This was just added to RWBY:

  • The Scrappy: Just by the preview of the third episode of Volume 3, Winter Schnee has entered this area due to her Holier Than Thou attitude and calling Ruby "underwhelming".

The character hasn't even shown up yet and this seems like a knee-jerk reaction. I think it should be cut until we actually have some characterization.

Not because being a knee-jerk reaction makes it wrong, but because those tend to be held by early and vocal fans, rather than any overall representation of what the fandom thinks. As far as I know, the majority of the fandom hasn't made up its mind to that degree yet.

It's also about Hate Sink qualities.

From what I've seen around different forums, Winter's reception in her first episode has been mostly positively received by the fandom. There are some who dislike her, but I wouldn't even call her a Base Breaker right now. She's definitely not The Scrappy. Not currently, anyway. It's a bit early yet, after only one episode anyway.

Probably not representative over all the fandom, but beaconship.me has her ranked as the eighth most popular character. If she's a scrappy, I've found no indications of it.

I've got two suggestions: Piper Shaw and Emma Duval from the Scream TV series. The former I'd wager is the more hated of the two, although given that we're engaged in cleanup, I'd like to throw both of them out here first. For reference, here's how they're both listed under the entry for this trope on the show's YMMV page:

  • Piper Shaw ranged between this and They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character amongst fans, simply because there seemed to be no reason for her to be around at all. She had little in common with film series counterpart Gale Weathers while also having very few distinguishing traits of her own, seeming to exist merely to remind us that Gale also existed and to add yet another suspect to the "who is the killer or killers" pool. Amelia Rose Blaire's dismal performance did the character absolutely no favors. What really solidified her scrappy status, however, was the season one finale. Besides being an incredibly predictable killer, Piper was also essentially a gender-flipped copy-and-paste of Scream 3's Roman, better known as the most hated character and killer in the entire film franchise.
  • While Emma started out as a Base Breaker, she progressively became more and more hated as the series went on due to her stupid decisions and getting two of the most well-liked characters killed.

I was looking at TheScrappy.Video Games, and I noticed that for the Team Fortress 2 entries, almost every class is listed (with the exception of the Medic). And for a lot of them, they mostly talk about people who play the classes, rather than the characters themselves. In order:

  • The first entry talks about mic-spam songs, which aren't characters.
  • The second entry talks about how Snipers are either poorly played, too numerous, or too OP.
  • The third entry is about how Spies are either useless for your team or rage-inducing when on the enemy's team.
  • The fourth entry mentions how one sever hated Engineers for being "glorified NPCs"
  • The fifth entry talks about how Soldiers have too many weapons and items, and are too easy to use.
  • The sixth entry says the Scout is annoying, but loved by the female fanbase.
  • The last entry is just a mish-mash. Pyros are Scrub characters, Demomen are OP, Heavies require no skill.

@ examples complaining about OPness/uselessness: move to Tier Induced Scrappy. @ everything else: kill with extreme prejudice.

Anytime there is a huge list of Scrappies for almost every major character, it's a huge red flag.

Speaking of what I just said, what about the Star Ocean: The Last Hope example list on TheScrappy.Video Games? I brought it up earlier in this thread, but the discussion didn't really go anywhere. Anyway, to reiterate: Any entry that claims that a work "has an entire cast of Scrappies" is doing it wrong. Compare it to the YMMV page for said game, which only mentions three characters.

EDIT: Removed examples that weren't on the YMMV page.

Deleted the Team Fortress 2 entries. Most of them were already listed under Tier Induced Scrappy, but in more detail. I don't really think there are any Scrappies in TF2 to be honest. Most of the characters seem to have decent-sized fanbases and there aren't too many who are outright hated.

Yeah, those TF 2 entires are better off nuked. The entire fanbase is broken.

I'm not even sure they fit under Tier Induced Scrappy, simply because almost all of them are listed one way or another. Almost all classes can't be hated by almost everyone in a relatively popular game. Players hate classes played by good players on the other team, and classes played by bad players on their own team. It's not a matter of class. It's a matter of Red or Blu.

[up][up][up][up]Those look legit. Not familiar, so I can't judge any of them myself, though.

[up][up]Just remove everyone not on the YMMV page.

Is that second paragraph for Scrappy Doo in Scrappy.Western Animation necessary? It reads like a Justifying Edit.

Now, my knowledge of Star Trek comes from SF Debris' reviews so I may be completely wrong here but, wasn't Seven of Nine the most popular character of her series? (or at the very least a Base Breaker?). It really doesn't help that she's also listed in EnsembleDarkHorse.Live Action TV.

[up]She's certainly not The Scrappy, at least.

[up][up]The thing with Scrappy-Doo is that he's a bit of an odd case, if he's even an example at all, and is mainly hated by the Periphery Demographic, which is the older viewers in this case, who're also by far the most vocal ones. The younger viewers, who're the intended demographics, like him. He also pretty much saved the series from cancelletion. He's more known for being hated than actually being hated.

If it's from a Periphery Demographic that's not the majority, he should be deleted and we need the trope put on the This Index Is Not an Example page.

Reporting that somebody added the trope to RWBY stating the show itself was an example for anime fans. It has since been deleted by somebody other than myself for shoehorning.

One, it's a character trope, not a work trope, and two, the trope doesn't apply to specific sections of the fanbase. Just to throw that out there.

I'd like to suggest Elle from Tales Of Xillia 2, in the Tales series.

Overall comes across as a believeable kid character, in that she is annoying at times and in large doses. But her Scrappy status comes from the fact that her Bratty Half-Pint tendencies shoot up around everyone who isn't Ludger or Alternate Milla. Elle's almost petty hostility towards Prime Milla is not endearing and makes her come across as disrespectful and uncaring towards the rest of the party's feelings about Prime Milla. The fact that deciding for Ludger to sacrifice himself, just so that Elle can live is considered a Golden Ending makes her less likeable.

Cracked 's The Scrappy entry consists entirely of complaining about actual, real-life contributors and columnists, not fictional characters. I was under the impression real-life people were not supposed to be listed under Scrappy. Should that entry be deleted?

Regarding the Cracked page, it looks like it was added by Raining Metal on Oct 5, 2014 after being deleted earlier on Aug 24, and from that addition it grew into an ugly mess made slightly less ugly with some proper wiki formatting (ignoring the NRLEP issue a moment).

From a quick skim of the site search results on both "Raining Metal" and "RainingMetal", it doesn't seem like he's been in trouble for anything on the wiki, so I suspect that it's just that he didn't think to look to see if The Scrappy was posted previously, or he didn't check the edit history for a reason for removal. That Oct 5 addition was his first appearance in the extended edit history for the page.

In any case, nuking the entry again, and if it doesn't stick then we'll see who needs to be the subject of a demonstration of Ti Kwon Leep. tongue

I added a commented out note not to readd the example, so editors who don't make a habit of reading edit histories knows not to do so. I must admit that the NRLEP line gets rather blurry in blogs and websites like this.
