The Harbinger of Strange
Edit: Dammit! Too late :<

In the police department HQ in Anytown, America, there's a certain manila folder in a certain drawer in a certain file cabinet. Said folder is "the case". Everyone knows about "the case", but no one seems to be able to explain what it is—what the crime was, who was involved, and whether anyone was charged or the case resolved. The new rookie detective, when he begins to ask questions about "the case", is promptly summoned to the chief's office and sternly told to cut it out. But the detective must satisfy his curiosity... The thought that the department is neglecting a case, and possibly allowing a violent criminal to go free, is too much for this wide-eyed idealistic rookie. He finds out that the chief has the keys to the drawer with "the case" and steals it late at night after everyone has gone home. The folder is old, with an odd occult-looking seal binding it. The detective sits down to examine the folder, removes the seal... And discovers that it's full of pictures of corpses on operating tables. The detective learns, from notes in the folder and annotations in the margins of the photos, that each photo is of a serial killer who was caught and killed, whether by police suicide or execution—but why the department keeps this old folder with pictures of their dead bodies around is a mystery. The detective takes the folder home with him to do some research, figuring no one will notice the absence of the forbidden folder.

The very next day, there's a murder. One of the secretaries at HQ has been killed—in the style of a well-known serial killer. But said serial killer has been dead for twenty years...

It turns out that the town exists in a kind of spiritual vortex where souls cannot progress to the afterlife, whether benign or evil. The benign ones, for the most part, don't bother anyone—but to contain the evil souls, specifically the ones of ritualistic serial killers, the police department must solicit the help of a "psychic photographer" to trap the killers' souls in photographs immediately after their deaths. Their souls remain trapped in the photos as long as the seal on the folder remains unbroken.

A fantasy story about a small group of girls who begin to question and turn their backs on the teachings of the isolated monastery-like community in which they live. The story follows them through their first questionings, their doubts and finally their founding of their own secret heresy, which they name the "Snow Dissent": a snow is cold, so should their minds be unclouded by passion, as snow is pure, so should they strive to prevent bias from contaminating their thoughts. Fearing the harsh punishment of their once-peers, they make plans to leave, and, though they come perilously close to discovery, at the last they slip out in the dead of night, setting forth to found a place of their own, there to teach what they have learned.

With practise, though, and heartwarming amounts of dedication, they are able to decorate their home. They also sometimes forget what the current trends of Christmas celebration are, due to having been dead for so long, and are confused by the appearance of a "fat man clad in red and his entourage of reindeer".
