Justice Avengers: Jump City at Dusk

Sword-nanigans

The Swordsman was more than slightly surprised by Wolverine's metal bone intercepting his sword but recovered quickly by shoving his foot into Wolverine's chest and shoving him away, steel dragging across... admantium, although this did leave him open to attack for a moment.

"I'll be honest," the purple-clad swordsman quipped, "The man who hired us said that only one of you would have claws." By this point, White Tiger had already disarmed and knocked out The Stingaree. Wildcat disoriented Silver Samurai with a blow to the temple with the butt of his blade, and then rammed the red katana through his gut.

'Jesus, James!' White Tiger exclaimed in shock.

"He'll live," Wildcat assured her gruffly as he yanked the sword out of the other man's gut. "If he receives proper medical treatment in the next two hours."

Ice to See You

Mastermind calmly held out a hand as Firestar and Marvel Boy approached, overtaxing the Ice Powers of the Coalition until they were rendered comatose and their weapons exploded. This revealed that Blue Snowman was actually a woman.◊ The blast of ice left Firestar and Marvel Boy completely trapped in blocks of ice. While Egghead fiddled with one of his pens, Mastermind turned his attention on Starfire and Captain Britain.

"Show me your fear..."

A Change of Scenery

We now turn to Namor and She-Hulk, locked in battle with a most unusual foursome.◊ While Namor battled Electro the Russian Assassin and Cold Warrior, She-Hulk was locked in battle with Skull Face and The Great Video, master of the deadly eye-beams!

"End woot surt af neme ees Namor, eh, Comrade" Electro asked in a thick, barely-decipherable Russian accent as he trapped Namor in a bear hug, zapping him with electricity as Cold warrior dug his freezing fingers into Namor's exposed gills.

"It... is... ancient Atlantean!" Namor growled as he struggled to escape their grips.

"Oh yeah?" Cold Warrior asked. "So what's it mean?" Channeling the power of the Electric Eel, Namor gathered the electricity into himself, shrugging off Electro's attack and using his superhuman strength to break their grasps with a swing of his powerful arms.

"It means God," Namor boasted, "Now bow."

Starfire, Fighting Egghead & Mastermind

"I hate to disappoint you, but neither Captain Britain or I know who you two are," Starfire said to Mastermind as she attempted to blast Mastermind with Starbolts. "We're... new here."

Meanwhile

Gold Beetle, carrying Suzie in his arms, was flying back towards the heroes' headquarters when he spotted Namor and She-Hulk battling four villains.

"They are outnumbered!" he told the girl. "Quick Suzie, use the Hero Dial to change so we can-"

"NO!!" she suddenly shouted, taking him by surprise.

"Suzie? What- ?"

"That thing turned me into a monster! I don't want to see it! EVER again!!" she cried.

Gold Beetle landed gently on a nearby street, then told her, "It's OK. You don't have to. Please wait for me here. I'll be back soon."

And then he flew in to join the battle, heading towards the skull-faced guy in a literal flying tackle.

"Today's just been fulla surprises," Wolverine answered, and then used the opening to roundhouse kick aimed at the Swordsman's while rubbing sand out of his eye with his wrist and then following up with an elbow to the solar plexus. "By the way, ya know anything about a buncha other villain groups attacking at the same time?" the mutant asked.

She-Hulk and Namor

She-Hulk yanked the Great Video's mask down over his eyes, before picking him up and throwing him at Skull Face.

"So you're Skull Face and the Great Video, but they're Cold Warrior and Electro? Someone got the short end of the name stick."

Back into the fray

Katana allows coat of arm's sword to pass, pulling her blade back and stepping back herself to avoid her palm, rapidly swinging her sword to rend through those arms, judging them to be artificial due to her movements, hoping Luckless would cut true.

In the Past

Battling The Strange Ones

Skull Face barely had a chance to recover from being bowled over by The Great Video when The Golden Beetle came flying towards him and knocked him into a pile of bones. The pile reformed with a jolt of electricity and he pointed his bony hands at Golden Beetle while his cape billowed dramatically.

"FOOL!" He bellowed as lightning arced from his hands, "Taste my demonic lightning!" Cold Warrior joined him in his attack, blasting Gold Beetle with ice while Namor wrestled Electro the Russian Assassin.

The Great Video, meanwhile, was struggling with his mask. As an older gentleman who had come into his powers late in life, he did not realize that he needed the mask to control the deathly radioactive beams that shot from his eyes.

The Cold Shoulder

"Hmmm, yes," Egghead muttered as he stroked his chin, "I surmised from your manner of dress, your fighting style, and your Xenographical origins that you are not of this time period. Or even, this world."

"As for who we are," Mastermind went on as he used his telepathic powers to try and probe the girls' minds to find their fears, "I am called Mastermind and he is known as Egghead. We are of the Cabal. We have returned, and the world shall belong to us once again."

Get to the Point

"Gah!" Coat-Of-Arms cried out as Luckless cut through her extra arms, more out of frustration than pain. Wildcat quickly disarmed her with a punch to the back of the head, rendering her unconscious.

"Huh," he muttered as he looked down at her, "Never realized how much easier it was to deal with these guys when there were two of me." That just left Wolverine and The Swordsman. The Indigo Warrior pivoted to avoid the blow to the chest and drove his knee into Logan's stomach before he raised his sword high overhead in both hands.

"As a matter of fact," he told Logan, "I do know. My employer's orchestrated this whole little shindig. And he just so happens to be-"

White Tiger punched him in the throat and he collapsed to the ground.

"Goddamn it, Ava!" Wildcat groaned, slapping a palm against his forehead.

"Sorry!" White Tiger quickly apologized. "I saw an opening and I just kinda went for it..."

"You need to learn to get better control of your insti-" Wildcat's advice is cut off by a sudden clapping and his nose twitches. His whole body goes rigid and Wolverine instantly recognizes something. For the first time, he is seeing an outside perspective of the moments before he slips into a berserker rage. He catches scents, too. Of rusted steel and salt water. The harbor. But something else. Something... familiar.

A figure walks in through the front door of the museum, the bright light of day casting a shadow that obscures all but the horned shape of his hair and the long tail of his cloak.

"Well done," a voice calls, a voice that Logan has never remembered hearing before and yet now brings a rapid stream of memories. Snatches of battle, of friendship, of love and pain and suffering, rage and betrayal. More than Victor Creed, more than Wade Wilson, more than whoever it is that made you what you have become, deep in your heart you, Logan, hate. This. Man. "Well done indeed... Detective."

He walks out of the light... and The Demon's Head Smiles.

Gold Beetle found out the hard way that wearing metal armor wasn't much protection from intense cold or electricity, especially in combination.

AAARRGH! he screamed. The force of the attack knocked him off the air; he landed on the iced street, where he skidded until he collided with a lamppost.

"ROBBIE!" Suzie screamed from the alley, where she was watching the fight unfold. But her friend just laid there. Could he be- dead??

NO! He couldn't be!! She had the urge to run over and check, but knew there was little she could do. Especially with those villains hanging around!

Then she noticed something: Robbie had left a thing by her side.

The Hero Dial!

Her face twisted in agony; half of her wanted to change and help him, but the other half was terrified of being turned into a monster permanently.

Then she saw someone appear, some obviously evil man, probably the villains' leader. He looked formidable! Would the heroes be able to win now?

Finally, with a silent prayer, she grabbed the Dial, and dialed the letters: H-E-R-O.

There was a burst of light and-

Darkness?

At first she was scared. But then, a White Light also appeared!

The Darkness and the Light began spiraling together, as if... dancing?

Or flowing into each other.

Wait a minute... she recognized the pattern. It was a Ying-Yang symbol!

It represented how everything has both Positive and Negative sides. Its natural; Light isn't Good and Dark isn't evil. They are both elements to be used.

Then she realized, she wasn't scared anymore. She was... calm. As if she had found balance- inner peace.

She opened her eyes. She noticed she was wearing a black-and-white "ninja" suit- skin-tight and loaded with hidden weapons. And the Powers of Light and Darkness were still with her.

She was now... Penumbra!

Time to act, she decided. By "shifting" the Light in favor of the Dark, she transformed into a living shadow! She then slid along the street, unnoticed, as she headed over to where Robbie laid.

In The Present

Far above Earth, in space, where stars twinkled and shone, a light sparked brighter than the others.....and a metal ship came hurtling out of it, coming slowly to a stop as it neared Earth. It hung in space. A single pod ejected from it, and began hurtling toward Earth. It crashed landed just outside Jump City. The pod was brown, and seemed to have been grown from nature itself. A green glow emanated from it. The pod opened, and a small life form exited it. It blinked, and looked around at the surrounding forest. Then it saw the city, and smiled.

"I am Groot!" he declared, before stomping off happily.

Supergirl—Present Atomic Skull.

After Static's notice Kara aimed her heat vision at the atomic skulls head, aiming from a distance.

"Last chance to surrender Skull! There's no way you can beat all the four of us!" She shouted.

Just as she was immigrants she tried to cover Miss Marvel with her body in case there was any blast.

Strange Ones, the Past

She-Hulk grabbed Skull Face by his cape and punched his skull off, before grabbing Cold Warrior by his collar and lifting him off the ground.

Wolverine recoiled from the hit to the stomach and was about let the guy talk before delivering -

White Tiger knocked him out with a palm to the throat.

*shnikt*

"And I'm guessing somebody just knocked that guy out just about as he's about to reveal the ringleader," Logan said, finally taking the time rub the last of the sand from his eyes. He then noticed Wildcat straighten up. He recognized the posture, from how people described to him. He was about to ask....

But......but the smell.....that overwhelming, familiar smell......triggering memories long buried, whether by the passage of time or on purpose......

The harbor......salt water........

Embalming fluid that was cooked from what could be called the cesspools of Hell itself.......

*SHNIKT*

The whites of Wolverine's eyes suddenly turned RED, his teeth were bared, he gave maintaining the fabric of time and reality the middle finger, if Wildcat did not go for the Demon's Head first Wolverine would automatically go for the villain first.

Starfire, Battle of Fears

"You already know that?!" Starfire seemed quite surprised at that twist as she began to try to free her two newest friends currently stuck in a block of ice. As Mastermind probed Starfire's mind, he would find it quite alien by human standards, but there was a fear in her mind that could be exploited... It was the alien race that had Starfire had to escape to Future Earth... the Gordanians. She never wanted to ever be captured by them which was why she had fled to Future Earth in the first place. She feared that the Gordanians would conquer her and her people, the Tamaraneans in the war between the two species of the Vega Star System.

In the Past: Fear Battle

"Young lady," Egghead explained, "I am one of the greatest minds on planet Earth."

"And I," Mastermind added, "Am the most powerful telepath alive! There is nothing you could hide from us!" At that moment, before Starfire's very eyes, Captain Britain Currently played by Sijo in case he forgot, would appear to transform into a Gordanian, directly from her nightmares, and moved to attack her!

In the Past: Get to the Point!

The two ages of James Howlett charged Ra's Al Ghul in a berserker rage while he stood stock still and awaited their advance. He took one step back and a wall of energy suddenly barreled at them, pinning Wolverine and Wildcat to the wall and assailing their senses of sight, hearing, and smell.

"Arrogant fools," A voice growled from the shadows as Ra's gave an appreciative bow. "So lost in your blind hatred, you would forget ''Diedric Von Doom!'" a man stepped from the shadows, clad all in green and steel, his face obscured under his hood. "Mankind's most malevolent magician!

In the Past: The Strange Ones

While Skull Face attempted to pull himself together, She-Hulk discovered that Cold Warrior's body emitted a temperature so frigid that even her durable jade hide felt the effects of frostbite almost immediately.

All of this was made immediately irrelevant as X-Ray ripped off his goggles and everything in his line of sight for 180 degrees was bathed in a nonstop blast of destructive and deadly radiation. Namor took to the sky to avoid getting caught.

"Down, fools!" he cried out.

In the Present: Atomic Skull!

"Get down!" Static called as he flung downward with all his might. A veritable tidal wave of lead scrap metal came rocketing down toward them, aimed at the flaming green target that was the Atomic Skull's head.

Nothing calms one's murderous rage like something else bigger distracting them. In this case, it would be Wolverine and Wildcat getting slammed into a wall by a wall of pure magic and getting his nerves and sense assaulted.

"Always figured von Doom was a genuine supervillain," Logan struggled to say.

West Coast, 21st Century

Before the fighting with Atomic Skull could get any worse, there was an almighty clap of thunder, as if the sky had opened up, and the clouds were ripped apart. Atomic Skull and Static looked up and gawked simultaneously.

"Hi there," a voice called from above. "You look like you could use a hand."

West Coast, 1965

While Starfire battled the illusion of fear that Captain Britain had become, Mastermind and Egghead grabbed Firestar and Marvel Boy's frozen forms. Egghead produced something from his pocket that looked like a pen and clicked it, producing a large, pyramid-shaped portal that swallowed all four of them up, leaving the Coalition of the Cold comatose.

Simultaneously down at the docks, a blue-garbed sorcerer wearing a golden mask◊ manipulated Doc Spectrum's emotions to turn him into a vomitous rage monster◊ to defeat the three speedsters before whisking away Quicksilver and Spectrum in a magical haze.

With She-Hulk and the Hero Duo pinned down by X-Ray's death ray, a sinister bearded man fired a compound salt cloud and net bomb charge out of a rocket launcher at Namor's back, ensnaring him and choking him. The villain grabbed his prize and, like those before him, teleported away.

At the museum, White Tiger lunged wildly at Ra's and Doom and she, too, was subdued, this time by a blow to the throat from The Demon's Head.

"Doom is beyond your petty understandings of good and evil," Doom explained to Wolverine, "You future degenerate! The Cabal knows that mankind's only salvation comes at our iron will!" Then Doom, Ra's, Wildcat and White Tiger were gone.

Starfire, In the Midst Of Battle With Fear

As Starfire and Captain Britain fought confused by Egghead's and Mastermind's illusions, those two abducted Firestar and Marvel Boy away from them. Starfire finally contacted the others.

"Darn it, both us and the Coalition of Cold were interrupted by Mastermind and Egghead!" Starfire explained, unhappy with what happened. "The Coalition of Cold have been knocked out, and Firestar and Marvel Boy have been abducted by Egghead and Mastermind..."

"They know we are from the future," Starfire sighed in defeat.
