Well, after years of no information, Eidos Montreal has finally officially unvieled the newest entry in the Thief series... titled Thief.

That's kind of confusing. But still, there's a ton of information that just got revealed in Game Informer.

This is probably my most-anticipated game at the moment. Been playing the old games and I really love them.

Fanfiction I hate.

"In previous Thief games, Garrett used a rope arrow to reach high points. Now he has the Claw, a throwable grapple that attaches to certain points in the environment and allows Garrett to get out of sight quickly."

"Focus lights up the screen and highlights pipes you can climb or candles you can put out to darken the room. As you upgrade your Focus you will get a bigger radius of things to see. We have a fingerprints system that will give you hints on which drawers are worthwhile to look in. Every drawer in the room is accessible, but you use your Thief skills like CSI to figure out where the valuables are."

Also there will be takedowns, the ability to be more action focused (The interview basically says "We want you to be a thief but aren't forcing you to be a thief"), and less magic in this reboot and no hammers.

Another gritty(er) reboot...

The article even goes "How do you make a stealth game appeal to the modern audience constantly bombarded by fast paced franchises like Call of Duty, Uncharted, and God of War" sad

That sounds a lot like the Arkham Series...

Apparently they're cutting out a lot of the lore as well. No undead, burricks, Hammerites, Magic, and Water Arrows are getting a rename.

And it's got the same problem Human Revolution had with the mix of first and person perspectives, and cinematic takedown bullshit.

The lore dump is the part that gets me though.

Yeah the removal of the supernatural stuff is what pisses me off.

Sigh, another franchise I loved going the way of a gritty "realistic" reboot...

Also everyone says it looks like Dishonored, which apparently is a good thing...

Oh, and "magic" includes the light gem. Why are they abandoning one of the series central mechanics?

No wonder it's not called Thief 4 anymore.

Because its not gritty and realistic enough.

And sorry for being my pessimistic negative self as usual but I'm getting a wee bit tired of reboots.

I think questions of realism have impacted the design decisions, but it strikes me that it's out of a desire to speed up gameplay, as part of the Stealth genre's movement away from emergent narrative and towards prepackaged standardised gaming experiences.

But yeah, I've never understood the problems people have with a light mechanic. If you blend into the shadows using your supernatural powers of suggestion and preternatural mad skillz, that's entirely sensical. It's the same kind of logic that thinks water arrows needed to be "fixed", because how can you have an arrow that's made of water!?

Seems pretty clear that they're taking the magic out of the setting, which I dunno about.

Edit: The most/only hilarious/interesting thing about that article is the clear inability of the author to pin down Xiao's gender. Just use "ze", idiot! Also, Asian influence is surprising.

The arrows had crystals in them that exploded into water.

It just saddens me that stealth is all but gone because gamers want fast paced action now.

Didn't Deadly Shadows end with a kind of The Magic Goes Away thing?

Glyph Magic was sealed, rendering the Keeper's powerless. That's about it.

It didn't retroactively eliminate the Hammerites from the city, eradicate the world's exotic fauna or turn the Keepers into a shady organisation of thieves...

Exactly. This isn't Thief 4 anymore. Its Thief because a reboot always has to use the original title.

Did you know that sneaking, that moving carefully and gingerly while navigating enemy installations, is girly, and being girly is wrong?

From the article:

Some of the early concept stuff had Garret a little too soft in his approach...I had a lot of problems in the early focus tests because I had turned his movements up too much toward the female spectrum.

Oh Hai, Misogyny.

As Deadly Shadows wrapped things up, I'm fine with a reboot.

I don't think that I will like this particular reboot, though.

... I was cautiously optimistic before I read some of these posts. :/

The removal of magic, the undead and various elements of the previous lore rather disappoint me.

Narg, the undead were very effective elements in the first three games — I remember having a reflexive tendency to hit the "reload" button just before being hit by zombies in the first game, think that the Hammer Haunts were wonderfully atmospheric and I suspect that most of we who have played it remember the Shalebridge Cradle, for example.

[edit]
As much as I'd like a continuation of the original trilogy, I think that I have no real problem with a reboot. As Nyarly says, however, I fear that I'll not like this reboot... :/

You ever read that issue of Transmetropolitan where Spider's publisher Mitchell mentions that Spider once wrote a single article filled with the word "Fuck" repeated 800 times and tried to pass it off as his response to the presidential election he was covering? That's kind of what my first post looked like.

EDIT: But in all seriousness fuck these [insert disgusting thing here]-swallowing shit-for-brains developers and publishers who want to make an "epic for the win XD" game rather than an actual sequel to the game, fuck the journos who'll hype this game to high heaven despite it being a colossal turd made for the Lowest Common Denominator, and fuck anyone who buys it.

Honestly, I'm not bothered by it. Thief ended with Deadly Shadows, so the thought of a fourth game was pretty odd in the first place. Since it took so long, I never even expected it to happen. The sheer reality of it is underwhelming. Somehow, I can't even really care much about it, even if it's going good. Now that it doesn't seem to be that, I can't even be annoyed about it. I don't understand it myself, but it seems that my mind is unable to accept that Thief didn't end with DS (even though it actually did, considering that this one is a reboot).

So I just found out that the sexist I quoted above is the narrative director. So that's fucked.

@Kevo-O, that's really not improved. It's still about dick-sucking, even if less people are into it.

It's just an appropriation of the take-down system from Human Revolution, isn't it?

Apparently you use focus to select "points" on a guard and the more points you select the more devestating the attack.

So yeah, we dishonored now!

Also there's a navigation beacon to tell you where to go. Because gamers nowadays can't figure shit out for themselves.
