Needs Help: Colorblind Casting get usage counts

This trope has only 5 wicks and 7 examples, with 6 out of those 7 examples being listed already in Race Lift.

Color-blind casting is apparently an existing term referring to a casting practice where the actor's race and/or gender is not considered in regards to their role, but the examples are restricted to ethnicity which, again, is already covered by Race Lift.

I can't seem to find any YKTTW discussion for this trope either, so unless we can find more examples of Non-traditional casting roles that are not linked to ethnicity, this page should just be cut/merged to Race Lift.

I think here that the trope is the casting procedure and that should have a page as trivia at least, but the examples are focusing on the wrong thing. All the examples talk about the finished product when really the focus should be on the casting procedure itself. Even if there was no race lift involved.

Isn't this completely covered by Ability over Appearance?

Plus it looks like it was made in July, with no YKTTW.

Cut this, make Colorblind Casting a redirect to Ability over Appearance (since the name IS good).

Done.

[up] Not quite. Ability over Appearance still has them showing up for a role that describes a specific ethnicity.

Colorblind Casting, as used as an industry term, is used when the casting doesn't set an appearance standard by race. As such, it can't be Ability over Appearance because race matters for that, when it doesn't for this.

So basically, if you have Ability over Appearance, then you weren't using Colorblind Casting. It's impossible for the tropes to coexist at the same time.

... as defined by the trope page, they're exactly the same. The Colorblind Casting specifically mentions roles traditionally going to a gender, so clearly the casters have some idea in mind. And since the Colorblind Casting trope isn't even necessarily about race, it's not even The Same but More Specific; it's just the same.

That's something done more in adaptations. I've tweaked the definition to make it more clear as this is actually an industry term. Turning the order of the sentences around makes the difference clearer.

With that and the examples cleanup, the page is... alright now.

I still don't like the fact it got launched with no YKTTW.

I think this should be a Useful Notes page. It's not a Trope, and if it's listed in Main and written like a Trope page (as in, including examples) people will link to this when they're thinking of related Tropes. If this was made a Useful Notes page that excessive lumping would hopefully stop.

I think it needs to be classified as Trivia more than a useful note. I am not fond of the fact that it was launched without a YKTTW, but I'll see what I can do.

Huh, Best Of, didn't expect to see you here.

Not sure about Trivia, though. This seems like something that can show up in a work and be visible in it.

Trivia works for me. Although I'm not that opposed to leaving it in the Main/ space, since whether or not a role was written with a race in mind can affect how the script was written (thus being a storytelling trope). But I definitely see the argument for moving it to Trivia, as while it can affect how the story is written, it doesn't necessarily do so.

Barring things like Shakespeare, I don't know how distinguishable this is in practice from Race Lift even if we do make it specifically about the casting process.

It's actually something that's generally talked about in interviews and stuff outside the work itself. That's why I think it's trivia. You can find all sorts of articles online about the casting procedures of all sorts of works.

Not seeing a trope here, or at least not anything that isn't covered by Race Lift or Black Vikings or Ability over Appearance.

These really seem like consequences (or in the last item, the reason) of this trope/trivia, not this trope/trivia.

What's the difference between a Useful Note page and a Trivia page, actually?

The difference is that Colorblind Casting is when there is no attempt to match up the character race with the actor.

Race Lift should be when it is decided to change a character's race.

The first can result in families that are not genetically accurate.

The second ought to result in script/characterization changes to incorporate the new race.

[up]I don't believe that is truly the case. Race Lift is an objective observation about how the characters' race in an adaptational work differs from its original source material.

This trope is a casting procedure/practice of incorporating "ethnic minority and female actors in roles where race, ethnicity, or sex is not germane." to give equal opportunities to actors and really has nothing to do with the end result of the product. I'm not sure whether this'd work better as trivia or useful notes, though

So, Bottom line: What are the proposed actions to fix this(so I know what to put on the crowner)?

[up]Didn't someone suggested to switch this into a Useful Notes/Trivia page?

Yes, and then we pointed out that it wasn't within the purpose of either of those.

All's good then. I suppose this can safely be locked
