I can't help but look at Somewhere, a Paleontologist Is Crying and all of the other 'Somewhere an X is crying' tropes and think that, the way they are named and described, they look like a last redoubt of 'You Fail X Forever', which we agreed to rename and rework into 'Artistic License - X'.

Am I the only one who feels like this, or do people agree with me? In such a case, we probably should get to reworking all these to be more concordant with Artistic License than with You Fail X Forever.

It has been mentioned before in other threads but I don't know what the general consensus is on the "Somewhere a(n) X Is Crying" snowclone archipelago.

They were supposed to be part of that move. The push to actually do the work ran out of steam before all the pages were fixed.

I am tepidly in favour of a move.

Well, if nobody is posting anymore, I guess we have agreed on what has to be agreed, right? Not sure if there is anything else to discuss about this topic now.

Doesn't these kind of thing usually need more consensus? Anyway, I'd give a [tup] for the move just in case

^ It was discussed and agreed on long ago, but the work was never finished. We don't need to re-establish a consensus, we need to make the changes.

  1. Rewrite the description to be less judgmental and snide.
  2. rewrite any examples on the page that are snide or snippy.
  3. Clear out non-examples and clearly mark examples that are also Science Marches On
  4. Change the name to Artistic License – Paleontology
  5. Make the current name a redirect.
  6. Change all the wicks to the new name. (including moving them to the correct alphabetical position.)

How do we fix it? I've never officially fixed anything before. But for the description, it does sound a bit pretentious and know-it-all-like. Pardon, but I'd like to take a stab at it:

Dinosaurs are pretty cool, which is why they are frequently seen in fiction. However, creators do not always prioritize historical or scientific accuracy when dealing with these prehistoric creatures in works. As such, dinosaurs often appear in the wrong time period, along with humans, possess special abilities that they otherwise would never have had, or are treated as pets or friendly characters.

In Real Life many of the most commonly-recognized dinosaurs lived in different habitats, continents or time periods. Some prehistoric creatures, like pterosaurs and plesiosaurs, are technically not even considered to be dinosaurs. Fortunately, some educational programs attempt to avoid these pitfalls.

See Everything's Better with Dinosaurs, Slurpasaur, Raptor Attack, and Ptero Soarer.

Compare Dinosaurs, Stock Dinosaurs (True Dinosaurs), Stock Dinosaurs (Non-Dinosaurs) and Prehistoric Life.

[up]Is that the new text you want to use instead? That's good.

That's an excellent rewrite. Clear, concise, neutral/non-judgemental in tone.

Lovely. Swap it in and leave a link to this discussion in the edit reason.

The new description is up. Yay!

So how do we change the title? It's a real problem.

edited 11th Apr '14 7:26:25 AM by Lakija

It is what it is.
Do we really need to change the title to a duller one?
Could we just... not have Death anymore?
To overturn a previous decision would require a vote of 2/3rds, minimum of 15 votes.

I like the current title but if someone's got something snappier in mind I'm all ears.

The "is crying" snowclones were included in the "you failX..." clean-up and move because the name invites judgmental writing about how bad and blatant the errors are. Both the "is crying" cluster and the "You fail X" cluster were to be moved to "Artistic License"

Artistic License - Dinosaurs would be easy, clean, and other stuff. So that's what I'd like, at least as a redirect if nothing else. No need to change the whole thing of course if that's too rash.

The trope is not just about dinosaurs, though. I favour Artistic License Prehistoric Life.

[up] Either or is fine with me. As long as no one is crying somewhere. Least of all Palaentologist... I'm not even gonna pretend I spelled that right. And I'm too lazy to right click it and spell it right. -__-

That sounds more like it covers the field of paleontology rather than prehistoric life.

[up]Fair enough. Just as long as it doesn't have "dinosaur" in the title.

Alternative Titles: Somewhere A Palaeontologist Is Crying

Vote up names you like, vote down names you don't. Whether or not the title will actually be changed is determined with a different kind of crowner (the Single Proposition crowner). This one just collects and ranks alternative titles.
