So if I were to assemble a council of divine beings who are in charge of ensuring order in the afterlife, which mythological figures should be on this council?

Thus far I can only name these figures.

  • Greek
    • Minos
    • Aeacus
    • Rhadamanthus
  • Egyptian
    • Osiris
  • Buddhist/Hindu
    • Yama

You could probably also add Odin (overseer of all nine realms and king of Asgard) or Hela (in charge of Nilfheim, the realm where the wicked and those who died peacefully go to) as representatives of norse mythology.

For bonus diversity points, you can add the angel Michael (who associated as "the good angel of death" in some Christian sects) for Christianity and Azrael (also an angel of death) for Islam.

From how broad a group of cultures do you want these to come? I suspect that it could become a rather large list if you include enough cultures...

That said, this (rather incomplete, I think) Wikipedia article might be a useful source for research.

[edit] I also turned up !Xu, a San deity, and you might find more deities here and here.

Egyptian mythology would also include Ma'at, and maybe Anubis.

Islamic text are in Arabic, so the angel's name should end in il. Sure you're not confused with Sikh?

Anyway, Osiris regulates an after life that takes the old bodies and souls of the living. Thanatos (the Greek god of Death) simply takes your soul to Hades and Yama recycles you, spiritually and physically and sends you back for another round till the end of the world as we know it. These afterlives are incompatible.

That's why he wants you to have the money. Not so you can buy 14 Cadillacs but so you can help build up the wastes

His original name is Isra'il or Azra'eil. Azrael is the romantization of his name in english.

He is apparently the entity of death in both islam and sikh.
