I feel the name of this trope is too unclear as most entries on the list are not linked to The Empire but just villains. This trope is clearly suffering Trope Namer Syndrome and does not have the Grandfather Clause to back it up.

Why not rename this trope Rooting For The Villains ? It gets the point across what this trope means.

Some people say I'm lazy. It's hard to disagree.

Declining to open.

The only reason given for a name change is "I personally think it's unclear." It has 586 wicks and has 1400+ inbound links. With that amount of use, strong evidence that the name is badly flawed is needed.

Also, Grandfather Clause doesn't require a specific age beyond "This was named before the current rule was made; we wouldn't name it that now." However, the page was made in 2008. The site has been around for ten years; this trope page has been in existence under this name for 6 of them. That's more than old enough to be covered by the Grandfather Clause regarding naming tropes with references to a particular work.

A rename is unlikely to happen, given that it has 586 wicks, 1000+ inbounds.

A split might be more feasible, though I personally don't think that it's a significant enough of a difference. The Empire is almost always ruled by the villains anyway, so it's really just a matter on whether or not the bad guy actually has his own kingdom or is just a renegade.
