Hello. First time posting on the Forums, so I don't know if this should go under Just A Face And A Caption or does not illustrate, but regardless... It kind of feels like to me that the image was just added for the sake of an image. There's no description of who the character is, even in the examples. I for one do not know who it is, and other than giving a rather Hollywood Nerd looking character, doesn't really illustrate the trope either, which is about a low income person getting to collage on a scholarship and having to adjust to the eccentric rich students there.

Overall, I feel like this trope isn't something that can properly be captured in an image, and should be pulled.

Definite JAFAAC, needs to go.

Classic JAFAAC there. Only thing missing would be "Haruhi shows us how it's done".

The picture shows us nothing. She's not even loaded down with books.

It does say "Commoner" in hard-to-read text, which is a part of the trope. And... well, that's it. Nothing else even attempts to illustrate the trope.

Pluck.

Anyone know of a good series where there's an obvious commoner among rich students that includes an illustrating pic? I know a few examples (and there's a list on the page for some reason), but none I think would make a good illustration.

Basically the same scene from the manga:

To say that that's better wouldn't really say a lot. It does address the trope, though, so it's at least passable, but not all that good.

Well, that fixes the JAFAAC issue...a little texty but I'm good with it pending something else.

I'm not crazy about that one; there's lots of telling, but not much showing. It's better than the current, but that's really not saying much.

Would a picture of someone holding that huge scholarship paper work?

There is some showing; the scholarship kid is in shoddier clothing than the other guy, and the glasses are often shorthand for being studious.

Eh, I would look at other suggestions but it is better than no image.

I was rather reluctant to [tup] the OHSHC suggestion because the pronounced difference gives it too much overlap with Penny Among Diamonds for my liking.

A suggestion based on [up][up]: [1]

I think that might be taking the trope name a little too literally, and doesn't actually illustrate the main point of the trope, which is that it's about someone who get a scholarship to get into a school that character would normally not be able to afford.

Ehh... I'm a little upset because even though the original was a blatant JAFAAC and needed to go, it was still far more visually interesting than any of the suggestions. Which are terrible, btw. And you should feel terrible. Not really, but still don't like them. Kinda drunk, so rambling. Shutting up now.

A picture for this needs to be an upscale school with one person in very tattered clothing looking like they clearly do not belong.

Ouran does this very very well but THAT certainly was not the picture.

[up]Something more like this then? I'm afraid that Haruhi may be visible enough, though. And as I mentioned earlier, she's a better example of Penny Among Diamonds anyway.

It doesn't look like they are in school, it does fit Penny Among Diamonds well though.

All the anime examples are Highschool students with a standard uniform high school uniform making it unsuitable without text really, it's actually part of the reason for the uniforms in the first place.

Heck I would say this is unpicture-able without it being from a Manga or Comic. Of the examples that are on the page I can't find a single panel that does it cleanly or I just do not have access to it. IE Sharo from Gochuumon Wa Usagi Desu Ka The anime she goes on internal laments about how she is trying to hide the fact that she is poor and is a scholarship student at their school by acting like an Ojou-sama The anime image would be just a picture with subtitles telling us that, however I have not read the manga to know if there is a panel better illustrating that.

That doesn't look like this IMO, it just looks like a guy visiting a school which requires uniforms.
