I used to watch an anime-styled cartoon in the mid to late 2000s. It was about the main character (who was drawn in a normal, wacky and cartoonish Western style), winning a contest and moving to Tokyo to be in a TV show about Humongous Mecha. All of the other characters were drawn in a traditional anime style, but became chibi when they experienced extreme emotions. The series followed a Slice of Life format in which they dealt with their relationships with one another as well as the frustrations of running the show. It was named something along the lines of "X in Tokyo" or "X in Japan" (where X was the name of the American main character). There was also a tiny purple animal that could talk, and looked a bit like Pikachu.

The details I can recall are pretty vague, and it might have even been an anime that had been localized, but I remember enjoying it somewhat. Can anyone give me its title?
