I suspect that a fair bit could be done with Baba Yaga; perhaps make her the central character in a series of disconnected stories, each having its own protagonist with their own reason for visiting (or stumbling upon) Baba Yaga. There's always a price to pay—by someone—and Baba Yaga's motivations may not always be what they seem. On at least some occasions someone ends up in the cook-pot.
My Games & WritingNot really a folktale, but I'd like to see a TV version of Njals saga. Oh the drama. Especially with the whole "Hallgerd refuses to give Gunnar a lock of hair for his bowstring."

The road goes ever on. -Tolkien
Yeah, Baba Yaga would be a pretty good folktale to turn into a TV series, especially if they are going for the horror angle of this folktale for the TV series.
I love animation, TV, movies, YOU NAME IT!Would anyone else like to see a TV series based on an Icelandic saga? And I mean one actually based on it, not like Vikings.

The road goes ever on. -TolkienOh, yes. Murderage! Violencification! Historical veracity!
Our folklore is a little short on recurring characters, unfortunately.
'All he needs is for somebody to throw handgrenades at him for the rest of his life...'Perhaps a series featuring a Huldra as the viewpoint character, telling various stories (some of which may be connected to each other) about people who find themselves deep in the forest—whether lost, fleeing, exploring, searching or otherwise.
My Games & WritingHow about 1,001 Nights? There should be enough material.
1,001 Night unexpurgated could be more risque than Game of Thrones. The interlocking story within a story would great, and it has such perfect cliffhangers. I wish I could throw money at it now.

@Inverurie: What about Arthurian legend? Maybe not, that's been done loads of times.
@Rhea: Who would play Shahrazad though?
And since I'm studying "Hamlet" for a uni preparation course right now, how about an adaptation of the original Danish story of Amleth?

The road goes ever on. -TolkienOooh! I would like to see a TV series on 1,001 Nights also!
I love animation, TV, movies, YOU NAME IT!You asked me, but I haven't the slightest idea. I can name like 3 actors who aren't C-Drama stars, I'm posting in the literature forum for reasons.
Edit- Adaptions exist. There is the 206 episode Alif Laila (no translation...?) with Damini Kanwal as Scheherazade, and a two episode miniseries titled Arabian Nights with Mili Avital as Scheherazade.

That's not our folklore, though. That's from the next country along.
'All he needs is for somebody to throw handgrenades at him for the rest of his life...'I haven't heard of these other folktales before. It would be great to see these get their TV series!
I love animation, TV, movies, YOU NAME IT!I'd love to a see a Sinbad series that plays him the way he was in the actual stories, as his odd Guile Hero mix of Unlucky Everydude and Mr. Vice Guy. Everyone seems to prefer to write him as if he were Robin Hood, or (occasionally) as an outright pirate.

"The difference between reality and fiction is that fiction has to make sense." - Tom Clancy, paraphrasing Mark Twain. What about Havelock The Dane?
The road goes ever on. -TolkienI think The Goose Girl has potential. Not as a very long series, but I can see it being epic across twelve thirty-minute episodes. Gotta make the treacherous serving-girl a bit cannier, though.
Hail Martin Septim!Personally, I've wanted to see Romeo and Juliet as a TV Series. But, not some Teen Drama series or something from The CW, but with the quality of stuff like GOT or Penny Dreadful. And it could take the time the play doesn't to present the stories' conflict from different angles.
I was in a production of R+J where EVERYONE wrote out an entire backstory for their characters; Balthazar, Abram, Sampson, Friar John, EVERYONE. And we ended up having massive discussions on who had what relations to what characters, what the damn feud between the families was, and all of this other stuff.
We also had the show set in 1915 India with Montagues being British Colonials and the Capulets were of India's people.
It was a very beautiful production.
I'm a critical person but I'm a nice guy when you get to know me. Now, I should be writing.I also would like to see The Goose Girl get its own TV series also! I really loved Shannon Hale's take on the classic tale and I would like to see that adapted to a TV series!
I love animation, TV, movies, YOU NAME IT!I think Bearskin could make for an interesting adaptation- classic story of a Deal with the Devil and attempting to get out of it while Walking the Earth and doing good in the process.
Probably need to tone down/modernize the idea of not bathing or even blowing one's nose though.

Edit, edit, edit, edit the wikiOne of the original versions of Little Daughter of the Snow. The one where she was given to an elderly pair by the God of Frost.
My angry rant blog! The Tale of the Heike. A fictionalized portrayal of the wars between the Minamoto and the Taira (/spit clans) and the rise of the first real Shogun.
Mainly due to the characters, machinations, plottings and betrayals. Think the Sforza, the Medici and the Borgias were sneaky bastards? Well, neighbours, you ain't seen nuthin' yet.
You might as well throw in a portrayal of the Japanese Warring States period and the Bakumatsu while your at it. Or how about the story of Alexander The Great and how everybody and their mama had their own plan to seize his empire after his death.
I can see something like "the dragon with seven heads" or "the turkey hen" being pretty good. or...oooh, I'd love to see an extended version of " The Great Narbone"

What folktales do you want to see turn into a TV series?
I personally would like to see a TV series done on The Fool of the World and the Flying Ship. I think that there would be enough stories to tell with so many characters involved (story lines involving the Fool, the Princess, the Tsar and the Runner). I also would like to see a TV series on East of the Sun West of the Moon, either it deals with the main heroine's time after she's married to the prince or before she's married to the prince.
