It's better than not doing it.
'All he needs is for somebody to throw handgrenades at him for the rest of his life...'I don't think volunteer work will help too much.
Speaking as someone who has been hunting for a co-op for over a year, it may help. But do you have a full degree in something? I'd recommend getting at least an associate's, if you only have a high school diploma and if you have the money to go back to community college. But honestly, one of the only ways to get your foot in the door these days is to know someone. College isn't totally about learning, it's where you make connections. A lot of schools- especially community colleges -also have career centers where you can get access to local jobs, career fairs, and help with resumes and interviews. I only got my co-op because my degree advisor keeps in touch with grads, one of which is a hiring manager at a local freight-tracking company.
"Jack, you have debauched my sloth."
I recently signed up to volunteer to help out with a marathon going on the 18th of May, since I can't seem to find work. How good does something like that look on a resume since no one seems to take my job training with a school to-work program seriously since I have Asperger's and they thought that'd be the best option to get me work experience(I did it right after I got outta HS with 18 college credits in criminal justice in addition from going to community college while in HS junior/senior year.)
