AKA the animated movie of 2014 that you most likely haven't heard of, which is a shame. It's being directed by the creator of El Tigre, Guillermo Del Toro is the executive producer and the visuals are not only gorgeous but the most unique I've seen in quite a while. Take a look.

You're right... I haven't heard of it. XD But it seems interesting. And I loves me some Guillermo del Toro.

I wish people wouldn't make adverts that go through the entire plot of the film. That said I'll definitely see this if I get a chance because the visuals are stunning.

Great that there's a trailer, though the basic premise seems suspiciously similar to Corpse Bride now that I think of it. XD Still wanna see it, though.

[up][up] To me, it looks more like a reimagining of the Orpheus myth.

[up] For me, it's just the idea of a man having to escape from a colorful Land of the Dead in order to reunite with the woman he loves...

Pretty much everything else seems original enough. XD

[up][up][up] I think it would have to involve her going to fetch him to count as Orpheus-based. And then messing it up somehow because no one in mythology can follow basic instructions.

[up] I think it's more along the lines of what would happen if the snake bit Orpheus instead.

I'm squeeing with excitement and having Ron Perlman as the villain just makes me have a rictus grin of happiness.

Here's Del Toro talking about it. The idea of the song covers gives me pause, but not that much. It can be done well. And yay, I wasn't crazy when I spotted the Orpheus thing!

Also, you guys should totally check out the website if you haven't already. They've put up several pieces of concept art and talk about where the inspiration for the designs came from.

Even Amid Amidi likes what he sees!

Also, in an interview, the director said he wanted the film to look exactly like the "Art of..." book.

It is definitely the most unique looking animated film I have seen in a long time. I saw one guy on Tumblr who thought the screenshots were from an independent short at first.[lol]

An animated film that looks as good as its own concept art. I like the sound of it, and they're awfully close.

Oh my

OH MY

MUST SEE

YES.

(Though I wonder if this means that the Pixar Day of the Dead film in the works will get canned because of this much like how Newt did after Rio & Alpha and Omega came out...)

Probably. But judging from the way Pixar seems to be going right now, I'd rather have this movie than theirs.

Sugar skulls and churros and del Torro and Ron Perlman and Sin-Eaters!

If nothing else the film looks gorgeous. It has everything needed to be great though, so hopes are high!

But that's a story for another time.
