A while ago MTV announced that it may be may be creating a show or miniseries based on Scream. Personally, I thought this would go nowhere, though just a few days they brought it up again, actually greenlighting the pilot, which Wes Craven is rumored to be directing.

Anyone have any thoughts?

Not really sure how to feel about this. I'm one of those people that thinks the Scream series should have ended with the 2nd film {The 3rd and 4th ones wern't terrible, it's just that they wern't anywhere near as good as the first two and they had quite a bit of flaws IMO}, and I don't really know how you could make a full Tv Series on something like this without it eventually getting repeatitive.

This is not helped by the fact that last I checked, Kevin Willamson {The writer of the first two films and one of the writers for the 4th film} is done with the Scream series for good, which is why I'm also skeptical of Scream 5 if it ever gets made. But I'll at least give the pilot a decent try if does actually get developed and finished. Maybe it'll be good, maybe it'll be crap. We'll just have to wait and see.

If only this was on HBO or Showtime.

Why is this on MTV of all things?

I don't know how Scream would work at all as a series... Scream's strong points are smart acknowledgement of the Slasher Genre and its tropes as well as intense fights between the characters an the killer; where they're usually an even match.

But... as a series??? I don't think the pacing will work at all and...

Let's just say the mention of a 'Bi-curious daughter' and the added fact of MTV's new show 'Faking It'... It has me not very happy at all.

I love the Scream series; I love each movie... except the third, but everyone hates the third one. I thought the fourth movie was really good, intense, and had the same energy of the original in an updated setting. I'd rather see 5 than a TV Series; particularly since MTV is the LAST channel to know how to adapt a previously established series into a show.

I'm a critical person but I'm a nice guy when you get to know me. Now, I should be writing.

Considering shows like Hannibal, Bates Motel, and American Horror Story, I could see a Scream TV Show being approached as a play on horror TV shows like those... but I don't think they've been established in the public consciousness long enough for it to actually work.

Yeah. Horror TV Shows haven't been around long enough to have cleche's (rules) specific to that formula.

I feel like this could turn out like Harper's Island very quickly. I mean, I did enjoy Harper's at times, but the writing was bad and the body count was absurd for how long it went without notice. And considering Scream originally killed off the Principal JUST so there was another death at the mid-point... I feel like they'll kill once-per-episode and we're going to run into issues quickly from just a first season body count, let alone if this continues past a single season.

Also, what the heck is the relationship between the show and the movies? I didn't see Sydney mentioned or anything.

I'm a critical person but I'm a nice guy when you get to know me. Now, I should be writing.

And to get the extras out of the house by putting the body on display.

You don't entirely need the Principal to die for the plot to make sense; Any number of excuses for the extras to leave could have been used. I remember reading form somewhere (Or maybe it was DVD Commentary?) that said the Principal was killed purely because of the gap between Sydney being attacked at home and the endgame.

I like Teen Wolf on MTV, so I think they're okay to do another movie to TV adaptation. However, I feel like trying to do Scream as a series would end up like Pretty Little Liars where nothing happens as they try to solve the mystery. Since it's TV and not a movie they can't just kill most of the cast like they can in a movie, but then you end up with very little drama. Or you care about the characters and have to keep watching them die. I'd give it shot at least.

[up]Ugh. Pretty Little Liars is full of the biggest dumbasses in the world. I only watch it because that's how me and a long distance friend connect and, after 4 years, those damn girls have more to lose NOT contacting the police than playing A's stupid ass game and the entire show had a one, maybe two season premise.

[up][up]Yes and No. A is a conspiracy of multiple people... I think... The logic in that show is shit.

Necroing this because news:

So apparently they couldn't use the Ghostface mask that's usually seen in the movies. So they had to come up with a new one from scratch.

According to Wes Craven, it actually plays into the story. The other executives said this:

Commenting on the decision to revamp Ghostface's look in the series, exec producer Jamie Paglia (Eureka) says, “The [original] mask is so iconic. If you were to have that mask in a television series, but you weren’t following any of the characters [from the original], I believe that would be misleading the audience."

Exec producer Jill Blotevogel describes the new mask as having Michael Myers and Jason Voorhees influences, but stresses that it is "first and foremost" evocative of the original Ghostface from 1996, saying, "It’s sort of a reinvention while also paying homage."

...

I personally don't mind it (in fact, it's kinda growing on me), but I'll just leave this here. Do whatever you wish with it:

  • #NotMyGhostface

And since it wasn't posted here already, here's the trailer for it.

Guess it ain't Scream if it didn't have the characters talking about how screwy the idea of the show is, huh?

Bump.

Geez, does everyone have so little faith in this show that they won't even drop a comment on anything like the new mask or the trailer?

No cheers of "Hooray for change" or cries of "They Changed It, Now It Sucks!, and I don't want to live on this planet anymore because of it"?

...Dang.

There was no need to change the mask, its barely even Scream at this point, and I don't think there are that many who will disagree.

It comes down to a question of 'What is Scream?'

Is it Ghostface and their mask? Is it the never ending deconstructions of the genre? Or is it Sydney Prescott??? For me, it has always been the deconstructions, but Ghostface is the hallmark icon of the series.

Its classic at this point. Like Jason's mask or Harry Potter's Lightning Bold Scar (even if I never liked it) or The Phantom of the Opera's mask. They all symbolize their respective series' and its just not something you change.

So, now we come to a new question entirely; This TV Series doesn't have Woodsboro or Sydney or even Ghostface at this point, so WHY is it Scream anyway???

[up] Well, it looks like they're sticking with the deconstructions...

Also, I wanted to say that it's not so much they wanted to but they had to because the people who own the mask were being hard-ons and/or they were at risk of being Screwed by the Lawyers, but then the more I looked back, the more it seemed that they voluntarily did choose to not use the original mask.

...Eh?

EDIT: Ooh! It just hit me! If they get Roger L Jackson to voice New!Ghostface, maybe there can be a redeemable quality to this!

[up] Wait, why not have Roger Jackson do a Role Reprisal of Ghostface? Wouldn't that make this show worth watching?

Because they've already screwed up on a lot of other things, or so it feels at this point, (Watching the trailer, I'm not sure what's supposed to pull me in) that One Good does not right the other wrongs. The show looks like a sinking ship and Jackson's inclusion may patch some things up, but there's still an ocean flooding in right now.

So. I don't suppose anyone's seen this yet?

Series premieres tomorrow at 10 pm...if anyone is even remotely interested...

Really though, I've never seen any of the Scream movies, but this still manages to net me into suspension.
