So, in the end I paid to see it. I had fun. I mean, the thing was all over the place and I kinda think Keanu reeves was added to it as an afterthought. But if you dont take stuff very seriously you will have a good time. Also, it did have some historic nods to people that know how (according to history) stuff went down. Also, the witch was hot.
ADDENUM.
Still, I dont think the movie is going to be very popular in Japan. Or maybe they get so upset they make a movie about the american war of independence with giant robots. That would be something to see.

I watched it. Know what? Ain't bad. It's pretty much just a fun, blockbuster-y supernatural adventure fighting all manner of evil threats and dark beasts For Great Justice. The two things that made it work for me is that it is truly an All-Star Cast, so despite the scarce writing, everyone makes everything work on their own charisma. And the other thing is that the supernatural monsters are really fun to watch. They're very creative in the visuals.
Amusingly as I watched the movie I noticed Reeve's character is pretty much an afterthought. The main character is clearly Oishi, the leader of the actual Ronin. In fact, after their Lord dies, Kai (Reeves) vanishes from the movie for some ten, twelve minutes as the movie focuses entirely on Oishi.
Overall, I'd say it's best just to see it as a random japanese adventure story.

Don't worry. You're not the only one. -ducks together-
Same as usual.... Wing it.
