A few bad snowclones here....

Three completely unrelated tropes with very closely related names. If that's not bad snowcloning, I don't know what is.

Alas, Poor Yorick is the one I would want the name to stay with. The pose which goes with that line is widely known, and it's the original quote. Alas, Poor Villain and Alas, Poor Scrappy need changing, methinks. Alas, Poor Scrappy strikes me as the worst, because it's not even necessarily to do with death, it depends on another trope to make sense, and really the name is not closely related to the trope. It's not non-indicative, but it's not as good.

Problem, of course, is links.

Which means that although I think APY is the best, it would also be the easiest to rename. APV would take lots of manpower, and APS has inbounds from who knows where. Nonetheless, I've tagged this thread with APS, since we have to start somewhere. The tag can be changed if necessary.

I currently have no ideas for new names for any of these, by the way.

Anywho. Thoughts? Which should be renamed? Should any be renamed?

Alas, Poor Scrappy and Alas, Poor Villain are both when a character, who is a scrappy/villain, gets a "feel sorry for" moment once they get off. Alas, Poor Yorick seems to be the same, but for heads(?).

APV was already under a wick cleanup, so I am not warming towards rerunning one.

APY has nothing to do with how people cared for the head, just that an in-universe character is mourning while holding the head. Given it's the (very famous) trope namer, changing that would be unfortunate. At the same time, I don't think that the name is an issue with the other two, even with their greater number of wicks (the issue is the subjectivity of the trope).

I say leave them all. Even if their names are similar, it's not leading to any confusion.

I actually see the connection between them. All are death tropes and both APV and APS are moments with the character being pitied or mourned for. APY is a Stock Pose, and mourning was relevant in the Trope Namer.

I would be for renaming only if there was serious misuse.

Is there any actual misuse?

If there was, the first action should be to clean up the misuse, not rename three whole tropes.

I could see Alas, Poor Yorick renamed, sinc eit has usage stats in the low 100s, but the other should stay (at least until we find manpower for such a rename. We don't have it ATM)

They have good stats. The snowcloning is unfortunate, but the snowclones have a common meaning behind them, even if it has nothing to do with the original phrase. And I'm loathe to change Alas, Poor Yorick. We should leave them.

So far, I've not seen any convincing reason to change them.

I haven't checked for misuse. A wild guess says there isn't.

Eh, if everyone a connection and doesn't see the snowcloning as sufficient reason to rename, then we can do nothing and lock this — which sure is easier. I'll holler later today.

That was the amazing part. Things just keep going.
