The Sonic fandom has some really bad fanfics and some really good ones from when I last ventured into. Not many in between.

[up][up][up]Dick girls? You mean, trans characters who never had surgery but insist they're girls?

Yeah, I noticed that happens quite a lot on AO 3.

One red flag I recently discovered ... why on earth do people read a book with a rapist character in it, and their first thought is: "Let's ship him with one of the good guys". Why would you do that?

I think I have found a new low for yaoi shipping.

Kindergarten AU with a gay ship. This hurt me. It is just wrong on so many levels. It's not cute, it's freaking creepy.

Uh yeah! Children are asexual until puberty and the hormones kick in! Underage shipping is creepy unless accurately portrayed as an innocent crush. But it often doesn't stay cute and innocent... expecially if the fic doesn't have a general audiences rating.

Yeah, I mean, little kids do get crushes, but they don't work the same was as teenage crushes...

[up] That's my problem. It's played the same way as a teenage crush...when it makes no sense.

I've noticed that writers often portray young children as acting too old or too young. It's almost like they didn't do the research about children or been around them enough to know how children actually behave at a certain age. And it's not only amateur writers that do it either. When's the last time you heard a toddler say "me want cake" instead of "I want cake" or "want cake"?

I actually have 5 younger siblings of varying ages, so for me it's easier to pick up on how kids act at certain ages. My three-year-old sister, for instance, says everything normally except that she does pronounce some words differently. On the other hand, well, it varies from child to child.

I've spent time around kids and have younger relatives. I don't think all writers are the youngest in their family or the only child in a family tree of only children, so why is it hard for them to portray children accurately?

[up][up][up] (etc) Okay, about the dick girls Percy Jackson fanfic, I seriously do mean dick girls. Not even transexual characters, I LITERALLY MEAN FEMALE CHARACTERS SPONTANEOUSLY GETTING DICKS!

I never thought I would have to say that......

I never did like that trope either, especially when:

  • It makes no sense, especially when the character being given the treatment wouldn't hurt a fly.
  • No reason is given for why the character is suddenly such a Jerkass
  • Even worse, the character has Informed Wrongness or is completely in-character, making the other characters go on about how they hate them or beat them up for seemingly no reason.

If it's a character I don't like, I tend not to mind the author giving that sort of treatment to their designated Ron. The problem I usually run into with that trope is the cognitive dissonance these same author have when they make their protagonists even worse than the bashed character.

I don't mind bashing as much if it's hilarious. I think that may be my only exception, though.

Pantsing and Death Eatering both can both definitely be done well and lead to interesting/fun stories, it's just that Sturgeon's Law is a thing.

[up] The problem is that unless it's done for comedy or has a very good justification, you end up with an Author Tract. That being said, with one or both of those elements, it can work and it can work well. More so than a high school AU, which NEVER, EVER works.
