This is just something I'd like to bring up so I can get some more viewpoints on the subject.

We all make mistakes, be it intentionally or unintentionally. Obviously, unless you're a sociopath, we will indeed feel bad about what happened. The question is, when should we feel guilt, and when should we feel regret? Is there even a difference between the two?

For me, guilt is only needed when you have intentionally harmed someone knowing that it would do just that. However, I feel that one shouldn't feel guilt if they accidentally caused a mistake to happen. In that case, one should regret that they made the mistake, but simply move on and learn from it. Not saying that you should ignore it completely, but simply acknowledge it as a mistake, and learn to do better next time.

Guilt, imo, leads to self-loathing, while regret allows one to move on. I'd like to know what you guys think.

[up] Well for starters, only one can change the nature of a man. tongue

More seriously, I would say that guilt is a subset of regret. Guilt is something you should feel when something is your fault, that you are a direct cause for. You can feel regret for more than that, whether you could have done something to prevent it or not.
