I'm not sure if this is question have been asked before, but is there a way to change my user/handle name?

You'll need to start a new account with the desired name.

And what becomes of the old handle? Does it get deleted if it's inactive for long enough?

Yes. Its contributions stay, though.

Well, what if I want to keep my editing and PM history? Is it possible to transfer all of that from one handle to the other?

I imagine that if I do such a thing, I'll need to alert mods about it so nobody thinks the new handle is a sockpuppet or something? How would I go about getting that information to the right people?

Normally we don't worry about sockpuppets as long as none of the handles misbehaves. Then we may track them down to prevent ban evasion. There is no need to tell us unless we have pending issues with you.

How long does the account need to remain inactive before it's deleted?

It's not a constant thing. These purges happen from time to time.

Hello, may I ask, if it is possible to change one's Handle/Troper Name or at least the appereance therof (that is, in every appeareance except the already existing URL and itself only)? I'm sorry to bother and am grateful for every little help in advance. Wuschel

Inserting punctuation is something you can ask for with a Custom Title. We don't have a full rename functionality - it might be something worth thinking about.

Wow, thank you for the fast reply! Yes, I meant the full rename. My collegue and I tried for quite awhile to create a differently named Troper-account and failed every time. Maybe this here worked because of a different mail adress/company or the shorter name, but there are some Tropers with even longer names, so that seemed unlikely. The other tries with other adresses failed for unknown reason after receiving each time the acceptance-mail, though. It would be truly helpful if the admins thought about considering this functionality. Thank you for your feedback!

Well, if it's a problem with making an account, what exactly goes wrong when you try?

Also, a rename handle functionality will have to be proposed in the Wiki Tech Wish List. All tech feature requests belong there.

There are a two problems: - The problem that stays even after this big update is that, after receiving the acceptance-mail from tvtropes on some mail adresses/servers/companies the link goes to the Login page and after trying to log in an error message claims that the password or handle are wrong whilst both are correctly written. - Another problem, that may have been even the same before the update but did not clarify itself, is something, that now got (probably) obvious, a letter too much in the handle/name (25 letters instead of 24). Though, on some occasions it did work and then the problem above came into effect. Also, some good while ago there seemed to not be this limitation, so why it gave the standart error message was unclear.

Are you trying to include a space in the handle? You need to leave the space off.

Oh, no-no, it was supposed to be "Snarky Yuri Und Genki Wuschel". Without the automatically generated spaces. (Well, truth be told, I tried it a few times WITH spaces..) The problem was that even when used this shorter form here it still did not work on many adresses. The times it half-worked with the long one it got stuck in the main problem, as above.

We're still working on login issues behind the scenes. Until these are resolved, it is not really possible for us to tell you exactly why a particular login attempt failed.

Our handle creation guidelines say (or should say) that you should only include standard alphanumeric characters in your handle, and that your handle should start with an uppercase letter. Anything else will cause problems with some of our systems, like making a user page.

The use of a custom title to change how your handle displays is a feature that's worked inconsistently over time.

Yes, of course, I understand.

According to that guidelines the name should fit, shouldn't it? I suppose 'not longer than 24 alphanumerical letters' is now included, too. On the other hand, before it was included it did not work, though.

I'm sorry, I don't quite understand that last sentence of yours. Could you mean, that trying to change the display of the name by the 'custom title' option is a way to work this out? I was afraid that except punctuation and colons it is not permitted to change the appereance in this way by that option. If it is, my problem would be probably/actually solved.

There is not a handle length limit that I'm aware of, although there might be something in the underlying code.
