Did you know this section has a character limit?
#1: Oct 13th 2013 at 2:24:38 PM

For the entirety of human existence, there have been those who have been born with power greater than the norm. They served as inspiration for the Ancient Gods and Heroes of legend, and their memory has never been forgotten. These men and women were rare, literally one in a billion.

Until the summer of 1996. At the onset of puberty, children began to show signs of incredible power available to them, ranging from those who sported a level of intellect beyond genius, to those who could command one of the four traditional elements. The birth rate of these people, these people who wielded abilities above the norm, had risen to one in four.

It was soon after that over a tenth of the superhuman population went insane. The others reported of horrific nightmares nightly, a battle of wills between them and a monster lurking in their brain.

Scientists went to work, trying to isolate and suppress this corruption within. Within days, a breakthrough had been made, and within months, a drug called Antiid was available to the masses. However, it was not cheap enough for some, and still people fell to the corruption. They called these people many names, but over the course of several years, "Fallen" became the commonplace term.

Fallen attracts Fallen, and soon it became clear these masses of highly dangerous monsters were a danger to anything that came near. The United Nations set up an international quasi-military force, called the Fallen Elimination Strike Teams, that would set out to face this enemy whenever it appeared. The Governments of the world swore that they would contribute their best people, both magic and mundane, to combatting this threat.

They were lying through their teeth. The emergence of the superhumans created a new arms race, with everyone able to get in on the action. No-one wanted to send their actual best people, and instead, the below-average made up the rank and file of FEST. Unable to find what they needed from the contributing countries, FEST was authorised to recruit and train the willing civilian populace. It was a highly dangerous job, but it payed well, and gave free Antiid to those who needed it.

The year is 2015. As the World Economy begins declining once more, more and more succumb to the "Id", the monster that lurks in the dark recesses of a superhuman's consciousness. Whether through desperation, the desire to be a hero, no choice of your own or not giving a damn if you live or die, you've (been) signed up, (maybe) have gone through bootcamp and now owe the next four years of your life (or less if you die) to FESTER - Fallen Elimination Strike Team: European Region.

Welcome to F.E.S.T.E.R., a part-military, part-magic with a dash of Superhero/ Super-Soldier/Magic Users OC RP coming straight from the mind of a not-quite-imaginative, possibly deranged, not-actually-that-good-at-roleplaying, first time GM. This might turn out to be utter crap, it might not, we'll see.

As with every other RP, the standard rules of etiquette apply, i.e. No godmodding, metagaming, autohitting, ghosting, summoning Cthulhu to override the GM, etc.

Setting:

As said above, the year is 2015. The emergence of powered individuals is the primary turning point in this Alternate Universe, however, not much has changed. Although this was a new, abundant resource, this was a resource that everybody had access to, so it gave no advantages to either side in any major conflict. The major change was in the death rate, as Healers were able to cure diseases which would normally be fatal, and Seeders, employed by charities, the UN or local governments, vastly increased food supplies in third world countries.
Although at first feared and hated, superhumans eventually became a part of normal life, much of which is thanks to the random nature of who gained powers, and the high birth rate. Second Generation superhumans have begun to develop, with any superhuman parent being a guarantee of superhuman abilities. Predictions are being made that before the end of the millennium, unpowered humans will be in the minority, if not completely wiped out.
FESTER is based 20km outside of Berlin, in a complex uncreatively known as FESTER Berlin. Other bases are located in Wales, Spain, Sweden, Greece, France, Italy, Ukraine and Western Russia, with the FEST Global Headquarters being located in the United Nations building in New York. As the name suggests, FESTER is merely the European branch of FEST, with FESTNAR, FESTSAR, FESTASR, FESTAFR, and FESTOR being the sister groups of FESTER.
——

Character Signup Sheet:

  • Name: (Your character's first name and last name. Middle names and nicknames are optional.)
  • Age: (Superhumans are restricted to August/September 1983 as the earliest possible birth date. Non-powered individuals, go wild.)
  • Appearance: (What your character looks like. Description or Picture.)
  • Power: (Here, I want some world-building from you guys. Get creative. One Power per person, but you have the entirety of superhero fiction, and magical fiction to come up with something. Think before you act however, and brainstorm how this power could be used in the civilian world. Those with superintelligence, for example, would find good work in CERN or the CIA. Shapeshifters would also be useful for espionage, or the modeling industry, the acting industry, even the "Power Perversion Potential" industry, as we'll call it here. Think "Why, with this power, would the character work with FESTER? Could this character find a better job suited to their power?" Essentially, take their justification for joining FESTER into account before choosing their power.)
    • Weapons: (Required: A sidearm and/or a personal defense weapon. If you're not a weapon aficionado or want to focus on the powers instead, the Glock series of firearms is quite popular, while in the PDW (small automatic firearm that fires a Pistol calibre bullet, or a bullet somewhere between pistol and assault rifle size) department, you can't go wrong with the MP7, the P90 or the MP5. Everyone else, go nuts here. The Watsonian reason behind this is that with so many militaries coming together, logistics would be a bitch anyway. The Doylist reason is Rule of Fun. Super Strong characters could conceivably carry a minigun, it's battery and enough bullets to count. AT (Anti Tank weaponry) could come in handy too.)
  • Personality: (Here should contain the motivations for joining FESTER. The usual options are "Desperate", "Desire to do good/be a hero" and "Military Fuckup the upper brass wanted to get rid of".)
  • Backstory: (Superhumans: Born in/after 1983. Normals: Go nuts. Octogenarians are ill advised. Usually, Racism wouldn't be a problem, but it could conceivably fit in.)

Accepted Characters:

  • Name: Cale Normandi
  • Age: 27
  • Power: Cale's power is called "The Irreversible"; he regards this power as both a blessing and a curse. He has a powerful black Battle Aura he can shape into attacks. This battle aura makes everything he breaks or destroys stay destroyed. If he hits a ship with a blast of it, the ship will never be able to be repaired. Something will always happen. If he "destroys" a relationship he has with someone, that relationship will remain bitter. Many have remarked that his aura feels acidic and "really bad."
  • Weapons: He carries a Glock series hand gun.
  • Appearance: Cale is a handsome, square jawed fellow, having black hair that he has allowed to grow out some from his initial buzz cut, icy blue eyes, and a rather pale complexion. He looks almost constantly grumpy and like he has something else he'd much rather be doing. He wears the uniform of FESTER now. He has a tall, muscular appearance.
  • Personality: In the present day, Cale is much more a stoic young man, though he does show signs of a violent, angry personality underneath this front. He is still rather ambitious and devoted to the idea of increasing his family's esteem out of a thought he had sullied his family's name. He has mixed feelings about working with FESTER, but is willing to accept it for now. He still enjoys drink and "the company of beautiful women". Indeed, Cale is quite the afficionado of alcohol. Even so, he still enjoys physical activities and moving about rather than staying in one place. Even with personality as it is, its generally not a good idea to be The Bully around him.
  • Backstory: Ah, Cale. How far he has fallen. Cale had always been a troubled boy; his parents were only rarely around, and he struggled through school not because of a lack of intellect, but because of numerous episodes of depression. He secretly took to drinking at age 15, and his parents barely even noticed. His act of heroism grabbed their attention, and he was suddenly made a celebrity. Cale, The Hero. Maybe, one day, Lord Cale. No attention was paid to his increasing temperamental problems, or his tendencies toward fights. It was only after he entered the military that hints started to show. His reason for being in FESTER is a simple one; he was a huge military fuck up that England wanted out and gone, no matter what. Granted an MBE in his teenage years for assisting in getting rid of rubble covering a large number of people using his powers. However, during later service in the military, he became a figure of infamy; he was bad tempered, violent, a flagrant playboy, and a Smug Super for the ages. He finally went too far when he heard tell that, in Afghanistan, a senior Taliban officer was working out of a village. He led a group of soldiers and massacred everyone in said village "just to be sure". Once this came out, all his fame turned to infamy and disgust. He was basically a huge mess, and while there was a movement to try him for war crimes, it was always obfuscated or made complicated by his family or affiliates. Cale was finally just handed over to FESTER to get rid of the irritating mess.

Question. Has this world had contact with aliens? Are magic users distinct from supers? Do any other supernatural entities or powers exist if magic does also?

I'm just wondering if every super has to suffer from this corruption, considering a magician's power is not his own, and an alien species or a robot would logically not be afflicted by human medical or psychological conditions.

No aliens or robots yet, and all powers are considered magic, because Science can't explain it yet. Every powered person has the corruption, but FEST supplies all it's supers with Antiid, so it's only a problem if you make it a problem.

Nick The Swing: I'm looking over it, but I'm wary of a few things. The MP 5 is a Submachine Gun or PDW, not an assault rifle. For an assault rifle that's similar to MP 5, look at the HK33, specifically the HK53 variant. A full knighthood at that young would be difficult to acheive, but I could see an MBE instead. Finally, British gun laws are pretty heavy duty, as is most of Europe. Handguns being passed down from father to son definitely wouldn't happen there.

  • Name: Lilith
  • Power: Control of the static and dynamic. Can turn constants into variables, and vice versa. An example could be how she normally requires oxygen to breathe, which is constant. She can change that if she wishes, so that she potentially doesn't need to breathe at all. This extends to her surroundings as well, magma is extremely hot, she can lower it to room temperature while keeping it in a liquid state. She once pranked someone by giving them wings and gills.

  • Weapons: Carries around a musket from the Napoleonic era, which she has changed so that it fires at approximately the same rate as an AK-47. It's also rather accurate. She's kept the bayonet as well.
  • Personality: Ambition, she desires an influential role in the world, and as FESTER is an international organisation, she considers it the quickest route. She's rather whimsical, she know's what she wants, but she is potentially immortal, so she's rather patient. She's also quite selfish. Her desire for influence and power is also rather fleeting, it's always there, but it varies in importance to her.
  • Backstory: She's lived for 24 years, but her physical appearance changes, if she wants to be cute she changes it to that of a 10 year old. She prefers shapes that resemble her original body, just younger or older. She sometimes unnerves people by appearing very young and then discussing things that would seem beyond her.

[up] Okay, first off, thank you, because your post reminded me I forgot to add an "Appearance" section.
Second, the backstory is mainly appearance and age. They should really fit into the other categories.
Third, your power is pretty much being a Reality Warper. That's... honestly way too powerful. Sorry.

Mindreading is cool, but we're usually fighting mindless monsters. And Expies are cool here, I suppose. Though usually, aren't the girls from Touhou pretty young?

EDIT: If you are making an Expy, at least make it feel more like an original character.

The main characters are young, the age of the majority of the cast is left rather ambiguous.

Koishi's power isn't exactly mind reading, it's...

Actually, just read her entry on the Touhou characters page. It's at the end of the subterranean animism folder.

Honestly, I think I'd prefer it if you made an OC. Really, Expies don't sit well with me, especially in an OC RP.

Then again, this RP might not even go ahead. This is an Interest Check too.

Name: Patrick "Jericho" Kingsman

Age: 21

Appearance: Stands at 6Ft 5. Has long blonde hair, sits in a middle shed. Always wears rugged kind of clothing, black cargo's, thick layered jackets with chains and zips. A kind of military skater/metal look. Blue eyes. Slim but muscular build.

Power: Can materialise blood into a strange substance that best resembles carbon steel in strength etc. But can alter its characteristics to make it more maluable(bendy) or brittle etc. Can only Materialise the same ratio of blood to "Iron" As Jericho calls. (Chemical joke Mwahaha)

Weapons: An SA 80 A2 Rifle, that he keeps in his quarters in FESTER, along with his more used Magnum .44. But has a very large collection of traditional weapons, katana's, naginata's Nunchaku, shuriken, Claymore's, cane swords, katar's etc. Most of which he would use in actual combat since they draw blood quicker than bullets and easier to harvest blood that is on his weapon.

Personality: Very happy, outgoing, funny kind of guy. Loves being in awkward situations because he is not affected by them and always tries to embarrass people. Very kind and considerate. Quite gentleman-like. Very enthusiastic about things. Always laughing.

Backstory: Had a very simple job in his, he would harvest the blood in the Doctor's office and so on to make items for the community that people requested. Kind of like a 3D printer for the Scottish highlands where he lived until he was 18, when his brother succumbed to the madness that was a risk with having powers. He killed several of his friends and family in the rampage until Jericho stabbed him using a giant blood needle made from his mother's blood. After a stage of depression, he finally joined the military to stop similar massacres and to get the medication to stop it happening to him.

Any problems with the sheet and I'll change it as required smile

Nick:
First off, the power. It's very creative, but it feels more like two or three powers. You have the "Whatever breaks, stays broken", the super strength and the super durability. However, we could spin the Aura into a Lucky/Unlucky Aura. Instead of superstrength, he hits someone is just the right place for a One-Hit KO or pulls at something in just the right way for him to be able to move it. Instead of durability, he gets grazed or hit non-fatally. The forever-break blasts could be Unlucky Lasers, dooming any repair attempts to failure. And the bad luck in his life could be attributed to his Aura rolling Natural 1s instead of 20s. His luck could change with the flip of a coin.
Secondly, the backstory. Seems fine, for the most part, but the incident that got him canned could need altering. Historic events usually went as they did in real life, so a Middle Eastern war that involved the British Army would be Iraq or Afghanistan, which don't have Princes, or enemy medical staff. If you want a Court Martiallable offense, while still being able for him to wrongly justify it to himself, he could've "Taken out the enemy support structure", AKA massacred a village.
Thirdly, there's a lot in "Personality" that could be moved to "Backstory".

Ulqahart:
Welcome. First off, what does "sits in a middle shed" mean?
Second, tiny nitpick, the SA 80 A 2 would probably be kept in the armoury when off-mission.
Third, feel free to bring the melee weapons on missions, I was expecting melee fighters.
Fourth, brilliant power idea, but I take it that the blood needs to be spilt to be used?
Fifth, great backstory idea, but that would mean he'd join FESTER, not going through any military first.

Jorgen:
Sorry to see you go.
Desdenelle:
Glad to see you here.

Hmm, yeah, two powers or three in one do seem unfair. I think I'll trim it down to just giving him the "what breaks, stays broken aura."

A middle shed is when the hair parts in the middle, a middle parting might be another word. And any blood touching his body that is connected to more blood perhaps? If his sword was covered in blood and he touched, any blood that was touching his hand and that bit of blood could be used. But that would mean theoretically he could stab someone and touch the wound and solidify their blood. This may require some thought...

And about the gun I assumed it would be in some kind of base but I didn't know if we stayed at HQ or only for mission preparations, he mainly uses melee weapons.

Excellent, it's this kind of idea that I could just touch someones bleeding wound and kill them instantly though, maybe some kind of drawback that makes sure i can;t do something so OP, like, oxidized blood only? Blood that has touched the air and started congealing)
