Does anybody really like the first season of The Simpsons?

I absolutely do.

Sometimes I feel that the season gets the Red-Haired Stepchild treatment because of Early-Installment Weirdness, even amongst the creators. You have to realize that what they were attempting was something that had never been done, and they weren't just going to emulate what Hanna-Barbara had done 15-20 years prior.

There are a lot of animation flaws, story issues, and leisurely pacing, but I enjoy the season for what it was. And it wasn't as if they stuck around the mistakes for long, because they figured out their flaws early on. The original version of "Some Enchanted Evening" (well, the parts they let the fans see) is horrible, and much of "Bart the Genius" is pretty rough, but I like watching those episodes over and over again.

I actually adored the looser, more surreal animation and style of the first season. There were some clear bumps here and there, though not really anymore than what later seasons would offer.

I do like the first season,it's just that it was still hitting it's stride and everything good in the first season was also in the 2nd.

That said I absolutely love the final round of episodes such "The Crepes of Wrath" and where Sideshow Bob frames Krusty. Also the war against Nelson (though I don't hate his new characterization as an Anti-Hero)

I love it,but just about every season until the 10th were just funnier.

The humor was just a little too subtle.

Does the first season have that one episode where Bart gets in trouble and everyone wants to kill him by the end or something and I think the whole episode is told as a flashback or something like that? If so, I've seen a single first season episode of the show.

It's the episode where Bart chops off the head of the Jeremiah Springfield statue, right? Or am i missing the boat on that?

Odd you couldn't get the episode name. It's one of about three that actually show it on screen ("The Telltale Head" by the way).

It's been years since I've seen it, and I think I missed the first minute or so, so no, I didn't know the episode name. I'm not a regular Simpsons watcher. Thank you, though.

[up]Yeah, that's the one.

I wished that they had the alternate endings on the DVD, including the syndication one where they have the church music.

I admit I thought the extended ending worked better than the original (first they wanna tear Bart limb from limb, now a second later they..don't). Before I realized the background of it, I thought I'd been jipped with a DVD of truncated footage.
