Ambiguous Name: A Planet Named Zok get usage counts

1 Larkmarn, Wed, 5th Jun '13 5:37:30 AM Relationship Status: Hello, I love you

Came from this IP thread

So there seem to be a few tropes at play here. The description and name are clearly about a planetary version of A Villain Named Zrg, but the image suggestion, quote, and some of the examples are about "Description + generic suffix."

As-is, one I Per's comment that it just seems like a list of fictional planet names rings a bit true, especially if there's misuse this early (it's a young trope), with examples like Trisol (a planet with three suns) getting added that doesn't even fit either description.

Gentleman Troper!
I think this page convolutes (at least) two tropes. "Planet name that sounds vaguely like Zrg" is a trope, sister trope to A Villain Named Zrg. "Planet that is a descriptive noun with a generic suffix" (like tropolon or funktron or swampica) is a different trope. "Planet name that I think sounds cool" is not a trope.

To me, this appears to be about naming a Planet of Hats. If a planet's hat is cowardice, then whether it's named Bunnylar or Rabbitron should make no difference. Planet names of "descriptive name + suffix" appear all the time in parody series, such as Futurama (Wormulon, Amphibios, Igloopiter), Sin Fest (Orphantron, Furrytopia), Earthworm Jim (Insectika), or Space Quest (Pestulon).

So I suggest restricting this trope to "planet names that sound like zrg", and YKTTW'ing a new trope for "descriptive noun + suffix" planet names.

+1 to Spark's suggestion.

I also agree with Spark.

I agree with that idea, providing that we have some examples and a description for the trope to YKTTW.

In the YKTTW, could we expand it to not just planets but also countries that have names like Tropeyland? Or do we have that one already?

No, the other one.
Doesn't sound like a bad idea.

But what about the existing definition, which basically reads (to me) as Xtreme Kool Letterz for planets?

(IOW, I'm not at all sure the characterization of the trope in the OP is correct, which just highlights the problems it has.)

No, the other one.
Well, here it also has the narrative purpose of making the name sound alien.

The current trope basically is a subtrope of Xtreme Cool Letterz, yes, as is A Villain Named Zrg.

I think I've already provided sufficient examples to YKTTW the other part, and I do believe that noun-plus-suffix countrynames are the same trope.

If no one else does it, I'm going to make a YKTTW for it tonight or tomorrow. Any thoughts on names? I'm thinking Descriptionland.

Why not Tropelon? Or Hatulonia/Hatulfrey/Hatulon? Either way, the current page quote should go there.

zzz...
[up] I'd say something like "Planet Descriptulon" - it probably should have "planet" in it to be clear, and probably incorporate the word "descriptive" or something similar to define the trope clearly. "Tropelon" falls into the "'trope' as placeholder" trap, and incorporating "hat" in the name would probably confuse people who don't know about Planet of Hats.

[up][up] [tup] Planet Descriptulon? Now that concise, clear and witty. I like it a lot.

But would it also cover countries? In fiction, is this primarily used for countries or for cities or for planets? Do we want sister tropes for Nounburg, Nounistan, and Nounulon?

No, the other one.
We already do have the tropes Descriptiveville and Premiseville.

If we want separate tropes or not depends on if Duckburg should be on the same page as Cybertron. I think separate tropes might be an idea.

I think that we are splitting too many hairs then. No reason why Hatron and Descriptiveville should be on separate pages.

Add some redirects, maybe.

I see that Descriptive Ville already covers e.g. countries, and it's not that long, so I would be fine with it covering planets as well.

Eh.. it doesn't really mesh that well with the pre-existing examples. [tdown] to that suggestion.

Shall we crowner it, then? Some people argue that "descriptively named planet" is the same trope as "descriptively named town, country, or region", and some people argue that it's not.
