Lots of stuff burning today. Probably dry lightning strikes from late last week.

Worse, we have near 40C temps, little to no humidity and some high winds. The weather starts improving tomorrow but that doesn't help much in the short term.

Edit:

Links right here.

And meanwhile, in Sydney, we're so humid that water drops are forming from thin air, in the sky above our heads.

-runs-

Seriously though, ouch.

Damnit, why did you bring that up.

A good friend of mine already lost their home as it is,...and you might unleash another Oakland '91 again.

^^ I live not that far from the fires. It'd take me about an hour to get there by some of the roads I know.

Which direction from the fires are you? If you're west of them you're fine. If you're south of them you'll probably be fine by the end of today. (Wind is expected to shift to the south east late today and blow the fires back in on themselves.) North and due east has no guarantees.

Well from what I've heard of the news today, the Royal Gorge Bridge site is more or less destroyed and the bridge itself got burnt. (The bridge is still there but burnt. It's 2/3 steel after all.)

^ Tell me about it. Today we have smoke in three directions, the Sun is all gold and red behind the smoke.

And you can tell it's wildfire because you can smell that it is wood smoke. That's how much smoke is here. The fire is 35 miles away at closest. (Texas Creek fire, the La Veta one is a bit further away.)

The US Forest Service has a similar sign saying the same thing in San Isabel. Everywhere else in my vicinity has aluminum/steel road signs saying "Fire Danger: Minimal/Low/Moderate/High/Very High/Extreme*

" with (currently) additional signs saying "Fire Ban In Effect".

Colorado City. South of Pueblo just below the ridge near the Huerfano County line.

I got smoke from Texas Creek, West Fork and East Peak fires all around me right now. The sky is something out of Revelations or some other apocalypse. The Sun is red and sometimes flits out of sight in the sky entirely, that's how high the smoke is here.

At least here the fires have thus far had the decency to remain safely inside peoples houses instead of rampaging dangerously around the countryside.

I remember when Yellowstone had that big fire in '88 we could smell it here in Minnesota.

^^ Fire is a native, natural and much to the chagrin of people living here required element of the American Southwest ecosystem. Fire keeps the bug and fungus infestations down which means a healthy forest in the mountains. It also clears out the trash so to speak.

If fire never occurred in the mountains they'd get overrun by pine beetle and other ailments within 100 years.
