War is an absolute classic. It just has this amazing energy that makes the whole "protest rock" thing work. Especially songs like New Year's Day and Seconds
"I could eat a knob at night" - Karl PilkingtonThose two are really powerful, yeah.
My favourite album would be Achtung Baby. Mostly because they made a really good reinvention.
I'm also like October a lot.
My favourite song (well, one of my favourites) is "Where The Streets Have No Name". Everything is top notch. Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois' production, Edge's playing, the whole crescendo. It always gives me those good goosebumps.
I got their Best of 1980-1990 album back when I was in middle school and that album helped me get into rock music in general.
However despite listening to them off and on for the past eight or nine years I've never really had the urge to dig heavily into their back catalogue. Their only albums I've listened to in full are The Joshua Tree, Achtung Baby and How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb. Achtung Baby is my favorite of those and is probably one of my favorite albums of all time. I like the more intimate, personal nature of that album when compared to their more anthemic 80s sound.
Achtung Baby is probably my favourite album bar none. It just has a sort of overbearing sense of presence and personality that few works of music can match - not to mention brilliantly written and composed as well. :D
Echoing hymn of my fellow passerine | Art blog (under construction)Something random I found: Here's Chris Cornell performing U2's famous song "One" using the lyrics to Metallica's famous song "One". It's awesome!

is there a U2 cover band called ME 3 yet?
movin out to the countryU2 will perform "Ordinary Love" live for the first time at the upcoming Grammys.
"Mysterious Ways" is by far my favorite song of theirs. That said, while I have Achtung Baby and The Joshua Tree, I get bored quickly trying to listen to entire albums...they're definitely a greatest hits band for me.
My favourite track has always been The First Time.
They rarely ever play it live, and a show in Melbourne I saw years ago was one of those rare occasions. Blew my mind.
YUUGI WANTS YOU FOR DRINKING BUDDYI like everything they've done up to about 1999/2000 or so (don't listen to much of it after), but Achtung Baby and Zooropa are still my favorite albums of theirs, and "Mysterious Ways", "The Fly", "Love Is Blindness", "Lemon" and "Zooropa" are my favorite songs by them, oddly enough...
If at first ya don't succeed, try a bit more, then give up or cheat... ;) -Myself Nothing can stop me now! -Piggy by Nine Inch NailsA while back I listened to "Numb" and "Lemon" off of Zooropa and I didn't care much for either song, so I didn't have the urge to check out that album. How do those songs compare to the rest of the album? As I mentioned above I love Achtung Baby so I feel like I should like Zooropa if it was made in the same vein but those two songs sound like they were trying too hard to be "artsy" and "different".

Well, "Numb" isn't what I'd call typical of the album- it's more abrasive than most of it, for starters. "Lemon" is more Italodisco-y than the rest is, too. The album's title song is a good barometer, as are songs like "Stay" and "Dirty Day". A lot of it has a slight Trip-Hop influence...
Also, there's "The Wanderer", which actually features JOHNNY CASH backed by what sounds like the lounge band from hell...

If at first ya don't succeed, try a bit more, then give up or cheat... ;) -Myself Nothing can stop me now! -Piggy by Nine Inch NailsI just listened to Zooropa's title track and I definitely like it. It has more of an Achtung Baby-feel to it, and it'll probably grow on me with repeated listens. I'll listen to the whole album at some point.
Good song, good album. If you didn't like "Numb", though, ya probly won't like "Daddy's Gonna Pay For Your Crashed Car", either, since it's more of that style but perhaps even more extreme...
"Zooropa" has an odd song structure- instead of verses and choruses, it has three or four sections with different feels to them, one after another. A lot of other bands have song structures like this (mostly Metal and Prog bands), but it's interesting here 'cause U2 didn't usually write songs like that...
If at first ya don't succeed, try a bit more, then give up or cheat... ;) -Myself Nothing can stop me now! -Piggy by Nine Inch NailsMy dislike of "Numb" and "Lemon" has more to do with the songs' vocal style than their musical style. I don't really like the falsetto Bono uses on both songs nor The Edge's droning rap on "Numb" which sounds gimmicky. I just listened to the track you mention and I actually like it. Bono uses his regular voice and it has a neat atmosphere. I don't listen to much industrial-related music outside of some Nine Inch Nails, but I do like hearing industrial elements in a more muted context.
Ah. Well, the song I mentioned definitely doesn't have the falsetto. I'm a big NIN fan myself, so cheers. I always thought the Edge's rap was kinda cool, myself, mostly just cause it sounds... well, numb, oddly enough... Fits the theme.
If at first ya don't succeed, try a bit more, then give up or cheat... ;) -Myself Nothing can stop me now! -Piggy by Nine Inch NailsI really dig Pop. That puts me in the minority, I'm pretty sure.
YUUGI WANTS YOU FOR DRINKING BUDDYActually, Pop is a great album, IMHO. Not quite as good as Achtung Baby or Zooropa, but still really solid...
If at first ya don't succeed, try a bit more, then give up or cheat... ;) -Myself Nothing can stop me now! -Piggy by Nine Inch NailsDon't care much for Pop, but their performance of "Discotheque" in Mexico City is a sight to behold (in the same vein as the earlier "Daddy's Gonna Pay For Your Crashed Car" at Zoo TV Sydney). The whole thing to me seems like a case of the band pushing things too far in the Zooropa direction without the production support they needed.
I like "Numb"; it's the first track I heard from Zooropa, and though I've grown to prefer the title track it's still one of their most distinctive.
Echoing hymn of my fellow passerine | Art blog (under construction)"Zooropa" is one of their more interesting songs- some cool textures and an unusual structure. It's a favorite of mine, too.

I haven't listened to their newest album yet. Is it any good?
Depends on what you're comparing it to. I listen to Boy a lot and found a lot of tracks from Songs of Innocence quite reminiscent in composition and feel. If you're expecting a big, stylish hit machine like The Joshua Tree or Achtung Baby, though, you'd probably be quite disappointed.
Echoing hymn of my fellow passerine | Art blog (under construction)I like Boy as well, so I'll listen to it then.
I love U2. I actually haven't listened to their full albums yet, but I've definitely loved a lot of their songs.
Hey.
Noticed that there was no thread for U2. So I might as well start it.
So, any favourite albums and/or songs you have? News to share? Ever been to one of their gigs/concerts?
As for me, I will tell what I like later and so forth.
