Needs Help Reorganizing: Characters.Star Wars

After Disney's decision to overhaul the Star Wars Expanded Universe, I believe that it's important to split up the page on the characters introduced in the movies accordingly, as well as to make a number of other fixes. As such, I have created a new namespace for tropes specifically applying to Star Wars Legends versions of the characters: Star Wars Theatrical Legends.

Bear in mind that I've only just made the page and that I have yet to separate the non-canon tropes from the canon tropes, but that's where I need help. A list of canonical works in the new Star Wars Expanded Universe can be found here. Anything not on that list belongs in the Legends page. Similarly, tropes that just apply to the movies should not be included on the Legends page unless there is a Legends-specific example.

Other things that need to be worked on include:

  • Zero Context Examples, which either need to be hidden, removed, or given context to.
  • Moving YMMV and Trivia items to the pages that they belong to.
  • Listing movies by their titles instead of Episode #.
  • Removing all spoiler tags for spoilers relating to the first six movies, due to the It Was His Sled nature of the franchise (and because this seems to be the norm for many of the pages on here).

Do not move movie characters over to the new pages until they have been cleaned up first. Separating tropes between versions of the characters comes after the cleanup.

Help would be greatly appreciated.

Ah, here we go. As luck would have it, I've been working on reorganizing the pages with these very criteria. I've already mapped out the groundwork for where the characters should go, and I've even prepared brand new pictures for pretty much every single character that's currently on the list, and then some. Now it's just a matter of filling them up and removing out the unneeded bits. Here's a collection of sandboxes, in case anyone wants a go at it:

I see some of what I've written has made its way onto the actual pages. In the meantime, I'm continuing to edit my sandboxes. As you might be able to tell, I'm categorizing the characters based on the Star Wars Databank: that's why I put the Ewoks on the Rebels' page, the Republic-aligned planets and races on the Republic page, etc. I'm also hoping to rename the pages to match what my sandboxes are called. And since all of the main characters sans Darth Vader are affiliated with the Rebel Alliance, I think it'd be redundant to include their folders; just a mention of them in a header should cover it, I think.

There's also the issue of image space; given how some characters have very few tropes capable of being pulled from them in the movies alone, having images for these characters would probably clutter the page I've tried solving this by grouping some of the minor characters of a certain group who only get a scene or two worth of characterization into one folder (e.g., all the Imperial officers sans Tarkin and Piett). Any thoughts?

I like what your doing so far, and those suggestions sound good.

My one suggestion for improvement comes with the image sizes. 275 is a little small, IMO. Bumping them up to 300 would be an improvement, and some cropping on certain images would also help.

Take Luke's picture as an example. It gives us a closer look at him thanks to the slightly larger size and some more cropping. I've already got a little over 30 more images with the 300 size ready to upload, and I'm willing to do the rest if you don't want to / don't have the time.

I've tried doing it with 300px pictures, but there were some folders of grouped characters with so few tropes and so little text to go with them (like the Naboo and Trade Federation characters) that they ended up pushing each other down and out of place on my screen. I also want to maintain a consistent image size, or at least width. Squares probably won't cut it; a portrait arrangement may be better, like 250x350. Further experimentation may be needed.

And thanks for the offer on the pictures, but I think I can handle the rest of them. It'll definitely take some time (trust me, I know), and right now I have plenty of it. I'm open to reconsidering, though.

It does, doesn't it? Is there a process to moving it to that?

[up][up]Gotcha. Although I think there might be a solution to some of the smaller entries. I already posted it on the discussion page, but I'll post it again here:

I was thinking that since everything is supposed to be one coherent canon now, should there really be separate entries for characters here and then on (for example) the Clone Wars series? The Anakin, Yoda, Obi-Wan, Kit Fisto, Nute Gunray, Ackbar, Mon Mothma, Tarkin, etc. in that series are the exact same characters who are in the films and both are the same level of canon now. Does it really make sense to separate them? Shouldn't there be one overarching hub page for all characters in the new continuity, without multiple entries for characters? It would be relatively simple to merge them and just have the character tab for The Clone Wars, Rebels, etc. simply link to the character hub page for the franchise.

This would be very beneficial for characters like Mon Mothma, Tarpals, Lot Dod, etc. whose entries could be combined and could then fit larger images, and others like Plo Koon and Kit Fisto, who have an entries for TCW but not the films, and thus nothing about their deaths or actions in the films.

[up][up][up] Sounds like a thing. I'll get on that with the sandboxes if no one else has.

One other thing: does the "main" character page make much sense? It only has the main characters of the original trilogy, but not the main characters of the prequels. At least Yoda, Mace, and Padme are, IMO, main characters.

I don't know if they should be moved to that page, or if the main character page should be gotten rid of and the characters on it simply moved to the page where they fit best - Luke, Han, Leia, and the droids to the Rebel page, Obi-Wan to the Jedi, and Darth Vader to the Empire. I would prefer the second option, personally, since who is a main character could be pretty subjective.

EDIT: Started a sandbox page for the Republic Grand Army: Star Wars Galactic Republic Grand Army

[up] Well, when I think "Main" characters, I mean the longest standing, most iconic characters in the entire saga; that is, the main characters of A New Hope who have a profound impact on the prequel and/or sequel trilogy. That, and maybe it'd prevent some of the pages from getting too long. But now that we're merging things, I suppose there's not much else but to do what you suggest.

In addition, I think the Star Wars Databank should be used as a guideline for any characters to include on the pages, as well as any new pages in general. I've updated my first post to include your new sandbox, as well as some others I'll be working on.

BTW, is it cool for others to edit the sandboxs you've made? I'm not sure if there is some kind of troper etiquette for that.

[up] Knock yourselves out. The decision to group all of the TV show's tropes and characters has made it a challenge to sort the unsorted characters on my own anyway.

New sandbox page for Mandalorians: Star Wars Mandalorians.

EDIT: And another for Onderon: Star Wars Onderon.

EDIT 2: And Dathomir: Star Wars Dathomir.

EDIT 3: Star Wars Force Beings

EDIT 4: Star Wars Crew Of The Ghost

I made a page for the Clone Troopers and moved the non-clone personel to the Republic page.

EDIT: I'm also thinking of putting the Dathomirians and Onderonians and whatnot on the "Other" page, because I've been having some trouble trying to get that categorized.

That would make the Others page rather lengthy. I've already got sandboxes for them as separate groups.

EDIT: Nevermind, just noticed what you did with the Planets and Races page. I like that better, although I think the Dathomir and Mandalore entries are long enough for their own pages.

Yeah, let' keep the Dathomir (maybe change to "Dathomirians") and Mandalorian pages. And I guess we can relocate Darth Maul and Savage Oppress to the former like they were before and cut the Sith page entirely (I mean, over half the entries there are already on other pages).

OK, all Legends EU tropes are on the correct page now, and I am positive that all characters from the films, The Clone Wars, and Rebels are on the correct pages. If nobody has any objections, I'll start making the sandbox pages into the actual character pages soon.

You guys are cutlisting the sandbox pages when they are launched, yes?

I didn't know that was required. I'll put them on the cut list.

Ohm, you do know that the Jedi Order page you just launched is 466Ks long, and will have to be split? (Editing pages over 500ks crashes the server, so the rule is to split them upon reaching 400ks) If you agree, I'd create a Jedi Order: Main Heroes page, and move Qui-Gon, Obi-Wan, Anakin and Ahsoka there, since those entries are by far the longest. I'd also add a Luke and a Kanan folders linking to the Rebel Alliance and Ghost Crew pages respectively to the end of the page.

I am going to split off the Jedi Council to their own page. The issue with a "Main" Jedi page would be how one defines who is or isn't a main "Jedi". Would Yoda or Mace count? Should Qui-Gon, since he only has two canon appearances? etc.

Is there a place to see how long a page is?
