Duplicate Trope: What Exactly Is His Job get usage counts

51 Another Duck, Wed, 12th Jun '13 4:20:31 AM from Stockholm Relationship Status: Chocolate!
No, the other one.
I kind of got lost in what the actual argument was about, and in which direction, so I just tried to word it as I saw it. So yes, that's neither trope.
Check out my fanfiction!
So what still needs to be done? Are there still examples to sort, YKTT Ws to launch, tropes to rename?

I think What, Exactly, Is His Job? needs a rename, since I now see it's a separate trope from Obliquely Obfuscated Occupation, but it sees a great deal of misuse as the latter since... well, "job" makes people think of employment. I'd vote What Exactly Is His Role, but that's dialog and I don't know if that gets grandfathered in.

Given that we are talking about changing the other trope. I moved the tag.

Make correct Laconic entries for both tropes and I'll try to come up with some names.

I vote we change What, Exactly, Is His Job? to something like Unclear Team Role and turn What, Exactly, Is His Job? into a redirect of Obliquely Obfuscated Occupation.

Should I just drop the third trope into ykttw?

What third trope?

61 Rethkir, Mon, 12th Aug '13 10:18:45 AM from the gap between dimensions Relationship Status: Singularity
  1. character has a role in the group, but no one knows what it is. — Unclear Team Role
  2. character works somewhere, but no one knows where it is or what they do. — Obliquely Obfuscated Occupation
  3. character is employed with the group, but no one knows what they work on. — Sounds like What, Exactly, Is His Job?

I don't think the third one is splittable. I'd fold those in to one of the other two depending on context.

No, that third thing is not splittable.

From the second page:

The jobs [] cover broad areas of work. The character/person may be doing a lot of work, but the job description would cover a lot of activities. Often left vague.

In regards to @61, #1 and #3 sound too close for comfort.

I agree with Jovian @ 62. I still support my suggestion in post 57.

We have sandboxes with the two tropes:
  1. Sandbox. What Exactly Is His Job
  2. Sandbox.Obliquely Obfuscated Occupation
Larkman has proposed we rename trope #1, and make What, Exactly, Is His Job? a redirect to trope #2.

We still haven't decided what to do with this trope:
  • The job covers broad areas of work. The character/person may be doing a lot of different duties, but the job description is vague, or would cover a lot of activities.
I asked if I should dump it into YKTTW because people keep forgetting about that trope.

I've restored Sandbox. What Exactly Is His Job, for what it's worth.

I guess that switching in the sandboxes and then crownering a rename would be proper.

Made a few changes to the sandboxes. Mostly reorganizing stuff that was copied straight from the original Main/ page that didn't really fit the new description.
Is everyone okay with the current sandboxes?

Yep, look good to me. But are we still going to rename What, Exactly, Is His Job??

This is the last time I'll clock this. If this isn't finished within three days, it's going to the morgue.

So for a potential rename for What, Exactly, Is His Job?, how about Unclear Team Role? It's clinical as hell, but it's at least clear.

Here: made a crowner.

Page Action: What Exactly Is His Job
12th Nov '13 5:30:47 PM
What would be the best way to fix the page?
At issue:
The tropes Obliquely Obfuscated Occupation and What Exactly Is His Job have had their definitions refined to better explain their different roles in the story.

  • "Oblique" is when the other characters don't know the job their friend does.
  • "What exactly" is when their friend works with the other characters, but their role within the team is ambiguous.
