Neil Young launched his project Pono that consists of a music player PonoPlayer and digital music service PonoMusic. The PonoPlayer will be sold for $399 whereas its "high-resolution" digital albums will likely cost between $14.99-$24.99 apiece.

Details about Pono:

  • Its audio file format is in FLAC.
  • 128 GB
  • 192 kHz, 24-bit
  • store from 1,000-2,000 high-resolution digital albums

Neil raised the $800,000 he needed for Pono in less than 10 hours via a Kickstarter campaign.

What do all of you think?

I don't see this unseating the iTunes music store (or even becoming the runner-up, really) but I applaud Neil Young's decision to use FLAC. Maybe this can become the Bandcamp for major label artists.
