This trope has been around since at least 2011. It was renamed a while back from "Family Feud", since it was getting in the way of the game show of the same name, and literally all inbounds at the time were in relation to the game show.

This page still has only five examples, the exact number it had back in 2011 before the rename. It's gotten a couple more inbound links, but still hasn't changed one iota since 2011. And That's Terrible.

To me, the distinction between it and Feuding Families is too subtle; it seems Family Rivalry is just a Lighter and Softer The Same but More of Feuding Families.

I think this has been in TRS before, but failed to reach consensus.

Not to mention that the name isn't particularly clear with regards to its definition. Since we have a Sibling Rivalry trope, I'd have assumed this to be a rivalry between family members in general, rather than what it's currently describing.

That said, this trope does appear to be a downplayed version of Feuding Families, and should probably be either cut or merged into the latter.

Rebump. Why does this keep getting lost in the shuffle? This trope has had zero gain since 2011 and is a total no brainer for a merge, but no one's saying anything!

Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence
"Two rivals' children compete against each other in the same competition the rivals had competed in. One of the kids is a major character, whose parent lost in that competition (and this fact will be told for exposition purposes at the start of the story)."

Looks to me like it have very few examples because it is very, very specific.

I do not think this is really too similar to Feuding Families, because that involves a large portion of each family fighting each other, like actually fighting each other not competing against each other, probably for a long time. Family Rivalry is about children competing in an event that their parents also competed in (plus a bunch of other specifics that do not seem very necessary to me). I vote we expand the definition a bit and pimp it for more entries, or else shift the focus to maybe be something like 'kids competing against each other and their parents take it really seriously because of a perceived rivalry with each other', or something like that.

[up]The first line of the description is overly specific. The second line pretty much defines this as the G-rated version of Feuding Families. I suppose there might be a salvageable trope somewhere (e.g. "Rival parents that try to one-up each other using their children's achievements rather than their own"), but both its name and description is poor that I think we're better off cutting this one and start a new YKTTW from the basic idea.

As it stands the usage stat is: 4 examples, 10 wicks, 4 inbounds. Nothing that will be missed, really.

6 votes for a merge, a tentative no-merge in @9.

Personally, I feel that Family Rivalry is too narrow.

I'd vote to merge. It seems like nothing of serious value would be lost if we did so.

I recommend to merge Family Rivalry —> Feuding Families, given the disparity in wicks.
