Well er, damn, gonna be hard to decide...

Winter 2013 - Maoyuu, mostly because I love Maoyuu and I don't remember much else. Kotoura's first two episodes were perfect as well but after that it went down slightly. Still loved it, but it did went down. Otherwise I don't remember too much of Winter 2013 because back then I was still using stream sites. Only Spring did I convert to torrenting or XDCC.

Spring 2013 - Lovely little season, Oregairu on top with Hataraku Maou-sama closeby. Valvrave ties with Hata Maou as well because goddamn was it fun. Shingeki has the best first episode I've seen in a long while, but otherwise is meh.

Summer 2013 - Personally my favorite season of the year anime-wise. C3-bu and Love Lab ties as my favorite because both were really, really goddamn fun, amazing. Gatcha Crowds deserves a mention but that ending kinda pulled it down. And Monogatari S2, pretty good stuff.

Fall 2013 - I am ashamed to admit it, but Fall is overall better than Summer, with a boatload of great shows. Currently my favorites that aren't continuations are either Nagi no Asukara, Outbreak Company, or strangely enough, Ace of Diamond. Samumenco was the top of the list for a while, but then Guilotine Gorilla and now it's lower. Honorable mention to Log Horizon which I also immensely enjoyed, Yowamushi Pedal that started off great but the pacing's killing me slowly, and both Valvrave S2 and second half of Monogatari S2 were even better than the first half of each.

Overall...It's a hard decision between Oregairu, Valvrave(Both seasons), Love Lab, and C3-bu. Genuinely enjoyed them all, can't and don't really wanna decide, so I guess.

The preamble: in review, this year started off pretty weakly.

Winter 2013, nothing amazing there. A couple of strong opening episodes, which were let down by the rest of the series.

Spring 2013 was the most interesting of the year. There was a bunch of shows I consider good, as well as a lot of other shows I could fall back to watching if I had nothing else to do.

Summer 2013 had less to watch, but the few things I did watch I felt I could really connect with.

Fall 2013 is perfectly watchable, but I don't know that there's anything airing I would consider high-tier.

With that out of the way, it's time to give awards out like candy.

  • Best wasted potential: Hentai Ouji To Warawanai Neko.
    • There was a very flexible setting which didn't fall afoul of typical manga writing traps and which held my attention, there were allusions and subtext and there was mystery that wasn't boring, and the girls were weapons-grade cute (if you're going to pander at least do it right). This was let down by terrible execution which I could probably half blame on DEEN.

  • Best Narrator: Yahari Ore No Seishun Love Come Wa Machigatteiru, Hikigaya Hachiman.
    • Flawed, cynical, self aware yet not too capable there was a sense Hachiman knew what he was talking about while the next step on the road to development was denied him by this same cynicism. But listening to him was almost always funny.

  • Best Continuity porn: Fate Kaleid Liner Prisma Illya's Illya vs Saber fight.
    • Illya (technically an Emiya) fights Saber as the Archer in an alternate universe. I think either you know what I'm talking about or you don't care.

  • The "This is all too familiar to me" Award. Servant × Service
    • What can I say, I worked in a quirky office.

  • The "Don't Ever Do This Again" award Aku No Potato.
    • I was expecting an anime and even then I'd rather they aired the original footage.

  • AI Companion Of The Year. Suisei no Gargantia's Sugitabot.
    • I'm a sucker for loyal robots with implied depth.

  • Headdesk Award (watching this cost me brain cells) Kakumeiki Valvrave
    • No.

  • Best Retelling: A Certain Scientific Railgun.
    • Accelerator fight animated. It's better than the manga which was better than the Index version.

  • Best (Pseudo?) Political/Sociological subtext: Gatchaman Crowds
    • I would totally leave Hajime in charge of restructuring the world. Perhaps not unsupervised.

  • Unexpectedly Fresh: Log Horizon
    • I would probably recommend this before Dot Hack and definitely before that other thing for people seeking MMO anime.

  • Best Series Viewpoint Shift: Monogatari Series Second Season.
    • Let me just say that I find the current narrator hilarious and his misadventures ever so appropriately wrong, true to the series.

I'm giving my anime of the year to Ore No Imouto Ga Konna Ni Kawaii Wake Ga Nai for three reasons I feel strongly about:

  • The character writing, which enhances such moments as the party where all the characters are together and, well, this.
  • Being an excellent example to the harem genre at the points where it can even be sad to be "harem". The slow build to the romance, girls who you can like on their own merits, shifting character dynamics and people actually getting turned down and moving on while the plot also moves on.
  • The ending and how intense the build up was. Again, either you get this or you don't but at the very least it created some strong reactions.

I watched a lot more than that, and more shows deserve a mention, but I'll have to leave that up to everyone else.

Based on responses so far, I think Yahari Ore No Seishun Love Come Wa Machigatteiru deserves more love since it's probably a close second to oreimo in my list, also having an excellent blend of strong characters and comedy.

Since that everyone broadened up the list, I think I should do so as well.

Most hilarious anime: Senyuu.

  • This anime marks the first time I actually laughed when I watch anime.

Best mecha anime: Ginga Kikoutai Majestic Prince

  • Good balance of humor and seriousness, very well done battle choreography and likeable characters.

Best idol anime: Aikatsu!

  • Mature writing, relaxing but informative plot, likeable characters and lots of good songs.

Best mechanical toy anime: Danball Senki Wars

  • Mature writing that is much deeper than most mecha anime, good battle choreography and engaging plot.

Most surprisingly good anime: Yowamushi Pedal

  • I thought this is you typical hot blooded sports shonen, but I ended up wrong. It's quite low key and the sport scenes are in proper intensity.

Best overall quality: Suisei no Gargantia

  • Nothing to say much about this.

Best character design: Super Seisyun Brothers

  • Even the male characters somehow become cute with that kind of design. They make the already adorable plot even more adorable.

Special Mention: Gifuu Doudou!: Kanetsugu to Keiji

  • It is a very good show once you look past the questionable character designs, with those political and strategic machinations plus powerful OST.

Overall, this year is quite weak at the beginning, but does become stronger towards the end.

Winter: Didn't really watch much this season, so I have to go with Kotoura-san out of default. I heard the Zettai Karen Children spin-off was good, but it's been sitting on my "To Watch" list for a while now.

Spring: Attack On Titan with Hataraku Maou-sama as a close second.

Summer: Uchouten Kazoku, a show that I decided to watch at the last minute and ended up absolutely loving. Also enjoyed Free and Silver Spoon.

Fall: My favorite season this year (usually it's spring). Kill La Kill just because of how off the walls insane it is. Kyousogiga is also very good, and I've been loving the Little Busters Refrain adaptation.

Best Anime Adaptation: JoJos Bizarre Adventure, hands fucking down. I know it technically started its run time in late 2012, but fuck you.

Best Expansion of the Source Material: Railgun S, and anyone who didn't expect to see this show on my list in some way clearly doesn't know me very well. In particular, the Sisters arc was incredibly well-fleshed out and executed, outperforming the main continuity and even the manga for how well it captured the sheer horror and emotional duress Mikoto felt during Project Radio Noise. Also, bonus points for having Mugino and friends show up because ITEM are best girls.

Best Show About Economics: Sorry Maouyuu, I love you and I consider you something akin to an unpolished gem, but your creator's other work, Log Horizon, takes this one. Perhaps it's how the transition from a medieval to a modern setting makes things more relatable to a postmodern audience, or it might just be that it wove together its economics and its character development so nicely (don't get me wrong, Maouyuu passed with flying colors in both those categories, but the two tended to stay somewhat separate at times), but Log Horizon captured my attention unceasingly from the first episode onwards.

Best Cast: Hataraku Maou-sama! takes the cake on this one for giving me a main character I can really learn to love and cling to. I don't think there was a single character in this show I hated, and they all bounced off of each other so nicely that watching each episode was a treat. I still haven't watched episode 13 because I don't want to admit it's over ;_;

Best "For Fun" Show: This award goes to a show that always made me smile whenever I watched it, just because of how balls-deep weird and just plain fun it was. Mondaiji-tachi ga isekai kara kuru soudesuyo?, you're the show that will always make me smile whenever I watch it. Your sheer energy and capacity for unfiltered fun above all else endeared you to me from the word go. You weren't serious, you weren't deep, and that's the way you liked it. You were a show that dedicated itself 100% to having fun.

Best Series That I Haven't Finished Watching Yet And I Don't Know Why: Yeah, Fate Kaleid Liner Prisma Ilya. As a TYPE-Lunatic, I'm ashamed to say it but I never got around to finishing this anime. I've been meaning to, but the stars just haven't aligned.

Best Pandering: Kyoukai no Kanata. No one ever said Kyo Ani weren't good at what they do, you sick memeloving fucks. Hope you enjoy your cancerous moeshit, and may you choke on it.

Best Opening Theme Song: DATABASE DATABASE JUST LIVING IN THE DATABASE WHOAOH

Best Ending Theme Song: Mondaiji again, just because the Dancing Theme is Haruhi-tier excellent and the chibis of the main cast are adorable.

Best Fanservice: Now I'm gonna surprise all y'all and actually use fanservice the way the term was intended to be used: service to the fans. Not T&A exclusively, but just giving the fans what they want with no strings attached. And while it's not going to trump the games in terms of sheer quality anytime soon, BlazBlue Alter Memory finally gave fans what they've been wanting for the longest time. A chance to see all their favorite characters punching each other in glorious full animation.

BEST EVERYTHING AWARD: KILL LA MOTHERFUCKING KILL. THANK THE BASED LORD TRIGGER BECAUSE ANIME IS SAVED, HALLELUJAH AND PASS ME THE TYLENOL. YOU WIN EVERYTHING, KILL LA KILL. YOU WIN EVERYTHING FOREVER. ALL THE AWARDS. GOD BLESS AND GOD SPEED YOU MAGNIFICENT BASTARD.

Here are my picks.

Winter:

It's a three way tie between Kotoura-sannote , Problem Childrennote , and Vividred Operationnote .

Honorable mentions: Maoyuu, GJ-bu, Tamako Market and The Unlimited Hyoubu Kyousuke.

Spring:

Hataraku Maou-samanote , Oregairunote , and Attack on Titannote . Another three-way tie!

Honorable mentions: Date A Live, Hyakka Ryouran: Samurai Bride, Red Data Girl, Valvrave, Suisei no Gargantia, and Zettai Bouei Leviathan.

Summer:

Kiniro Mosaicnote , Fate/kaleid liner PRISMA☆ILLYAnote , Servant x Servicenote , and Watamotenote . Now it's a four way tie!

Honorable mentions: The other shows I watched are honorable-worthy! But here's what stand out. Free!, High-School DxD New, Silver Spoon, C3-bu, and Kitakubu Katsudou Kiroku.

Fall:

Kill La Killnote , Strike the Bloodnote , Kyoukai no Kanatanote , and Non Non Biyorinote .

Honorable mentions: Yuu-sibu, Unbreakable Machine Doll, Magi 2, Little Busters:Refrain, Infinite Stratos 2 Log Horizon, Gundam Build Fighters, Samurai Flamenco, and Gingitsune. Like Summer, all the shows I'm watching are honorable-worthy, but these stand out.

Most Favorite Short Episode Anime: This one's tough. All the shorts I watched were good in their own way. But the winners are Mangirl and Miss Monochrome. Oh, and Muromi-san as well.

Winter: I'm going to say the second half of Jojos Bizarre Adventure since nothing that I've actually finished that started during the winter season was really that good.

Spring: A Certain Scientific Railgun S. I didn't really think much of the Accelerator arc back when I watched A Certain Magical Index, but the Sisters arc certainly blew my expectations out of the water. Hataraku Maousama would have to be a close second.

Summer: Uchōten Kazoku. Like jenkunoichi351, I literally added this on my list at the last minute. I always feel that it's better to try something out with zero expectations and this is one reason why I stand behind that thought. Behind that would be The World God Only Knows Goddess Arc (mostly because of the season finale), Tamayura ~more aggressive~, and Tokurei Sochi Dantai Stella Jogakuin Koutou-ka C³-bu in no particular order.

Fall: Kyousogiga. I've seen the OVA and ONAs prior to the TV series, but I've never thought much about it until they gave the plot a much more solid structure. After that, I'd say Yowamushi Pedal and Log Horizon.

Let's see, this looks like a fun thread. I've probably watched more anime this year than any other year. At the same time, while there were a lot I did enjoy, none really stuck out as outstanding. Still, random categories and stuff:

Best drama: Golden Time. Even though it's only halfway done, it sticks out. I find that it explores the characters in a way I very rarely see in anime.

Most laughs: Kitakubu Katsudou Kiroku. Got a sometimes weird humour that's not for everyone, but it worked well for me most of the time. Servant × Service gets the runner-up award here.

Best politics/economics: Maoyuu Maou Yuusha. Log Horizon certainly is good, but for me that's more about the characters than the world. Maoyuu manages to be interesting even when it's about dry facts.

Best visual style: Hyakka Ryouran Samurai Girls. While I would question some of the design choices, I really do like the overall artstyle of it. The heavy ink works very well.

Best action: None. Nothing impressed me here.

WAFFiest: Kiniro Mosaic. Tough choice, as both Gingitsune and Non Non Biyori are strong contenders, but Kiniro Mosaic is just so cute, and actually succeeds at it rather than feeling too pandering or shallow.

Most reasonable: Strike The Blood. So many situations where any other anime would go for the usual Slap Stick punishments, but instead the characters (mainly Yuki) are actually reasonable about it.

Biggest surprise: Tokurei Sochi Dantai Stella Jogakuin Koutou-ka C³-bu. I expected some bland but pleasant stuff like Upotte!! or Girls und Panzer. Turned out to have a lot deeper pit of darkness it decended into, despite otherwise being a rather happy anime. And it worked well. A personal honourable mention goes to Suisei no Gargantia, since it's not a genre I pay any attention to normally, but it was quite enjoyable.

Best So Bad, It's Good (or: "I have no idea why I watched this, but I don't regret it"): Coppelion. Ridiculous all around, mostly not very interesting character designs, but I somehow watched through it all without even reconsidering if it was something I really wanted to watch or not.

Nearest miss: Free!. I almost didn't give it a chance, as I didn't manage to get through the first episode, but that brief scene with Kou being tricked with a Duck Season, Rabbit Season ploy and immediately figuratively facepalming when she realised it made me give it a chance.

Should've been longer: Date A Live. Felt like too many plot threads were hanging loose, more can be done with it, even without resorting to fillers that don't accomplish anything. The setting isn't bad either.

Most uncomfortable to watch: Sekai de Ichiban Tsuyoku Naritai!. Imagine the worst you've heard about Dragon Ball Z, and substitute "guys powering up" with "girls squirming in pain", and you've got the problem. Diabolik Lovers is the main contender for this "honour".

Most disappointing: Monogatari. The previous season was very good, but this time, when the narrator changed, I lost interest and dropped it after a few episodes. It lacked its former charm and humour.

Most overrated: Kill la Kill. I did consider Attack on Titan, but since I haven't actually seen it, I can't honestly say it is overrated. I'd also like to say that I do like Kill la Kill. It's amusing, and the character dynamics are interesting. It's just not something you have to write about in all caps like way too many people do.

Most ridiculous fanservice: Walkure Romanze. A horse being fond of stealing underwear was on the lower side for this series.

Best "For Fun" Show: See above (Mondaiji Tachi Ga Isekai Kara Kuru Sou Desu Yo). I was going to write something myself, but I realised it was just rehashing the same thing. It's in the same class as Dog Days, in that it's just enjoyable to watch without pretending to be something it isn't and going all out in what it is.

Best voice: Miss Demon King, of Maoyuu Maou Yuusha. One of the several highlights of the anime was listening to her.

Best character: Laura Bodewig. Even if she wasn't as good as in the first season, she still rocks. She's honest, cutes up about stuff not involving the protagonist, has a hilarious Serious Business attitude about most things, having good humour, especially concerning Bed Mate Reveals, and being a Large Ham about all of the above.

Best Short: Miss Monochrome. Nonsensical, but it works, and it's surprisingly amusing.

Best anime: Gonna have to give this to The World God Only Knows. I was looking forward to it, and it didn't disappoint.

Winter: Maoyuu.
What can I say? I love economics. It's a nice turn from all those action and moe shows. Being someone who set a suicidal goal of working at the government, I want to stuff as much information as possible. Even if it's useless.

Spring: Attack on Titan
The first of the two Anyone Can Die Sleeper Hit of 2013. Like SAO, the fanbase was tiny when the anime adaption was announced, but exploded soon after. When I first heard the name from a jerk who went on and spoiled that Eren was a Titan, it gave me an impression of a surreal, Berserk-like art style. Turn out I was wrong. The art was much worse than that. [lol] But that's the reason I binge the whole manga in three days. The whole work was a tour de force, one cliffhanger after another.

Summer: Legend of Korra
Martial arts. Nuff said. Varrick is Elon Musk without the war scheme. Not into shipping and romance, the section about Korra's teenage drama was largely ignored by my mind, therefore my enjoyment of the show is not tinted by that.

Fall: Log Horizon
Another work by the author of Maoyuu. It has similar premises to SAO and may led one to think it's a heavy action work. Wikipedia didn't explain a whole lot of the work, so I kinda guess it is not grim and depressing and harem-like as SAO. Was expecting a comedic work with mini skits and gags, but was wrong. More realistic than SAO, has some very interesting settings, and your average Joe protagonist (average Joe being regular avid gamers). And finally, economics.

Honorable mention: Rwby and Nanocore
Two low budget work made by two different groups of anime fans, with different fate. Nanocore was more well made and rounded than Rwby, but was nothing more than an 11 minutes trailer, and not very well received in the anime fandom itself due to being animesquire. Rwby has some...mediocre animation, voice acting, and character design, but was an entire series, and very well received in the anime fandom due to being animesquire. ¯\\_(ツ)_/¯ They served as some insight to the anime fandom in general.

Greatest Disappointment: Kuiba II
My fault on my part. I put my expectations too damn high. Was expecting more explanation on what the hell is going on in Vast, but no, Vasoon give us one and a half hour of fights with some transition issues in between. On top of that, they also give us a Gainax Ending. What exactly did the protagonists achieved after almost dying a few times? And, this is personal and YMMV, I don't like the Ship Tease between Manji and Trueheart. Beside the age difference (Trueheart is 8-ish Tsundere, Manji is 13-ish and Really 700 Years Old Sealed Inside a Person-Shaped Can), it's too cliche.

I don't even know why am I watching it: Kill la Kill
Was not on the hype train in the first place. The music was awesome.

[up] I did said made by anime fans. Book 2 have half of its episodes made by Pierrot. Attack on Titan had some key animation outsourced to the same crew that worked on Kuiba. One can easily market the Japanese dub of Kuiba as an anime. The lines are vague. It's easier to just lump them together and call them Japanese style animation. There.

As Kill La Kill is yet to finish and could become terrible next year (let's hope it doesn't!), I'm going to give this award to Monogatari, as I felt that this year's series was a vast improvement on previous series of the show in almost every way, particularly as it has gone the opposite way to Nisemonogatari in the random out of place violence and nudity department, instead choosing to focus purely on witty dialogue, interesting characters and plot arcs, and gorgeous, gorgeous animation. Excellent. I haven't gotten round to watching Attack On Titan yet, however, despite the fact that everybody tells me I should.

All that said, I'm going to commit an even greater blasphemy, and paint a giant target on my back. The best anime I saw this year was Puella Magi Madoka Magica The Movie: Rebellion. Yes, it's a movie, and yes, it's close to Love It or Hate It, but it was the only Japanese cartoon I saw this year that made me think about it, that made me obsessed with it. The movie grabbed me when I watched in the theater, and even now it has not let me go.

[up] Attack On Titan only has 11.5 volumes out, so far. So, I don't think it qualifies for Archive Binge (yet).

A good chunk of the anime is also anime-only content. Not nonsensical fillers. The anime is actually a bit more substantial version of volumes 1 to 8.

Even the parts which differs from the manga doesn't put the story on another track. Though it's a good idea to read volume 8 as well if you plan to continue at the point where the anime ends.

But... if you consider all the manga spin-offs and novel spin-offs and visual novel spin-offs and games as part of the archive, then yeah - it qualifies for Archive Binge. Kodansha's licensing so many spin-offs that it isn't funny.

Personally, I felt that Rebellion wash not just the best anime movie of the year, but one of the best films of the year, period. Pretty much succeeding where 3.33 failed, I really wish it would be nominated for the Academy Award for Best Animated Film, but that won't happen sadly.

I think I would say that A Certain Scientific Railgun season 2 would have topped my list, except the entire season was a rehash of Index's plot arc. A very very good rehash, far better than the original, but still.

Oh hey, it's a new year and I didn't realize we had one of these.

My AOTY of last year is Space Battleship Yamato 2199...by a significant margin. I don't really care that it had its movie releases and stuff like that, it was part of the Spring TV season, so it counts. This is how you do a remake of a classic story. This was one of the best space operas I have seen in a long time in any medium. It may not excel in individual fields compared to other shows, but as a complete package, none of the shows I saw this year can even touch it. It's a shame that this show got buried under some of the more popular stuff this year because this is a show truly worth watching.

Runner-up goes to Jojos Bizarre Adventure. It ended in 2013, so it also counts :P. This show is just fun, plain and simple. It is stupid...sometimes yes. Is it deep...not really. But I didn't really care about those things when watching it. Sometimes I just want lighthearted, simple, turn-my-brain-off-and-enjoy shows. And this is exactly that. Plus, when I threw this on a big screen with surround sound like I did, I could not help but get the biggest grin.

...and I guess you guys like more "unique" awards, so here is the 2013 Rivvies of various dubious honors, lightning round style

[up]I didn't watch Attack on Titan. I did watch Blood Lad. And I liked Kurumi (by the way, this is one of my backgrounds). And I'm not sure I'd call Chamber a "bro". Kind of non-gendered to me. Still awesome, though.
