And unfortunately we lack a Mr. Rogers to bail us out this time around.

Okay I want to know what they're calling this new legislation? I seriously don't think they would call this new legislation SOPA, its both a Death Sentence and Non inductive, since only section 201 is the only one they're attempting to pass.

My guess is that it would ultimately be enforced similar to the civil prohibitions against piracy: pick a few unlucky losers and send them up the river for years to try to scare everyone else into compliance.

Really, reasonable restrictions on fines and jail time would actually make it less scary than the multi hundred-thousand dollar lawsuits that are leveled by the civil offenses.

It's supposed to be scary, though. The RIAA and allies are spending huge amounts of money to hire the government to use terror tactics.

I despise hypocrisy, unless of course it is my own.

Don't they know that's a very, very ''very bad idea?

Internet Backlash is hardly describing Internet's reaction.

It's like bullying a dragon with an average peasant... I guess.

Here my (admittedly insane wild mass guess theory):

  • People fear what they don't understand right?
  • They don't know what this law says.
  • (the crazy pert) This bill is more liberal than the parties of the gys twho supported it. I think the Democrats put the lobbyists up to putting the Republicans up this so they will lose face and make it harder to get Obama impeached (not that it was easy to begin with, but you know that greed, envy and paranoia go hand in hand). Granted this little Conspiracy Theory I've cooked up only works if the guys trying to resurrect Provision 201 were Republicans.

(*takes off Tinfoil Hat)

Now that i got the crazy out of my system. What are the odds that the Senate will stop this? Also, has the POTUS said anything about this proposition yet?

here's a couple petitions BTW

America's becoming more and more of a police state as it is, so I wouldn't be surprised if this bill gets passed eventually. They can't just point to "TEH TERROISTS!1!!1" with this one, but I'm sure that if this doesn't get passed now, they'll find some way to pass it later. They'll slip it under everyone's nose when we're all tired of arguing against it.

Alternatively, if they have no intention of this passing, the consideration of it at all is just political stalling. People will lobby for and against it, it doesn't get passed, other bills aren't considered, and nothing has changed except that their collective bank accounts are larger. Either way, this isn't helping anyone except the politicians and possibly the RIAA people, as per usual.

I can't remember the exact details, but a few decades back a bill with the same vague "anti-piracy" provisions was slipped in under the radar under the guise of protecting musicians, and when the musicians found out, they fought back, hard. It got repealed.

My point is that even if this is passed, all it will take is a few kids or grandparents getting arrested for sending funny cat videos, and the public will tear it down.

Just for the commentary:

Some times I think that the stereotype of young people being apathetic is directly related to the fact that no one listens when we say ‘knock it off.’ Times like this, I think I’m pretty damn certain.

Share it so that people can get into this conversation, 'cause we're not the only ones who think like this.

Might wanna give some evidence to back up such a bold claim.

[up] I recall there being a law passed that can allow the US Government to kill anyone they please and no one can say shit about it... or something like that. Either way, people were citing it as the end of America as a free country.

I think this is the one.

[up]Ah yes the NDAA aka the reason for Paranoia Fuel about drones (Well at least in part)

FYI I knew that they would not bring back SOPA (You'd think that if they did, they would revive more than one section) So now that this has been cleared up (And because as i pointed out earlier that even the Government is stupid enough to bring SOPA back under that acrynoym) can we lock the thread before it gets derailed?

[up][up]A quick question before (or if) it gets locked:

What happens if the bill turns into something akin to SOPA? Some bills evolve by adding or removing rules to them, so this one will be no exception.

[up] than it becomes likely that the cooperation mentioned in the blog would STILL not support. And of course Internet Backlash would ensue and of course more Enemy Mining between Anonymous, politicians who hate the bill, hipsters, Justin Beiber, Fan Girls and some corporations.

At the very least, less corporations would support the bill because some (Google and Rooster Teeth for example) would be hurt more than helped.

The conclusion: The more a bill resembles SOPA, the less likely it'll pass (so far).
