Hayao Miyazaki, one of the world's most admired animators, is retiring. His latest project, "The Wind Rises," which has been playing in Japanese theaters since late July, will be his last feature film.

Miyazaki had made 11 films including My Neighbor Totoro, Howl's Moving Castle, and Spirited Away.

He's announced his retirement several times before, IIRC.

[up] Yeah. Mononoke was his "first last movie". I think this is something line the fifth time he's announced his retirement.

This is going to sound a little nasty but I'll believe it when he's dead and not before.

Eh, the man deserves a break for once, I think.

[up] This is probably his way of saying "stop asking me. I'll made another one when I feel like it". He's earned it at this point.

He earned that after his first five films.

If he was ever actually forced to make a film, it didn't stop him from trying his level best in all aspects. Him and all of Studio Ghibli with him. He should be allowed to do whatever he wants at this point.

[up][up][up] Yeah, lol. Spirited Away was his first made-during-retirement film.

From what I understand there are a couple of issues at play.

1) Miyazaki the Elder is a workaholic perfectionist. He's happier when working and even when he's not, he's a bit of a back seat driver.

2) He and Takahata have been looking for someone to take over Studio Ghibli entirely. They were thinking over handing over the studio to Kondo Yoshifumi (who directed Whisper of the Heart) but those plans fell through when he died and they've been looking for someone to hand the reigns to ever since.
