The Book of Life

AKA the animated movie of 2014 that you most likely haven't heard of, which is a shame. It's being directed by the creator of El Tigre, Guillermo Del Toro is the executive producer and the visuals are not only gorgeous but the most unique I've seen in quite a while. Take a look.

I wish people wouldn't make adverts that go through the entire plot of the film. That said I'll definitely see this if I get a chance because the visuals are stunning.

Great that there's a trailer, though the basic premise seems suspiciously similar to Corpse Bride now that I think of it. XD Still wanna see it, though.

And how does the book tie into anything?

To me, it looks more like a reimagining of the Orpheus myth.

For me, it's just the idea of a man having to escape from a colorful Land of the Dead in order to reunite with the woman he loves...

Pretty much everything else seems original enough. XD

I think it would have to involve her going to fetch him to count as Orpheus-based. And then messing it up somehow because no one in mythology can follow basic instructions.

I think it's more along the lines of what would happen if the snake bit Orpheus instead.

Here's Del Toro talking about it. The idea of the song covers gives me pause, but not that much. It can be done well. And yay, I wasn't crazy when I spotted the Orpheus thing!

Also, you guys should totally check out the website if you haven't already. They've put up several pieces of concept art and talk about where the inspiration for the designs came from.

Also, in an interview, the director said he wanted the film to look exactly like the "Art of..." book.

It is definitely the most unique looking animated film I have seen in a long time. I saw one guy on Tumblr who thought the screenshots were from an independent short at first.

Probably. But judging from the way Pixar seems to be going right now, I'd rather have this movie than theirs.

If nothing else the film looks gorgeous. It has everything needed to be great though, so hopes are high!
