New news!

China

A car crashed and burst in flames in Tiananmen Square. According to the Ministry of Public Security (The ones in charge of the Public Security Police), the occupants were Uighur Muslims and are extremists according to seized evidence. Take it very carefully with the problems the CCP has with Xinjiang.

Kenya

Kenyan police announced that five suspects were arrested as being related to the mall shootouts.

Pakistani Teen stops suicide bomber from blowing up a school, at cost of his own life.

There's the type of martyr that is needed, and not the usual assortment of assholes trying for martyrdom.

Taliban prisoners held at Bagram to be released due to insufficient evidence.

Given the recidivism rate of those held at Guantanamo then released, I wonder how many of those guys released will be back at it in short order.

Even considering the background of their late founder, it's surprising that he managed to spread this organizational model throughout the highly decentralized organization.

29 dead in Chinese knife attack.

An attack by knife-wielding men at a railway station in Kunming in south-west China has left at least 29 dead, the state news agency Xinhua says.

Another 130 people were wounded in what authorities described as an "organised, premeditated, violent terrorist attack".

Four suspects were shot dead and others are being sought, Xinhua said.

Current speculation, by Chinese netizens and the local authorities, is that this was Muslim Uighur separatists from Xinjiang in Northwest China; their relationship with the CPC is about as good as you'd expect an ethno-religious minority's relationship with a Communist government to be. Uighur separatists carried out China's first suicide-bombing, in the Northwestern Chinese town of Kuqa in 2008.

I wonder why they seem to like stabbing; perhaps it's cultural, or perhaps it's because guns and explosives are hard to come by in China. Can't really do anything but condemn the attack - regardless of how just the Uighur cause may or may not be, attacking civilians is not on.

Uigher's have a very good case for international attention and sympathy, but terror tactics like this arent going to help their cause very much.

I dont wish to make light of what has happened, but I cant help wondering what they could have done if they had brought some guns...

Probably would be worse.

IIRC, the penalty for using small arms to kill people can result in the death penalty by the use of firing squad.

A few analysts on the situation are convinced that it's not Uighur extremists, but was one done out of resentment against Han immigration.

Nigerian bus station explodes; at least 71 dead.

Looks like Boko Haram are up to their old tricks again. Worrying in the extreme that they can hit this hard and this far out of their usual area of operations. Utmost sympathies for the victims, and for Nigeria as a whole. Attacking commuters is cowardly as hell.

Looking through their history, we can agree that they're a bunch of stupid bastards.

And, looking through the history of their attacks, they'll continue doing it. It seems that they are a bit difficult to catch and stop.

[up] Apparently not — the allegations look like they're credible enough to hold a high-level investigation into them:

An investigation into an alleged hard-line Islamist takeover plot of Birmingham schools has widened, with 25 schools now under the spotlight. Birmingham City Council said it had received more than 200 reports in relation to its inquiry. It has appointed former head teacher Ian Kershaw as its chief advisor.

Anonymous claims hard-line Muslims were trying to take over the running of some city schools were made in a letter sent to local authorities last year. The 25 schools now being looked at include primaries, secondaries and academies. The 200-plus reports to the council include emails and calls from staff, parents and governors.

I'm curios, exactly what would it mean if some religious sect "took over" a school? How would that even work exactly?

[up] Nothing, in fact:

The Telegraph can disclose new details of problems revealed at Park View by a highly unusual two snap Ofsted inspections earlier this month. Lindsey Clark, the respected executive head who has an OBE for services to education, told the inspectors that she had been marginalised and that all decisions at the school were taken by Mr Alam and a small group of hardliners, including one senior teacher who has praised the al-Qaeda ideologue Anwar al-Awlaki at school assemblies. Other staff also said that they felt sidelined.

Inspectors were openly told by one senior teacher that the solution to Muslim problems would be the creation of a global Islamic state under sharia law, a key demand of extremists.
