Broaden.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanThe fanfiction folder is amusingly small.
As far as I know, AU is either the astronomical unit (i.e. distance of Earth to the sun) or the chemical symbol for gold. What on earth does that have to do with this trope?
Rhetorical, eh? ... Eight!Alternate Universe.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanHm, ok. I'd be in favor of swapping the name with its redirect (High School Spinoff) because I'm surely not the only one who doesn't know what AU means. I think we had a guideline against using abbreviations in trope names, for pretty much this reason.
Aside from that, I agree that the trope should be broadened, as suggested above.
Rhetorical, eh? ... Eight!Gonna have to vote against a rename here; the rest of the name adds context, and we have already enough on the plate.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanI think the only thing that needs to be done to broaden it is remove all mentions of fanfic from the description (and that Circular Link).
I can do it right now. Any thoughts?

I don't think broadening it to cover non-fan works would change the purpose of the setting idea.

Check out my fanfiction! Then I'll change the description to cover non-fanfiction.
It's done.

About the title. Not all spinoffs are alternate universes. All Grown Up! isn't in an alternate universe. It's the same characters after a time skip to highschool. The redirect would actually work better if we're broadening the description for that.

Except that Fanfics are not Spinoffs. At least not legitimate ones.
We need a word that covers both cases. Perhaps Transplanted To A High School Setting.

Ketchum's corollary to Clarke's Third Law: Any sufficiently advanced tactic is indistinguishable from blind luck.A little wordy. Maybe Transplanted To High School?
Has anyone shown a reason for a rename better than "there's an acronym in there"? As far as Google tells me, this is an already existing term for this sort of thing.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanIt's been used frequently in fanfic communities before TV Tropes.
Check out my fanfiction! To be fair, "acronyms" are explicitly spelled out as a reason to rename, on our policy/guideline page about the subject.
Rhetorical, eh? ... Eight!Said policy page also cites "sufficient inbound links" and "existing term" as reasons against a rename. I could see adding a few redirects, though.

"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanI have no problem with the current title. Would that help if we made a redirect to High School Alternate Universe?
Sounds good.
There's also the name of the shot down YKTTW, Recycled In High School, to consider if a rename is actually needed.
Though for the record, my only problem was with the description saying it's about fanfiction and examples being canonical works.

Added redirect.
Check out my fanfiction!Looks like we're done here.
"If you aren't him, then you apparently got your brain from the same discount retailer, so..." - Fighteer
As pointed out in this YKTTW (shot down becuase it's a duplicate of High School AU), it specifically about fanfictions involving the characters in high school, not spin offs or canonical shows, yet also contains examples like All Grown Up and planned but failed shows like Gotham High (and even uses its artwork for the page image).
Tropes Are Not Narrow, so I think it's high time to broaden the description to include all shows transplanting the characters to high school, not just fanfiction.
