Re: Self-troping: I will admit, it can be fun (I listed a bunch on my page, though I admit, I did that a while ago), but listing certain tropes about yourself can just make you seem pretentious.

Even as a mental health professional I cannot buy that. Sorry. Some "weird" habits are often excuses to justify being a jerk.

I don't think i've ever seen anyone use "weird" as their excuse to be a jerk (aside from the "IT'S IN MY CULTURE SO FUCK OFF" attitude, but "culture" has this tendency to not be in the same category as "weirdness" for whatever reason) but I have seen a lot of people that try to use mental disorders as their justifications for being jerks (and to be completely honest, I can't really see a reason to care if they really do have it or not, since, regardless of if they do or not, the truth is that they are jerks either way), or rather, the reason why they think they should be entitled to act that way without others getting annoyed by them. (There's also those people that use "I'm a troll" as their excuse to be a jerk without deserving other's irritation at them...but that's directly contradictory, since the point of trolls is to raise irritation from others, causing responses they find amusing. I can't see any reason why one should have any complaints if they were to become the most hated person in the universe if their goal directly involved such a thing to begin with.)

On the "tropes to describe oneself" thing, I don't really see how it's any different from using any other words to describe someone, like "X person is funny yet cruel" they're all just labels with limited definitions anyway.

It depends what tropes? I mean, I listed Blind Without 'Em and The Illegible on my page because they're pretty value-neutral and factual. It is a fact: I have terrible eyesight and abominable handwriting.

Ones like Brilliant, but Lazy or Badass Longcoat just come off like you're bragging about how awesome you are, in addition to being tropes that don't necessarily make sense outside of applying them to fiction.

Be not afraid...

Personally I don't see how Brilliant, but Lazy is anything brag about in the first place.

'I could cure cancer but I rather play video games'.

Geez thanks people. The Badass Longcoat at least owned the coat.

[up][up]I knew I was forgetting one!! Badass Longcoat I always dread seeing on people's pages. Especially when they include a picture of themselves in one, thinking they look like Dick Tracy but instead just looking like a dork.

It just baffles me though why people think that if they describe themselves with tropes that are cool in fiction it'll make them cool in reality.

Those are still just limited labels anyway, though. Using the trope Brilliant, but Lazy and saying "I could be totally awesome at this thing, but I just don't feel like doing it." is the same thing, the former just happens to be a name that was designed for a pattern in fiction.

Someone who lists themselves with Badass Longcoat is also the same as "I think I look badass in longcoats, like how those guys in the movie did." while the former is just the name designed for the fictional pattern.

It doesn't seem to need to be actually true when I consider some of the examples i've seen where it is listed on a character's trope page while also mentioning "Character X thinks he is this" or something, though.

That wouldn't be a straight example of the trope, though. That'd be either attempting to invoke the trope or discussing the trope.
