Well, more like... the kind of things Livius and Nike were doing felt like they would have had more impact after a longer period of Nike finding him standoffish and unlikeable, and after a longer period of us being shown that. As it is, we have about eight minutes of being told that Livius is uncaring and dry before he starts giving Nike access to the gardens and having pool shenanigans and so on.

It's been fun.

Well, as I said (or implied), that is going through the motions. Much like a first date can be.

I still love Nike so much. Her personality is totally hooking me into this show, so I hope they don't ruin it later on.

@Duck: Yes, but the characters going through the motions is much different from the show itself going through the motions.

I mean, I still have hope that the show can get back to where it was in the first episode, so I will keep watching at least for another episode.

It's been fun.

I think it should have picked a direction with Livius and stuck with it. The thing is, he alternates between being a spoiled brat and a cool, calculating world ruler. The problem is the two parts arn't integrated at all, and we arn't shown how they go together at all so he just feels all over the place and neither aspect is that believable.

Its like he's just there to be an antagonist of sorts for Nike. And the whole thing with the mother...meh.

I'm still holding out hope that he'll have an interesting characher like Nike.

I don't think those two sides of him conflict. It's sort of like how people behave differently among different people. Like a professional and a personal persona. A clash, sure, but not a conflict. But I do agree that there's room for improvement in characterisation.

Rather than a kid who just happened to be a king, I think it's a little better to think Livius as a king who also happens to be a lonely kid, and the latter side he can't afford to show to anyone as it's something his enemies can and WILL exploit.

That said, don't expect him to miraculously become a nice guy now that Nike is around.

@Duck: Well, that's what I mean. I don't yet feel that Livius is acting differently among different people because they bring out different facets of his personality, I feel like he acts that way because the author needs him to act the ways he does in the scenes he does. It feels artificial.

It's been fun.

Characters are supposed to be artificial. What's your real point?

Same as usual.... Wing it.

I think she's having issues reconciling Livius as the responsible and capable Sun King, to Livi the entitled and bratty kid. And later on, he adds jealous and possessive on top of this. XD

The manga was just as bad as the anime at this — see those rapid scene transitions? Those were all over the place in the first volume.

@Culminus: No, characters are artificial creatures that are supposed to feel like real people. My thought shouldn't be 'Livius is acting this way in this scene because the author wants a funny scene here', it should be 'Livius is acting this way because he's starting to open up to Nike and doesn't want to admit it'. It's about the characters acting and reacting like real people. (I don't have any issue with Livius acting differently around different people, but the characters' motivations and feelings should be clearly what're driving them.)

The main think with Nike is that she's challeging him in a way no one else has, and at the same time, he needs her on his side, so he doesn't really know how to act to make that happen. Which, from personal experience, can get someone to act very differently for no apparent reason.

[up] In that case, the logical thing to do would be to just stick her in a room, give her a gold card and say "Sorry this had to happen to you, but my people need the rain. So do your thing everyone once in a while and enjoy being queen and I won't bother you. "

The thing is, he just randomly flips between being possessive, standoffish, and being nice with no rhyme or reason to it. If he picked one an gradually opened up, it would work.

I know, he's really the Tsun king! [lol] (although he's actually more random than most of them)

That would be the logical thing to do if he understood how her powers worked, and if he thought he could actually get away with it. Considering the way she explained it, he wouldn't, and it would be a bad idea to risk it, since that was the entire purpose of getting her there in the first place.

I'd argue about the random bit, though, but I don't want to watch it again and analyse it.

Man the king is like a Lil' Lelouch.

This show is really sweet though, I'm really liking it.

Oh Jesus Christ, he really is lil' Lelouch.

Can spunky princess redhead tame little Lelouch? I don't know but it's sooooooo cute to watch.

Episode 2: Major letdown after the stellar first episode. There were some good bits, mostly because of Nike being an awesome gal, but there was a lot of going through the motions and the rain song really ought to have sounded more... mystical, or majestic. I might have to check out the manga.

I think the first ep was better than this because there were no signs of any cliche shoujo elements whatsoever. Nike didn't meet the king yet. So she was able to be her own and drive the episode.

I dunno, there being more conflict in episode 2 helped keep me more invested, the Romanticism vs. Pragmatism angle.

Episode 3. In which there's tsun and dere.

I like how excited she is over asking him what he thought.

He's such a dick. Rain is wonderful.

You do not pull a someone's hair like that.

I normally wouldn't approve of hitting someone in that way for a comment like that, but then again, he is a Royal Brat.

I think the "I refuse" scene in Maoyuu Maou Yuusha was better.

That's probably the best "take responsibility" scene I've seen in anime. I usually loathe that line.

If there's one thing she knows, it's how to make an entrance.

Out of curiosity, were/are we ever told Nike's age? I'm curious just what size the age gap between her and Livius is...

Despite being an anime-only addition, the council of Elders Livi meets always crack me up with their "suggestions".

Excellent adaptation of the chapter by the way, though the overuse of that particular insert song is always a concern. wink

That On the Next...they're just saying whatever while random scenes from the next episode play, right?
