I'm cautiously looking forward to more Aila. She's unusually badass for a Gundam Phlebotinum Girl, and the happy, upbeat tone of the show makes it a bit less likely that something really horrible is going to happen to her. The writers could easily drop the ball, but they've put themselves in an unusually strong starting position by the franchise's standards.
What's precedent ever done for us?I'm fine with Aila, but loathe Nils with the fire of a thousand suns. I hated the "American who wishes he was Japanese" thing in 00, and I hate it even more in GBF when he's also a 13-year-old-double-blackbelt-triple-PhD smug sumbitch who beats an actually likable character in order to justify his continued presence in the show.
Given how much GBF likes to flip expectations on their head, I was sort of hoping that Nils (who's clearly expected to be the winner) gets beaten by Greco. Alas, no such luck. The first major misstep GBF has made, I'd say.
Really from Jupiter, but not an alien.Considering that GBF wasn't made for audiences OUTSIDE the homesoil, your loathe is pretty much irrelevant. SunDai aren't known for being foreigner-friendly, after all.
Same as usual.... Wing it.I... know? It's not like I think that Sunrise is interested in my opinion in particular, or even the English-speaking audiences' in general. They're not selling us anything, so they could care less. But you know, I sort of thought I'd use this Gundam Build Fighters forum thread to share my opinion about a recent development in Gundam Build Fighters. Call me crazy, I do stuff like that.
Really from Jupiter, but not an alien.Honestly, I was under the impression that Nils was supposed to be comically over-the-top. He's The Ace, not a Mary Sue, because he's not the main character. In fact, he's opposed to the main characters, if only in a friendly, sports-competition sort of way.
I also suspect that Ricardo will end up performing well against him, because we need to start justifying why that guy is a world-class player. Let's count his competition - we've got Nils the Omnidisciplinary Scientist Child Prodigy, a Char Clone, a Super-Soldier Phlebotinum Girl, and the genius heir to an ancient school of Gunpla. The most normal guy in there is Sei, and he's got a goddamned alien flying his suits for him. Ricardo, meanwhile, is... Italian, uses plastic models for hilariously awkward pickup-artistry, and gets used as a virtual punchbag by Reiji. We need to see what actually makes him special.
What's precedent ever done for us?Well, Episode 9 is up.
China's rival, Coreline (That she doesn't even knew she was her rival!) challenged her to an all girls gunpla tournament. So China decided to train with her Bearguy III WITH THE HELP OF SEI AND REIJI!
Nils appeared in this episode. Though he doesn't involve too much.
Oh, and Sazaki is watching the tournament too.
Bearguy III is stuffed with... cotton. Maybe I should stuff my gunpla with cotton too.

Was that a Allenby Expy?
youtube.com/Fire Trainer 92Yeah. Shame her Nobel Gundam jobbed super hard.
This episode was great, and Nils being the butt of a few comedic moments was good to see, as was him being surprised by the cotton.
Also
YA JI MA CARORAIN
Well Lets talk about Nils. Mr. Bushido was annoying but that was mostly because he was an adult. I can tolerate being a weaboo from a Kid. Although I am not sure he is a weaboo. I mean his mother did teach him Judo and Karate, he is a light skinned black dude and his room seems to have a totally Japanese Design. If I had to guess I would say his mother is Japanese. Besides genius superkids is standard fair in manga and anime so nothing shocking there or overly sueish. As for whether it should have been a tough fight I say no because Episode 8 was all about the new generation elbowing the competition out of the way. It being a close fight would not of gone with the theme of the new group having better mechs and better skills.
No one has a problem with him being a weeaboo. We knew that from the start.
What we didn't expect was him to have 3 phds, be the son of 2 super amazing famous people, be a god at plavisky hax, and be smug as shit.
Him fighting someone who was pretty awesome and curbstomping him didn't help.

The mastery of Plavisky Particles makes perfect sense since he has phds in particles.
Every accusation by the GOP is ALWAYS a confession.Well his mastery of Plasky Particles is directly related to his PH Ds. He is not the only one seeing as Mao has mastery as well. The real question is really why the adults are not all using it Riccardo does not seem to make use of it which implies u did not really need it before this year which is interesting since this is the 7th year but I suppose the tactic could have become mainstream now. As for him being smug, I would be too if I had 3 PH Ds. Still I think Episode 9 did a good job making him more human what with him being flustered by Caroline and Surprised at Bearguy using cotton.
One note I am surprised when they are staring across the room at each other there is not recognition.
re: Nils — the problem isn't whether or not he's justified in being a smug weeaboo jackass, it's the fact that being a smug weeaboo jackass makes him friggen annoying, which is especially irritating in that he was explicitly contrasted against Greco, a much more likable character in the first place.
That said, he was perfectly tolerable in episode 9. As long as he doesn't go around being more samurai than Bushido Bob and declaring fights-in-progress already over like he's Kenshiro or something, I don't have a problem with him, personally.
Really from Jupiter, but not an alien. How is Greco any more likable than Nils? He's a oneoff character who we barely know and Nils isn't much better.
I don't think Nils was that arrogant. Greco is going to fight a melee based mech in melee combat then him losing was the obvious result as soon as he lost the range advantage the match was over. I think people like Greco because he is a determinator and friends with Ricardo.
China's Bearguy painting was less "Cute teddy bear having a picnic" and more "Savage beast devouring it's food".
Sei's Mom is win.
Less She's Not My Girlfriend and more "I'm her girlfriend?" heh.
Wait, Caroline has a horse?
And she just kidnapped Niels. Heh.
This kind of makes me want to watch G-Gundam.
"No, the Singularity will not happen. Computation is hard." -Happy EntChiwa Satou as Caro-rain was fucking perfect.
Dat OH HO HO HO HO~
This show now has Les Yay in addition to the Ho Yay too? This really is the best Gundam ever.
"I'll show you fear, there is no hell, only darkness." My twitterI don't think you got what he meant by that, a typo probably. Or I missed something.

I can never seem to recognise Chiwa Saito's voice until someone points her out to me, at which point it becomes obvious...
It's late and plain. But maybe this year's tournament is the one where the new generation starts showing their stuff. After all, we got to see sei's father getting runner up for the 2nd using a (well made but non-customized) RX-78-2 but now we are seeing more and more customized ones, and with more knowledge of the particles.
Fun episode, bearguy with his facial expression, china's unknown rival and sei getting even more inspired. (despite what his mom wanted
Wonder who got the 1st prize though.
The Tropes page here lists Nils as half-Japanese though I have no idea where that info comes from. Is it really being a weeaboo if you've got a Japanese mom? I must admit I have no problem with the kid, and find it odd he's been the subject of so much discussion. Pretty much everything in this show is ridiculous and over-the-top so I just found his exaggerated intelligence par for the course.
The appearance from the Alenby expy was funny and unexpected. Shame she went down so fast though.

The Running Gag of having competitors who look exactly like pilots from the various Gundam shows actually brings up a funny Celebrity Paradox question.
Well we already have Mr. Ral.
So, I finally watched the episode:
