People Officially on-Board:

yd12k: Matt Yew - Lawful Good Human Magical Knight

tricksterson: Grrd'l Shot'rk AKA Shlomo - Chaotic Neutral 3/4 Fishman-Human Hybrid Scientist with a side of Mad

daird: Emily Jones - Chaotic Good Human Mage/Magic Lady

The setting is sort of a world in the style of the 1920s. After fighting a long and bloody world war, the five races (humans, elves, fish-men, goblins, and celestials) agreed to mutual co-existence in order to re-build the shattered world. Ten years later, Theodaad, the city built as a sign of the new union of races, has grown into a thriving metropolis. All is not well, however: old enmities exist from before the war, and peace so far has been tenuous. The economy is firmly in the hands of major corporations and the criminal world.

Any questions can probably be answered in these two threads:

It is dark, and a misty fog comes in over the Dockside-area of Theodaad, great city and symbol of the New Peace. Several characters find themselves in the Yellow Apple, a quasi-legal cabaret/gambling den. People crowd about at tables, both dining and gambling. Conversation abounds, getting quieter the closer one gets to the band playing up on the stage.

Matt Yew and Emily Jones, both living the double life of a Magical Warrior in service to forces on the other side, blend into the crowd, hoping to catch hints as to their next objective.

Meanwhile, Shlomo, the Fish-Man Mad Scientist, is doing anything but blending in: drunken, causing a ruckus in an argument with two scientists about the greater points of onion science and energy.

Matt was thinking to himself. "Geez, I don't get it. First the boss cashes in on my debt after what, 8 years, and then tells me I've got a partner. Said partner turns put to want to plan stuff beforehand, which not only doesn't ever work, but makes things harder when the plans invariably go wrong. What's so wrong with the tried and true method of going in and pointing magic at what the boss says till you can stop? Always worked for me. Of course, she went all 'damaging nonmagical relations', 'not every mission should be solved with violence' and 'collateral damage bad' so now you're sitting in a bar trying to find god knows what.

Emily was leaning up against the far wall, nursing a mug of beer. A breeze whistled through the open window, blowing a lock of fiery red hair over her eyes. She brushed it away, scanning the bar for anyone who might be associated with less-than-savory elements. Dammit, Shadriel, she thought to herself. You could have given us something to work with. A name, a location; hell, a species would have been nice. But no, you have to force us to do all the legwork.

Attention shifts in the hall as the music dims to just a hum as a gnome named Helly Manshock, the M.C., comes to the front of the stage.

"Ladies and Gentlemen, I would like to introduce the star of tonight, all the way from Ovus, Miss Dallah Bensii!"

A tall, elegant woman emerges from the right of the stage, dark hair cut short in a bob. She wears a slim gown of uncertain, shimmering material that flows behind her.

She begins to sing as the band picks up a light tune.

"Oo trovoo, an de sellah havus toning bain..."

A man leaning up on the wall besides Emily pipes up.

"Hm. Interesting. That's an old Ovesian tune she's singing."

"Nonsense!," Shlomo said, waving his hands wildly, Despite appearances he was not drunk but he was agitated. "Onions are incapable of providing the necessary power! Now if you were talking beets..." Then his attention was taken by the singer, less by the songs and more by the words.

Matt, too, notices something: when Dallah entered the room, another tall figure appeared and assumed a guard stance near the door to backstage. He had shoulder-length white hair, a stern expression, and eyes that seemed to glow slightly. He was wearing a long, flowing, robe-like outfit that seemed to be made out of the same material as Dallah's dress.

Emily looks at the man. "Interesting. Know anything about her? She's quite good, but I've never head of her."

The man replies "No, nothing personally. Ovus is a pretty far off place, across the Eastern Ocean, way up on northern part of the Far Continent. Apparently the place is swarming with mages, mostly humans and gnomes. Very quaint place, too, full of lake,s rivers and forests. What's interesting is why she would come all the way here to Theodaad to sing in a place like this, and... it's nothing, really."

Meanwhile, the tall man noticed by Shlomo who appeared when Dallah appeared shifted his gaze towards the direction of Emily and the man.

Schlomo jumped up, gills vibrating and shouted at the stage. "I know you!" then started to work his way towards the singer through the crowd, not being afraid to apply his elbows where needed.

Dallah turns to Shlomo.

"Why, what an awfully rude little fish-person. How dare you interrupt my song!"

The tall man turned his attention away from Emily and the Man to refocus on Shlomo, who he began marching over towards.

Emily's eyes catch the stranger moving through the crowd. Something about him seems off. It's not anything magical, really, just years of practice watching people. She walks up to the man and asks, "Can I speak to you for a minute?"

"Mister Fish-Man, I have never seen you in my life. I am afraid that you have the wrong person."

Meanwhile, the tall man turns towards Emily.

"This does not concern you. I advise for your own safety that you stay out of this. Now if you excuse me, I have something to deal with."

Shlomo saw what he guessed to be a body guard coming for him out of the corner of his eye and went "Yikes!" he patted himself down quickly for anything useful but they'd made him check all the fun toys when he came in. So he scurried away from the stage and towards the nearest exist as fast as possible.

But this wasn't over.

Emily was not used to having someone tell her to stay out of any developing situation. A long series of red markings appeared on her arm. Her contract.

"I take it you can see this," Emily said in a low whisper. "I'm in service to Shadriel. The way I see it, you have two options. Option one is to end any thoughts of mayhem and slink back into whatever hole you crawled out of. Option two is to start a fight with me and my associate in this establishment. You probably ain't gonna win that fight, and if you do, you'll have a ticked-off demon to deal with. I suggest option one."

The tall man turned towards Emily again.

"I shall reiterate this. It is in your best interests to not involve yourself in situations that do not pertain to you."

Just then the doors to the Yellow Apple burst inwards, two men with machine guns and one elf with a shotgun came crashing through.

"Everyone, run for cover!" shouted a man sitting at a table with a pistol.

Another man arrived from the throng of people with a shotgun and began firing back at the attackers.

"Oh, shit." Emily quickly looked over the spells she had available. Fire, ice, wind, quicksand, and several others that might be useful. Quite a good selection, all told. Figuring the ice spell would cause the least collateral damage, she used it on the newcomers.

"Matt, if you're in here, I could use a damn hand! Don't think I can take all of them."

Taking the pistol guys advice, Shlomo dove under the nearest table.

The tall man, seeing that Shlomo was no longer a threat, and that Emily had began to engage the attackers, retreated to join Dallah, who was in the process of moving swiftly backstage. The tall man gave one last furtive glance unto the chaos before diving backstage wityh Dallah, disappearing from view.
