Well, thank you for keeping it alive and keeping me updated during my absence.
So, to start, I think these are salvageable for advertising.
- There was a radio commercial in the mid-1970s for Stephen King's novel The Shining. It begins with the sound of a whimpering boy and an angry father knocking on his door. The knock intensifies to pounding and the voice rises to a yell, then drops suddenly to a gutteral "Open this doorrrrrrr..."
- A recent American PSA for the adult pertussis (whooping cough) vaccine uses thirty seconds of a sick baby coughing and wheezing and choking and sounding like it's suffocating to get its message across. Even worse, it shows a woman telling you that holding a baby could give the baby the illness in a way that makes it look like she just came back from a future where 90% of humanity was wiped out by pertussis while fazing in and out of leering, scratchy yellow screen. It ends with the last baby cough echoing off the way a scream does in drama when it's the last noise that person ever makes. It seemed almost to be saying "Don't ever touch your children or you will kill them.
- A radio ad from about four years ago about whooping cough basically explained in great detail what you would go through, including how you just kept coughing and coughing and coughing, all while trying to breathe...
- An ad which seems to air on [adult swim] a lot about the drug Avandia being linked to serious side effects and now people who were affected or knew someone that was can get financial compensation. The guy talking is deadpan and has a creepy low-pitched voice, and repeats "DEATH, HEART ATTACK, OR STROKE" at least three or four times. There's been at least a couple of times this troper has seen it air twice in a row, too.
- Apaches: Say what you will about the rest of this classic public information film, but the hysterical screams of the girl dying an excruciating death from chemical poisoning will be with you until the day you die. Here’s the clip — it begins at 17:48. You Have Been Warned.
Obviously "This Troper" has to go and such but does anyone agree that these are salvageable?
Modified Ura-nage, Torture RackIt has to be In-Universe.
Video Games is done, now.
Link to TRS threads in project mode here.Clock is set. What still needs to be done here?
Cleaning these four subpages:
- Anime & Manga
- Film
- Literature
- Live-Action TV
And removing the trope from YMMV.
Link to TRS threads in project mode here.Checked Live-Action, haven't done the crosswicks.
Editz: Lit, too. Still no crosswicking.

Link to TRS threads in project mode here.Since the Video Game Cleanup, the examples related to The Suffering have been removed, and I'm not sure if they should be re-added or dropped, and if they should be re-added, how to phrase them so that they're objective. Allow me to quote from the YMMV page for the game, where they're still listed.
- Hell Is That Noise: chink-clink-clank-clankschrarlclankclinkCLIKCLIKCLIKCLIK-SHLINK!
- The sound of a Gorger feeding is known to turn the stomachs of the hardiest players.
- The Creeper's voice would be terrifying even if his dialogue in the game was about fluffy puppies instead of his exploits as an abusive pimp and misogynistic serial killer.
They're all things that are intentionally designed to be disturbing and frightening — two enemy-related audio cues designed to clue you in that they're there even when you can't see them, and the voice of one of the series' villains. The last one is the one I'm most iffy on, but the first two seem to fit, especially since I'm almost certain some characters in-game express fear or disgust at the sound of the Gorgers, though it's been a bit since I've played. There are a few others that were deleted for being phrased as Audience Reactions, but could be valid under the current video game guidelines if they were rewritten to be more objective — Creepy/Distinctive audio cues informing you of the presence of horror-oriented enemies when they're not necessarily visible. (Drones from Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena, various Necromorph-related sounds from Dead Space, etc.)
"That's ridiculous. What would a walrus do with a magic bag?" PokeamidaLook at Scare Chord. That's for scaring the audience.
Link to TRS threads in project mode here.Except that the Video Game section specifically broadens the definition very slightly (explicitly including audio cues for offscreen enemies used to alert to their presence and increase tension) because of the medium's frequent blurring of (main) character and audience, as well as the prominence of tropes like Heroic Mime that mean that characters won't necessarily comment on a noise that would otherwise qualify. If you want to dispute this medium-specific broadening of the definition, that's fine, and worthwhile, but as the trope currently stands, it is in there... and as I mentioned, I believe one of the sounds mentioned is explicitly identified as frightening/disgusting by in-game characters, though I'd have to replay to make sure.
"That's ridiculous. What would a walrus do with a magic bag?" PokeamidaIf the definition is expanded for Videogames, then I screwed up.

I wrote it.
Link to TRS threads in project mode here. Not to be rude, then, but I'd say you screwed up. The phrasing used does seem to suggest a slightly broader definition for the sake of unique elements of Video Games as compared to other media, and if that wasn't your intention, you may want to reword and clarify it.
"That's ridiculous. What would a walrus do with a magic bag?" PokeamidaOkay, I cleaned the video game section of things that do not relate to characters or happenings in game. (As in, stuff people found creepy but there was nothing associated with the sound...which interestingly leaves a baby cry, which is not scary at all but annoys in game characters)
Modified Ura-nage, Torture RackWell, all I think that may need fixing still is the western animation section. Or is there something else still glaring?
Edit: I take that back, just looking at the anime and manga section there are a ton of examples that do not relate to the characters or setting at all or are not explained. I was told audience response did not matter, it had to be in universe some way. I suppose video games might be more lax if the character the player controls can react to an "out of universe" sound but that should not apply anywhere else. I removed a few examples already but Crazysamaratin, were you not cleaning that page?

Modified Ura-nage, Torture RackOkay, that is done. Now I just need someone to go through the Western Animation section and we can removed the Your Mileage May Vary Banner.
Modified Ura-nage, Torture RackThe wicks also need cleaning, otherwise the banner has to stay.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanI had started from the bottom.
Link to TRS threads in project mode here.Oh okay. I saw live action tv was cleaned out nicely, we probably will not even need separate pages when it is all finished. I guess I will start with the end wicks
Modified Ura-nage, Torture RackCan we have an extended clock, or perhaps, just put this one in sleep mode rather than an out an out lock? Fire Fox was my preferred browser for editing this wiki but it has become a pain under the current script issues, so I have been spending more of my TV tropes time trying to fix those. At least until someone figures out what is up with them.
Modified Ura-nage, Torture RackInternet Explorer works fine for me.
Internet explorer is not getting script freezes but it is still managing to lock me on a page due a lot of backlogs I cannot explain that I do not get with Fire Fox.
But enough complaining, I cannot figure out what is wrong either way so I will just get back to the wicks.
Edit: Don't remove these as they are good.
- The Faceless (web comic, come to think of it, most works that do not actually have audio usually have better examples)
- Valkyria Chronicles II
- Vanish (technically correct but probably needs more explaining)
- Vector Vendetta
- VHS
- Most Wonderful Sound/Videogames
- Make Me Wanna Shout
- Video Games
- Video Games
- Walking Tech Bane
- Nausea Fuel (video games)
- Video Games: Technically correct but needs more context
- Virtual On
- Vinesauce
- What Measure Is A Non Human
- Who Wants To Be A Millionaire
- Worm Worldwide Threats
- Visible Invisibility
- The X-com pages
- War Of The Worlds
- Yu Gi Oh ZEXAL
- Your Princess Is in Another Castle!
- You Awaken In Razor Hill
- Will Rock
- What a Piece of Junk
- Wolf Guy Wolfen Crest

Modified Ura-nage, Torture RackWhere are we at on this?
Wick cleanup. Over 1k, so we're stalling a little.
The trope also needs removing from YMMV, because the definition is not subjective anymore.

Link to TRS threads in project mode here.I got behind on it, I admit but is anyone else wick checking?
Modified Ura-nage, Torture Rack
Crown Description:
Vote up for yes, down for no.
What about splittimg the trope into two of them? One for subjective, and one for In-Universe. From Cider's post, it's a 50-50 in subjective-In-Universe.
EDIT: Most Terrifying Sound is a redirect to Hell Is That Noise. That would work perfectly for the split.
