should really stop doing what he keeps doing.

It looks slightly amusing but pretty terrible and I've read two of the books in the series from which the film derives, and it looks really "off". I actually haven't read the specific book the film is based on, which was completed after the author's death, but from the two I have read, I'd note that Mortdecai is a First-Person Smartass borderline Villain Protagonist. He does have that obliviousness toward American culture in the books, which is something I actually would have thought an adaptation would have toned down, but he isn't someone who comes across as a twit.

I can kind of see how that's the Mortdecai you'd get if the first person narration was removed, but the books work a lot better with it. In terms of the books' tone, I'd put it somewhere between Lord of War and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (both of which do use First-Person Smartass narration).
