Not southern or northern. More of one of those grey in between areas.
People are mirrors. If you smile, a smile will be reflected.Virginia doesn't serve good sweet tea, which is the critical criterion for being considered "Southern". The South really starts with North Carolina.
Smile for me!Depends where,...where I am in the Shenandoah is synonymous with The South,I've traveled enough through the South and the mannerisms are much closer to the South than the Northeast.
On the other hand Charlottesville and the DC suburbs definitely seem a lot like Maryland-lite than the South.
Then again I'm a Left-coaster by origin
Luminous beings are we, not this crude matterGeographically, it's not Southern at all.
Culturally/stereotypically/historically, it's very much Southern.

byeIt depends on where you go. As you get farther East, it gets less southern. Virginia Beach isn't very southern. The western side of VA is more southern. Geographically, it's probably midatlantic with Maryland and Delaware.
As a Northerner who just visited Virginia, the Norfolk area downtown had a bit of a Southern feel if you were to concentrate on just the building architecture and ignore the Naval presence everywhere ;) The other place I was like Virginia Beach might as well have been in Wisconsin for all you tell the difference.
Devypu's~ Big Pony :3Charlottesville isn't really all that different from somewhere in Maryland now,...while Bristol and Wytheville are practically like Tennessee
Luminous beings are we, not this crude matterI lived in Virginia Beach until 1995 and it's not really Southern at all, even though it's in the very southeastern corner of the state. It's, uh...beach-y. And has a kickass marine science museum that I would marry if it were a person.
Somehow you know that the time is right. The Virginia Aquarium is indeed awesome. I visited it way too much as a kid though. :P
It was very nice aight
Devypu's~ Big Pony :3It's probably the least Southern of the Old Confederacy states around. Still more Southern than Maryland or Delaware though, as that's where the South starts according to the government.
Everything on that side of the country is eastern.
/Californian.

Luminous beings are we, not this crude matterWell it is technically true.
hashtagsarestupidWe Midwesterners definitely put you in the South.
ok boomerWell, I am not entirely sure as I have never been there, but Virginia from what I have heard is one of those blacklisted american states I should avoid.
From what I know of it, I'd say it's one of those grey areas - your culture is a mix between New England and the deeper parts of the South - making it a mix in my eyes.
"Did you expect somebody else?"That's pretty accurate - at least where I live.

Somehow you know that the time is right.Because we burn Mexicans at the stake there.
"What a century this week has been." - Seung Min KimI tend to think of it as mostly "mid-Atlantic".
Stupid doomed timeline...Welp.
My Witch girls Adventure campaign is set in Virginia. So i'm allways interested to learn about their cultural Practices.
The game's default setting is Maine so a mixture of southern and New English culture sounds appropriate.

Hey all - I'm a native Virginian and I've never thought that my home state was that "southern", apart from our Civil War history. Since I have a native New Englander mother, I've actually considered it to be part of the northeast - at least in my mind. What are your guys' perception of Virginia?
