My understanding was that Montreal's woes this year was chiefly injury-based and that next year they should be back in the playoffs.
Yeah, it's mostly the injuries that kept the Habs out of the playoffs, but the issue is that they're not really getting much better than they should be: I see a bunch more kinda-unremarkable second-round exits in their future.
"I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work." -Thomas EdisonCan I commiserate with you on that? The Penguins were a freakin' buzzsaw this year but even going forward I don't see a lot of good chances left for the Rangers.
I don't know about the Rangers but the Habs have Price, Subban, and a bunch of other surprisingly good players. They shouldn't have been as terrible as they were but they should have at least as much recent playoff success as the Rangers have had. My opinion is that they're held back by mediocre coaching.
Like seriously, why did it take them this long to figure out that Alex Galcheyuk is a better 1C than David Desharnais. See what happens when you do put him with Pacioretty? They both get 30 goals!

I really want them to be the Las Angeles Favorites.
"The Las Vegas Favorites are the underdogs going into this series."
"Never let the truth get in the way of a good story." TwitterBut what if they are the favorites?
The ESPN article noted that the company making the expansion bid is named Black Knight Sports and Entertainment (Bill Foley is a West Point graduate). I'm thinking the Las Vegas Knights might have the inside track here.
An update to : "Knights" and "Black Knights" have each been vetoed— the former due to trademark issues with London, Ontario (their OHL team is the London Knights), the latter by the US Army (who uses the name for all of their college sports teams). So far, they've secured domain rights to the following potential names:
- Nighthawks
- Red Hawks
- Desert Hawks
- Desert Knights
- Golden Knights
- Silver Knights
- Sand Knights
Hockey is back with Austin Matthews setting a new NHL record with 4 goals in a debut for the Leafs. (Senators still won in OT 5-4.)

"I've come to the conclusion that this is a very stupid idea."To play alongside such teams as the Angeles Kings, Jersey Devils, and Jose Sharks.
Well, at least until the Patent Office denied a trademark for the name. The team is appealing.
Personally, I think "Silver Knights" might be better for Vegas anyway - Nevada is the Silver State, and you get to keep the knight/night pun.
EDIT 2/13: Just had a thought - who is going to be Vegas' AHL affiliate?

PIT-CLB
CHI-NSH
MIN-STL

Anything can happen in the playoffs, but consensus opinion is that this is the Caps' to lose and I don't really see any pressing reason to disagree.

Caps always seem to choke in the playoffs.
My money's on the Preds to go all the way.
GIVE ME YOUR FACEOK, that's, what, the fourth late-3rd lead the Rangers have coughed up and went on to lose in these playoffs? Just...ugh.
Here is a video to celebrate the Preds vs. Pens in the Stanley Cup Finals
So, the Expansion Draft is tomorrow. I'm looking forward to seeing what kind of team the Golden Knights will end up being.

The Living Guildpact rules that coffee is an acceptable substitution for rest as specified in subsection … whatever. So we've had a few months to gauge where the teams are currently at right now.
After over a decade of rooting for Motor City I am now pulling out and supporting the new kid on the block.
Go Vegas!
GIVE ME YOUR FACESeriously, what is going on in Vegas? Crazy.
Seriously. 27-9-2 is absolutely insane for an expansion team.
The Rangers have traded with the Devils. Grabner for Yegor Rykov and a second round pick.
I swear I just saw pigs fly by the window. This is the first trade ever between the two franchises since the Devils moved in from Colorado in 1982.

The end of an era in Vancouver: after 17 seasons, the Sedin brothers are retiring.

IDK, I'm just bandwagon here due to being a new Bay Area person
My hockey heart will always be in Montreal, but this year was a catastrophe and expect to see more water-treading next year
