I'm surprised Noob Bridge doesn't actually show the actual Noob Bridge from Super Metroid. I'm not sure if that is for a reason or what. This Miiverse post I think this pretty much sums up what the trope is like. I'm not sure if pics like these are okay to use. If nessesary we can block out the name. If it's not okay, then I guess we could use this pic without the Miiverse, though I don't feel like it conveys the trope as much as the former.

If any of you have your own suggestion, please share it.

Honestly, I don't think either suggestion gets enough of the trope across.

It's hard to tell what it is without context. IT would be Just a Face and a Caption. I have to say no to the suggestion.

Well do you have anything else in mind? If the actual noob bridge that the trope is referencing can't get the trope across, then what can?

Lots of things, I'm sure. A picture of the bridge doesn't mean anything to people who aren't familiar with the source material, and that is what we are looking for.

The thread can't make progress unless someone suggests something. If you guys think that my suggestion isn't good, then find something better so that this thread isn't just people saying, "your suggestion sucks".

I can't think of anything. All I know is that the suggestion isn't suitable. Someone may find something while this thread is up.

[down] We really don't want a picture of somebody's post with the image embedded in it. That is essentially a caption, but uglier.

I would have thought the person saying "I'm stuck" would have provided some sort of context.

"...find something better..."

I suggest nothing. Not having a page image is the best suggestion so far.

I'm good with showing the Trope Namer here. An action shot from a platforming sequence is clearly not "just a face and a caption".

I think using both pics would solve the problem.

The Miiverse image demonstrates how people commonly get stuck, and the second pic shows the simple solution that veterans know about already.

Sorry rodney Anonymous, but quite frankly, that sounds like an excuse not to try. So no. This trope is on the list of tropes needing an image, that's what this thread is for. At least give it a week before completely rejecting the trope.

Tropes Needing Images is simply a list of trope pages that don't currently have an image and haven't already been declared "unpicturable". A trope being on that list doesn't mean that we must find a picture for it. And making an IP thread doesn't mean that an image must be chosen.

Now, since a good page image is an example of the trope, and more importantly, illustrates the trope without requiring that the reader be familiar with the work, let's start with the basic question: How do we illustrate "a point in a game that a new player won't be able to pass without a specific bit of skill that they haven't needed to use up to that point" without making the caption do all the explaining?

Just a screencap of such a point won't work — unless you've played that particular game often enough to recognize it, the caption is doing all the work.

I don't think it really addresses the concerns raised, but what came to my mind was y cant metroid crawl.

The screenshot in that one at least vaguely hints that there's something you should be able to do that the player doesn't know about (but it could just as easily be that he's taken a wrong turn somewhere and is in a legitimate dead end.) At least that's what I get looking at it, never having played the game. The ones suggested in the OP don't have even that much of a vague hint — it's just a bridge, with nothing to indicate that crossing it is going to be a problem.

Thank you Madrugada. The trope specifically refers to the noob bridge in Super Metroid, so I thought actually showing the noob bridge itself in a picture would be able to get people to recognize what the infamous bridge actually looks like. I've seen plenty of Just A Face And A Caption pics in other articles that managed to pass just fine, such as That One Level for The Legend of Zelda. All it shows is a picture of the entrance to the Water Temple, it doesn't necessarily show how difficult it is. I'm not sure if there is something I'm not seeing with that one, but it feels like there are some inconsistencies here. However, I really don't want the article to be unpictureable (if that's even a word), because the page images are probably my favorite part of reading TV Tropes. I wish there was some sort of leeway when picking images. I really don't want this to be a lost cause.

In my opinion, having some sort of picture that sorta, kinda, not necessarily 100% describes the trope is better than having no image at all, but that's just me.

@Spark: Actually it kind of is. The litmus test for JAFAAC is "Would someone with no prior knowledge of the work understand the picture", and in this case, anybody not familiar with Super Metroid would have no clue what the trope is from that picture.
