Real name Robert "Doc" Cox, he's a British performer, had a handful of songs which appeared on the Dr. Demento Show, and infamously appeared on a fair amount of American jukeboxes with his "I'm a Wanker" song being rendered as "I'm a Winker", which may have contributed to people overlooking its content. Some really hilarious bawdy tunes ("John Thomas Allcock" or "Halfway Up Virginia", a couple of others that sound really dirty, but aren't ("A Cue for a Song" for example), and a few, like "The Pussy Song" which zig-zag it.

Anyhow, I was singing one of his songs quietly to myself this morning in an attempt to exorcise it before starting work and it occurred to me that I might post about him on here and see if anyone else was a fan.

I'm sort of a fan in that I do like some of his songs - "I'm a Wanker," "Bras on 45," "The Wanker's Rock 'n' Roll"...

But then I do like novelty music in general.

I hadn't heard of him before picking up Dr. Demento's 30th anniversary collection. That's still pretty much all I've heard of him.

I'm not big on bawdy songs, but "Bras On 45" was enjoyable enough, especially for someone like me who's old enough to remember disco medleys. Plus points for some of his rhymeplay.

Minus points for mispronouncing "Weird Al" Yankovic's last name, even if it led to Subverted Rhyme Every Occasion.

I wasn’t aware that any of his singles got US releases. According to Discogs, this one didn’t, and has always appeared under the title “Winker’s Song (Misprint)” (at least as a single release).

That one and “Bra Size 45” are the only songs of his I’ve ever heard. The latter hasn’t really aged very well, heavily dependent on references to the UK pop charts circa 1979, especially those cheesy Stars on 45 medleys.

We actually had "The Winker's Song" on a jukebox at a pool hall near our high school (our gym teacher believed in a wide variety of sports, so some of our subjects included pool, archery, gymnastics, and bowling along with the usual calisthenics). The kids in our class took great pleasure in alternating it with "Strokin'". ^_^ Ah, childhood...

And, as I said earlier, I absolutely love his duet version of "Hello My Baby". Admittedly, it's all of maybe three songs of his that I can sing in mixed company... the others being his cover of "Chantilly Lace" and "I Wanna Be A Bear" (and the latter, I keep thinking there must be a dirty joke I'm missing).
