How long do the great voice actors have left

In light of the recent news about Robin Williams may he rest in peace, i have to say, it makes me wonder how long do any of the great voice actors left.

It was only in recent months that i found out about the passing of Shaggy's voice actor, as well as the voice actors of three DCAU characters, and i almost forgot about the fact that Yzma's VA's died years ago. Much like the DCAU V As, Robin Williams' passing was a lot to take in. I've known that he was the Genie in "Aladdin" for quite some time, but now that he's gone, i don't think i ever truly appreciated his talent. All i saw with the Genie was a character within the story who provided some comedy, i don't think i saw the mad genius that is Robin Williams.

The same thing applied with Rodney Dangerfield: i sort of knew about him through his voice acting in "Rover Dangerfield" and his Guest appearance on "The Simpsons", but it wasn't until he was dead that somewhat started to appreciate his comedy, and i was around 14 when he died.

Tony Jay also falls into this category: I started to enjoy his role as Frollo in "The Hunchback of Notre Dame", but it happened about 2 years before his death. I wish i could have enjoyed his talent more when he was alive.

And then you have the great Vincent Price; i've heard his voice acting in "The Great Mouse Detective" and "The 13 Ghosts of Scooby-Doo", but for years, i didn't even know who the guy was, or his Horror movie background. It wasn't until years after his death (i was 3 when he died) that i started to appreciate Vincent Price's work as voice actor, and that just feels sad.

How long until we lose more of the greats? Clancy Brown, Jim Cummings, Tim Curry, James Earl Jones or Mark Hamill (they're already pushing it on their years as it is). Who knows? It might even be Mae Whitman, Scott Menville, Dante Basco, Hynden Walch, Zach Tyler Eisen, Greg Cipes, Grey De Lisle, Will Friedle or even Tara Strong who kicks the bucket next.

[up][up][up]Dude, don't you think you're kinda overthinking this?

Granted, it does, did, and always will suck when voice actors (or regular actors for that matter) we like pass on. Nobody's arguing about that part.

But maybe it's for the best that we don't focus on predicting how long they have to live, and do focus on how awesome they are.

In other words:

Peace. grin

And as terrible as losing any one of the greats would be, it's not the end of the world. For instance, Mel Blanc died years ago, and new actors were able to step into his roles. For a video game example, Troy Baker really only stepped into the limelight about five years ago, with Persona 4 and Final Fantasy XIII, and he's already considered to be one of video gaming's leading men now, with top-tier titles like Bioshock Infinite and The Last Of Us under his belt.

Death and loss are terrible and should be grieved, and passed voice actors may indeed be irreplaceable (Mel Blanc is still a nearly unparalleled Man of a Thousand Voices), but the world won't coming to a crashing halt. It stumbles, we grieve, and then we stand up again and move on. In twenty years, the next generation will have their own set of voice actors to admire, and the world will be no better or worse for it—just different. Don't stress too much about it: just mourn the deceased, celebrate their works, and always keep the memories they made in a cherished place in your heart.

Aye, new will come to supplant the old. Think of Jeremy Shada from Adventure Time, guy's younger than i am (by about 8 years i think), should have a hell of a career ahead of him in which voice acting will probably figure prominently, even if he continues pursuing live gigs after the failure of Incredible Crew

If'n ya want me to be honest...

Much of the first generation of animation voice acting is gone, pretty much. The few who are still here are June Foray, Janet Waldo and Stan Freberg.

The second generation of animation voice acting, however, is alive and kicking. The oldest of them are in their early sixties, so I estimate that if nothing goes wrong, most of them will live a couple more decades.

Is this thread suppose to be about dead voice actors or voice actors who we think are gonna die?

Anyway, a lot of voice actors today range from middle age to probably their 60s. I think they'll still be able to live long and well if they dont encounter a freak accident.

Even though I am so sad by the recent news about Robin Williams, I believe that we should celebrate the voice actors who are still living and their contributions to the current animation. We should never forget about the voice actors who had died, but left a great mark in the animation world. Robin Williams will never be forgotten and neither will Mel Blanc, Casey Kasem and many others who has passed away.

I love animation, TV, movies, YOU NAME IT!

If it makes you feel any better, voice actors can have extremely LONG careers. Just as a for instance, Jackson Beck, who was the original voice for Bluto in the Fleischer Bros. Popeye cartoons, a series that started in the mid '30s, was still doing voice overs 50 years later (he voiced the intro for GI Joe in the 80's).

Still, most of the old-school voice actors I grew up with are gone, now (Mel Blanc, Casey Kasem, Paul Winchell, Don Messick, etc etc). Not really much to be done about it. New actors will and must arise to replace the old. Interesting story: Donald Duck has had, get this, a total of two voice actors. The first was Clarence "Ducky" Nash, and the second is Tony Anselmo, a former Disney animator that Nash hand-picked to succeed him. Nash overheard Anselmo doind a Duck voice for his own amusement and approached him about taking the part over. See there? Continuance.

It's the same thing as everything else. People die, and it's never a pleasant experience but it isn't the end of anything. Life moves on, and you should only get upset about those people passing away when they actually pass away. When they do, you salute them for their accomplishments and honor their legacy by remembering what they did, not agonize that they should have been around a few weeks longer.

The only "legendary" voice actors I can think of who are getting up there in age is Frank Welker and Peter Cullen, but for all we know they could live to be 100, giving them another 30+ years (just checked, didn't know Cullen is 73, doesn't look a day over 45).

They're human beings. Human beings die. Until then, he can't prepare for it and we should simply cherish their gifts while they are around.

To me, the question is impossible to answer because can't know all the greats yet. I could even name a few greats that already have passed that haven't been mentioned in this thread yet (like Lorenzo Music), but even though I'll miss them, I know their proteges and those they've inspired will carry the torch.

Reminder: Offscreen Villainy does not count towards Complete Monster.

[up] Technically, no. It can be answered.

And yeah, the loss of Lorenzo Music is kind of depressing. No one else who's played Garfield can ever come up to him.

Refer to Renewal's post for more or less exactly what I was gonna say.

It was only in recent months that i found out about the passing of Shaggy's voice actor, as well as the voice actors of three DCAU characters, and i almost forgot about the fact that Yzma's VA's died years ago.
It's important to note, Eartha Kitt and Casey Kasem were known for much more than voice acting. Kitt was the original live action Catwoman, as well as in general a revered actor and singer in her own right. Casey Kasem was one of the most popular radio deejays to exist, hosting American Top 40 for most of his life.

Insert witty 'n clever quip here.

As is Tara Strong.

The oldest I can think of off the top of my head are June Foray, Billy West (62), and Frank Welker (68). I honestly thought Frank Welker was in his seventies at least.

I don’t even know anymore.

I agree that as we are flawed individuals, all people will die sooner or later, even the great voice actors. But, I'm pretty sure there are some talented young voice actors who would replace the greats.

And besides, we shouldn't worry about this now. This thread is just a reaction to the suicide to the guy that voiced the Genie in Disney's Aladdin.

And as well that someone else will take over as Genie, like Dan Castelleneta!

Even when the great VA's die, new ones will replace them and their roles most likely. (Unless said character is retired out of respect, like Troy Mc Clure and Lionel Hutz from The Simpsons)

Jeremi as mentioned, Clare Collette, Ashly Ball, Michele Creber, Vincent Martella, to name a few are fresh-faced on the scene. Not to mention anime companies are receiving many new faces recruiting for dubs every year. Shame they don't get a lot of respect seeming biasedtowards the veterans, but all in all English voice acting's doing well.

Anime dub companies are always getting new people these days, and meanwhile, I keep seeing recognized anime actors who barely ever DO anime anymore, or aren't heard of again in voice-over all together. It's not a well-paying job.
