Apparently, one of the complaints is that "Hollande is trying to fundamentally change society." In short, one big Appeal to Tradition.

It's also the main attack angle of our right-wing politicians, when they're not slipping and accusing the other side of "murdering children" with gay adoption.

...Nah, there's little to no abortion debate in France. This makes the States look so backwards from here.

Anyway, tomorrow is the final vote, but the "antis" have already said they'll complain to the Constitutional Council. If they complain over the law being passed without a public referendum, according to the left wing it's doomed because:

1. There is no provision in the Constitution for a referendum for this category of political matters
2. They can thank the right wing for item 1!!!!! (cackles madly with pants on head) Apparently the left wing wanted such a constitutional provision, but the then-right wing majority didn't. I'm thinking of petards and hoisting now...

Well, France has some serious social problems if opposition party people and politicians (there was fisticuffs in parliament recently) act like this when an elected government does what it promised to.

Seems like the French parliament needs the solution we got in the house of commons: two lines on the floor the party members have to stay behind.

What little understanding I had of French government comes from Les Miserables. So I'm just going to pretend I understand what that means.

Why is marriage and adoption law part ofthe same bill anyway? They are two dissimilar concepts despite reflecting the same social values. Not that irrelevant riders are anything new.

I don't remember, but I know for a time there was female Homosexual Reproduction on the bill (it was pulled from the bill because it reduced its chances to pass), so there's a good chance adoption is on it as well.

Even if it's not people will see it as then next step of the Slippery Slope.

And I don't see what's so surprising in grouping gay marriage and gay adoption. "People marry to have children", after all.

I had hoped human cloning wouldn't became a reality in my life time but I didn't hold my breath.

Why?

It'd allow infertile couples to have actual biologically related to them children.

You'd beable to clone organs so that less people die on organ transplant lines. etc

x4 + ninjas: Don't get too eager. I don't remember what the law said, for all I know it could just be "IVF is now legal for lesbian couples too" with a good ol' third-party source of DNA.

Be careful: While "Bien fait" is a literal translation of "well done", it's actually our idiom for "had it coming". You probably mean "Bien Joué" ("Well played"), which has no such connotations.

Jeez, violent protests? I really hope their fights don't result in any deaths or serious injury. I also hope that France doesn't give into the protests and holds strong on this.

There really thinking this will negatively effect the family there too huh? It's not like violent homophobia hurts the family at all.

When they say they have concerns about the family, how come they never consider that gay people have families as well?

Because that would require rational thought?

Because those aren't real families. They're two people reinforcing each other's unfortunate mental disorder and/or/corrupting any children unlucky enough to be nearby.

Homophobic belief systems may be deeply creepy, damaging, and often factually inaccurate, but they're generally internally consistent.

So basically, "if they aren't like my family something is wrong with them."?

Essentially, yes. If you're not a straight member of a wholesome, nuclear, mom+dad+2 kids family, then you shouldn't exist. Never mind the fact that a good number of them aren't in wholesome families like that themselves.

I hope that these protests die down after a few weeks. Then maybe they'll see that gay people aren't a threat to traditional marriage, that it has no affect on their lives, and that maybe they'll learn to be a little more tolerant.
