I was a little disappointed that the penultimate episode of this season was another drug trip, but it wasn't a retread, so all was fine. Then the ending hit. Damn.

Good season. I feel it wasn't quite as good as season 2. I felt that this season was a bit more comedy-oriented than drama-oriented until it got to the back half. It really won me over at episode seven, though.

Fanfiction I hate.

That episode four was just something else. I hope they get some awards for it or something.

This season felt like a retread at some parts, but it still worked. That episode eleven was probably the darkest yet. Yikes.

I hope that Sarah Lynn's death is the final nail in the coffin that gets Bojack to clean up his act and actually start to become a good person, or at least stop being a bad person.

I mean, I realize season 4 is probably gonna start the drama cycle all over again, but I really hope things start looking up for Bojack so we don't get Aesop Amnesia and Darkness-Induced Audience Apathy.

I've got Frozen, Spectacular Spider-Man, Crash, Spyro, and Paper Mario fanfics.

[up] The worst thing about Bojack Horseman is that he will always tread back to his asshole days. Which is the intention for the writers: to portray the ever growing downfalls of an Unsympathetic Comedy Protagonist when the reset button isn't around for people to easily forgive him.

The thing is he does keep fucking up... but he doesn't fuck up in the same ways or for the same reasons every time.

Pretty much. Different breed of fuck up, same amount of emotional damage that is difficult to fix.

All in all, it was a solid season. I feel it was a bit of a step down from season 2, though. With the exception of the first episode, the front half of the season felt like it was definitely more comedy-focused than drama-focused. Most of the appeal I think came from the way it played with episodic formats, such as episodes 4, 7, and 9. "Brrap Brrap Pew Pew" rubbed me the wrong way, though. As far as "episodes where the creators are wearing their positions on their sleeves" go, it was better than "Chickens" but not as strong as "Hank After Dark." Thing with "Hank After Dark" was that while it was doing the whole thing where it talks about how we handle it when women accuse powerful men of, well, rape, it was also a strong episode because it was the start of a downward spiral for Diane; she cares about something and it gets her hurt, and then it gets worse. What does "Brrap Brrap Pew Pew" do for Diane's character? Fuck if I know.

Back half was as good as I'd hoped, of course. Lots of gut punches, episode 11 was as dark as we've come to expect and then some. Season ends on a heck of a cliffhanger and now I have to wait a year to find out what happens next.

So rewatching Season 1 I've noticed that the girlfriend who left Todd over the video game was Emily.

So I just binged the first two seasons.

I identified with these characters WAY more than I'm comfortable with.....

[up] I think that's intentional. A big draw to Bojack, as a character and as a show, is that he's a way for us to look at what would happen if we made the wrong decisions, constantly, forever. To reference Season 3, We Are Bojack. Actually I think if they referenced the mirrors from Season 3 (like maybe just a cartoonish glossy reflection) that could make for a good Season 4 advertisement.

Re: Season 3, I did notice the progressive elements leaned on more strongly than in other seasons. Obviously the abortion episode which is the closest to "aesop heavy" the show has, well, ever gotten (though it was still very enjoyable as with the rest of the season). It does feel like set up for a Season 4 though. Watching everyone cut their ties with Bojack near the end feels like almost deliberate setup for a season with Bojack off the grid, sort of like an extended version of season 2's Episode 11. I liked the obligatory Precision F-Strike this season, it was pulled off very well.

There was also a heavier mix of comedy and drama, which I did think helped with the tone somewhat. I liked how it was pulled off better than how it was done in Season 2, where the comedy always felt distinct from drama, so overlong comedic moments felt like they were detracting from the dramatic elements. The worldbuilding is top notch as always, hitting hardest in Episode 4, which was just masterful all around.

My only concern at this point is how things go in the future, because I honestly don't see this story ending until a Season 5. With how things were going in S2 there was the chance to either go for a nice round S3 closure or go all out with a full 5 season arc. How are the writers going to extend the drama of the characters' lives without seeming like it's dragging on too long?

[up] No I mean more along the lines of 'I think I'm legitimately depressed.'

Anyway finished S3, pretty great. [up] As for where they can take the characters, I imagine with Princess Caroline it'll be her need to fix problems and wheel and deal in order to feel fulfilled even though she has something else to make her happy, with Diane they might take a look at vapid internet pop feminism, since that kind of seems like what they're building up that blog to be which since this si a pretty liberal show could either end up cringey or brilliant, they might actually kill off Mr Peanutbutter's brother .

As for Bojack I think next season they'll have him legitimately start the uphill climb to actually trying to fix his flaws and be better. As in have his stuff focus on that and not him trying to be successful/ happy.

I'm really, REALLY hoping that Bojack gets his stuff together, if only for the sake of his long-lost daughter

On a lighter note, the payoff for the strainers was amazing. I wonder if Character Actress Margo Martindale is truly dead or not.

Either that or next season when it looks like Bojack's getting a bit more well adjusted he'll find out a person was offed to further his career and pretty much just try to kill himself.

You actually hear Anna talking to her on the phone on a later episode "Heather put in your article that Bojack was asleep when the nomination was revealed" and she sounds pretty peaceful. She probably just bought the tape back and destroyed it. The whole "I'll take care of it" thing was probably meant to make Anna look mysterious before the reveal that she's just as normal as the rest of us.

Finished season 3. I don't think it destroyed me as much as season 2. But I'm starting to wish other characters were the main stars, I'm getting tired of Bojack never learning.

Never trust anyone who uses "degenerate" as an insult.

Welcome to depression. sad

Bojack has been making incremental progress, changing for the better little by little in each season, though. He started making an effort in season 2. He started managing his expectations a little more in season 3. Sure, they both still ended up in very dark places, but that's because of where they start. The darkness doesn't go away just because you turn your back on it— but keep your eyes to the sun and you cannot see the shadow, as the woman says.

And it gets easier, as the monkey says. Every day, it gets a little easier. But you've gotta do it every day. That's the hard part.

I love this show.

[up]He is not going to do it every day. He is never going to do it every day, not as long as the show has a chance of getting renewed for another season.
