The way I figure it, Elena's house is a bit out of the way, so the school busses don't go there. And since her mom is at SEED she can't get a ride home or to school.

I think Maya should be stationed in the base (let's say SEED provided lodgings for her) and that she wanders around the school because being stationed with people that are mostly above her age is depressing.

Mikoto had a punny name? Yes, that name was deliberately chosen for puns. Maybe. I can't remember. I just like the name.
Also, dunno. Presumably, schools don't have shrines built in them, though.

Miko-to? Well, 'Burke' IIRC is a kind of fortified structure, which seemed to work a little bit with Elena's membrane.
In that case, Elena still has to walk back and forth.
I wonder if Maya works with the elder Burke. Dr Burke is probably pretty involved in the Magitech project, I think, and she likely looks a lot like her daughter...
